I mean , have the academy anything against Jim Carrey? The man did bigger than life performances in the Truman show, man of the moon or eternal sunshine of the spotless mind and he was ignored every time. He won golden globes and other prizes and he didnt get even a only nomination. Is he cursed by the academy or something???

Comedy actor not taken seriously.

See under Cary Grant, Charles Chaplin, Bill Murray, Jerry Lewis (who was great in The Nutty Professor), Eddie Murphy, John Belushi, many, many others for their comedy roles.

He also suffered from The Truman Show somehow not connecting the way it should have with the Academy - it seemed like a sure best picture nominee, but somehow missed.

Charles Chaplin was nominated for best actor for "The Great Dictator" which was a comedy even if it was serious subject matter.

There were nominations for some of the people I mentioned; I meant more for their comedy work.

Actually, Chaplin's last real comedy was The Circus, which was removed from consideration from all categories so that he could receive one all-encompassing award (which made The Circus along with Sunrise and Wings one of the three films honored the first year before the best picture category got settled).

Chaplin's great acting in City Lights, Modern Times and Monsieur Verdoux all went unnominated. City Lights in particular might stand out of the most ridiculous Academy oversight in history.

if i dictated the Oscars, Jim Carrey would have 2 nominations by now. and he would've won 1 of them.

i most def would've given him a nom for "The Truman Show".

and his performance in "Eternal Sunshine" was very Oscar-worthy IMO. he was my personal choice for Best Actor during that year. and i hate that he barely got any awards attention for his brilliant turn in this fantastic film.

I consider all those movies you listed above plus "The Great Dictator" to be comedies. Why do you classify them otherwise? I agree "The Circus" is his funniest movie with the best gags, it is also my favorite Chaplin film, but that does not mean the others are not comedies.

It's fine to call them comedies, although for the most part bittersweet ones. But I accept your description. Chaplin himself - for the most part successfully - became a lot more "messagy" after City Lights, and did much of his greatest work, but he lost touch with his audience, which unfortunately by the time of the great Monsieur Verdoux rejected him.

City Lights towers though as much if not more for its dramatic and tragic moments.

Jim Carrey is a great comedian (hell, I even enjoyed "Lemony Snicket," and who else will admit that?) but he is no Charlie Chaplin. Nevertheless, Carrey towers above every other comedian working today including the frat pack boys like the unbearable Seth Rogen, and even above the painful antics of the unamusing Ben Stiller.

i don't know over who jim carrey could've gotten the nomination, it was a very crowded category. i probably would've nominated him over jamie foxx, but it's debatable. winslet completely stole the movie from him and ultimately (and deservedly) got all the acolades

True, but I guess I would have taken out Johnny Depp, and put Jim Carrey in instead that year.

Although, I was fine with him not getting in for The Truman Show or Man on the Moon. He was fine in The Truman Show, where the best thing for me about the performance was that he showed he could restrain himself if needed. I wouldn't have nominated him though since I was fine with all of the other nominees even Roberto Benigni even if I wasn't happy with him winning. The next year I was also fine with all the nominees, but not the ultimate winner again. I remember some Oscar fans that I knew were unhappy because they thought that Sean Penn took Jim Carrey's spot that year, but I was happy with Penn being remembered.

He should have been nominated and won for the Truman Show.

Any other actor who played that role would have made the final five. It was clearly a case of the acting branch not wanting to nominate him, the same goes for Man on the Moon.

He should at the very least have 2 nominations and maybe a 3rd for ESOPM, but Winslet did steal that movie, but in part is was because he was so good.

He is due for some recognition.

Yes, totally agree with Sean and others. The comedy actors are clearly ignored by the academy, as the comedy movies. People like Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Laurel and Hardy, Marx brothers, Lewis, Sellers, etc have been always ignored, except in some honorary awards. And never a comedy did win a best picture oscar, i can only think about bittersweet films like the apartment, but not pure comedies. Same with Carrey. Its reallly a shame.

And agree about Chaplin, his masterful work in movies like city lights, modern times or the great dictator were ignored.

Also,i think that Carrey was as good as Kate Winslet in eternal sunshine. He should be nominated over the overated Jaimie Foxx in ray or the same Clint Eastwood in million dolar baby.

Carrey should have been nominated for Eternal, but not over Clint Eastwood, I would have rather seen Carrey in over Foxx.

"Annie Hall" is another bittersweet comedy to win best picture.

"It Happened One Night" is also a comedy to take top prize.

Agreed. Eastwood and Foxx should've been out (and Foxx won!!) and they should've replaced by Carrey and Paul Giamatti.

Jim Carrey did deserve nominations for The Truman Show and for Man on the Moon but I don't know if I'd give him the wins for those respective years....Kevin Spacey was great in American Beauty but if Jim Carrey had been nominated for MotM that year, I wouldn't have objected a win by him.

Actually if i were going to nominated Jim for anything it wouldn't be for his dramatic work it would have been for "Liar, Liar" which imho is his best comedic work to date, but i can see why it's not an Academy type of movie.

Congrats to Kathy Griffin on her second consecutive emmy win!

I've only nominated him once, for Eternal Sunshine. I agree with the person above who pointed out what a shame it was he received so little attention that year; but I completely disagree that Winslet stole the movie- I thought they complimented each other extremely well and made each other better. The heart and soul of that film lies in the chemistry between the two stars.
