"Bronson" is being released in the US next month. From what I have read from those who have seen it, the movie itself is not great but the lead actor, Tom Hardy, reportedly gives an Oscar-worthy performance. What are your thoughts on his chances in the best actor race?
It is being released by Magnolia. Nearly all their films have limited theatrical playings (not much beyond NY/LA) and go to VOD immediately. If so, ineligible.
Otherwise, though, from what I see, virtually none anyway unless he wins at least one of the top critics' awards, and then still likely odds heavily against.

So what's the rule that would make it ineligible? I thought as long as it plays in Los Angeles county before any other type of media release it's good to go...
There needs to be some sort of window between its theatrical opening and the VOD offering anywhere in the US. Magnolia's films usually are on VOD immediately. Thus, these are ineligible.
You can't open on Friday and go on VOD the following Monday and still be eligible.
Looking at various links provided by Google - they indicate a VOD date somewhere between September 25 and early October.

I hope the film is eligible. It's an amazing film and Tom Hardy gives the best performance of the year. It's a brilliant piece of acting, I rank up there as one of the best performances I've ever seen.

It probably won't be, and this is the wave of the future unless the Academy adjusts, rather than thinking doubling the number of best picture nominees is what they should be doing to solve their problems.
Thanks for the information. I was looking on the official website for Magnolia Pictures and noticed that it lists the VOD dates for several of their other films, but does not have one listed for Bronson:
Julia is currently available as VOD from my cable system apart from Magnolia's separate offerings. I still find it difficult to believe it hasn't already had an earlier disqualifying run on VOD.
