Variety reports today that next year, with the new digital TV rules coming into effect, February will not be a sweeps month - for next year at least, it will be moved to March.

Could that mean the date for the awards for 2008 films might change? Remember, despite all the reasons given for moving up the awards, the main one was that ABC wanted its highest rated program of the year to be in a sweeps month (which then helps them to charge higher ad rates for a range of programs).

I know the Academy has announced its dates - but other than the availability of the Kodak Theatre (obviously a crucial element), I can't think of any other reason that if ABC preferred they couldn't push it back a week or two.

Anyway, something to keep your eye on.

It would only be a week, so not a huge change.

That actually was done for the 2005 (held in 2006) awards since the last Sunday in February was opposite the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

i know, but what i'm saying is that maybe they could push back the oscars to the original dates in like the end of march...

I was thinking this could be a possibility. I don't think they would push it back until the end of March, but I can definitely see them having it the first weekend in March.

Sometime early next year, you will need to have a digital TV to receive over the air broadcasts (not a problem for newer TVs, but this will affect some older ones).

This is likely to a small extent cause some disruption in viewership. Because of this, the networks want to be able to have a sweeps month when the problem has mostly been solved.
