Wow. $26 million opening day for SATC. Obviously, this movie is gonna have a lot of upfront business and not strong legs, but it's still gonna make $60-70 million this weekend. Wow.
And "The Strangers" is gonna deliver a $20 million opening. It made as much on Friday as some were predicting it would make all weekend.

Box Office Mojo is estimating a Friday take of $26.1 million.
I knew it was being underestimated from the get-go. Nearly all of the 2 or 3 dozen showings in Boston were sold out last night. I estimate a slight decline on Saturday to $24 million and another slight decline on Sunday to about $21 million, for a total of about $71 million over the weekend, surely breaking records for both the genre and a female-driven pic. It might even go higher.

SatC earned 55.7 million this weekend, enough for first. Indy 4 came in second with 46 million and The Strangers came in third with 20.7 million. Iron Man and Narina made around 13 million. Overall very strong weekend, the top 3 performed very well, SatC and The Strangers doing particularly strong.
"Sex and the City," the long-awaited romantic comedy based on the HBO series of the same name, opened in the top spot at the box office in North America with better-than-expected weekend sales of $55.7 million, distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said on Sunday

You're right. I wish movies like "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" or "The Forgotten" or "Hannibal" had made some money.
Um....
It's opening weekend, 'The Forgotten' opened at number 1, with a haul of $21 million, and ended with a total gross of $66 million -- not bad for a female driven horror flick that wasn't a sequel, and for a film that had an estimated $42 million budget.
'The Lost World' had an opening weekend of $90 million, and grossed a total of $229 million, on an estimated $73 million budget.
'Hannibal' opened to the tune of $58 million and grossed at total of $165 million, on an estimated $87 million budget.
So, I would say that Julianne Moore has been QUITE successful in being in movies that "made some money."

Don't get me wrong...this $55 million opening for SATC is absolutely amazing (how fast are we gonna see big screen versions of "The Sopranos", "24", "Alias", "Buffy", etc. now?), but considering it made half of its weekend gross on friday, this thing is gonna drop FAST.

I agree. I am very happy that the film made what it did, it shows how popular the series was. I see it having a great shelf life on video as well. As for the other shows, if there is a Sopranos movie I will be very upset and will have lost all respect for David Chase, who ended the series perfectly. Thankfully, no conformations on that yet.

Who cares?
The film was made for $60 million. Almost everything from here on out will be profit.

It already is; $26.9m on Friday, then $17.7m Saturday, a 35% dip. $10.9m projected for today; that's a 60% decline from Friday alone. It'll go past 100 million, but is going to fizzle almost as much as Speed Racer did.
Fare thee well, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, from the top 10. Kristen Bell's most successful motion picture - but not her last. $60.5 million domestically, and will break $85 million worldwide by the end of the coming week. Not bad for a $30 million romcom.

It outgrossed the movie that opened higher in the opening weekend (Forbidden Kingdom.) Uni's two comedies FSM & Baby Mama have both had decent legs. FSM could do an additional $70 million in dvd rentals & sales ($40 million sales, $30m rental.)
At least according to The-Numbers.com's sales chart & Box Office Mojo's rental charts, that's what FSM could do.

I don't think "Sex and thee City" and "Speed Racer" make for an apt comparison. "Speed" was a big disappointment right from its first weekend out the gate, it wasn't even the #1 movie of its weekend, and is going to lose bundles. It is very possible that the majority of the ladies who've been salivating for the "Sex" movie went opening weekend but it will be profitable. Maybe eveb highly profitable. And as I think most of those fans of the show liked the film, the audience was pretty raucous in the show I attended, it will probably be a big seller on DVD.
