PUSH , a film by Lee Daniels win the major awards at Sundance and finally have a distributor: LionsGate with help of O Winfrey and Tyler Perry.

Since its premiere in Sundance everybody is talking about a nomination for M´Onique and even for Mariah Carey.

Everybody said is so raw and emotional that is not so easy to watch.

All the buzz about this film was so unexpected , since all the attention of Lee Daniels was "Tennessee"...

Do you think it will impact?

With both Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry behind it now, I think Push will be a big contender at next year's Oscars. I have yet to see this film, but I have only heard good things of it. And it looks like Mo'Nique could get her first Oscar nomination, especially since she won the major prize for acting at Sundance. Maybe Mariah Carey will tag along for a nomination as well... No joke!

2010 Oscars FYC:

Lead Actor - Joseph Gordon-Levitt, (500) Days of Summer
Lead Actress - Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia
Supporting Actor - Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
Supporting Actress - Mo'Nique, Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire
Original Screenplay - Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, (500) Days of Summer

I read an excellent review in Variety on PUSH yesterday.

I'm looking forward to seeing this.

Thank you for completely editing my post. I meant "no joke" for Carey.

You're welcome, always happy to lend a hand.

But really, Mariah Carey?

I suppose if Oprah thinks she got Obama elected, making an Oscar winner out of Miss Razzie 2001 will be a piece o' cake!

From the Variety review:

Among the many delightful surprises in the film is Mariah Carey, who is pitch-perfect as a welfare counselor and serves as this demi-tragedy’s Greek chorus. It’s possible that many viewers won’t recognize her until the final credits, but like so many things about “Push,” the performance is disarming.

I'm not saying Mariah Carey is gonna get a nomination like Mo'Nique could get, but apparently she surprised many people with her acting chops in this film, and she has some buzz going for her from Sundance. I think we should see the film to make a final decision, but Carey should just be in the back of our minds for next year's Oscars.

IF the Academy had the temerity, nay, cojones, to snub:
Cate Blanchett
Clint Eastwood
Sally Hawkins
Christopher Nolan
The Dark Knight
etc.

...do you REALLY think Mariah Carey has a chance?

I clicked on this thread because I thought y'all would be talking about Chris Evans LOL. Whenever I keep hearing Push that's all I think of (not a bad thing mind you).

This movie is really intriguing though after its Sundance wins. I wonder if Mariah contributed any music to a soundtrack or anything?

I just started reading reviews for this movie online. All I'm reading about is big critical praise for Mo'Nique and Mariah Carey's performances in this film, more so for Mo'Nique where some tout her as a Oscar nominee favourite for next year. I hadn't heard about this film until I came upon this thread. Now I'm really interested in seeing this movie after reading some of these reviews.

Yes, I suspected I wouldn't be the only one aghast, crestfallen, and disconcerted to discover the film I thought I was seeing starred Mariah Carey instead of Chris Evans!!!

True, but then again, next year is not this year... Let's see where Carey stands in the next couple of months, but for now, just let her name wander around the Best Supporting Actress category for next year a bit because it most likely will.

Here is the full Variety review. The title is "Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire":
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire
by JOHN ANDERSON

Director Lee Daniels brings to life a harrowing tale of abuse in "Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire," which unspooled at Sundance.

A Lee Daniels Entertainment and Smokewood Entertainment presentation. (International sales: Elephant Eye Films, New York.) Produced by Daniels, Sarah Siegel-Magness, Gary Magness. Executive producers, Lisa Cortes, Tom Heller. Co-producer, Mark Mathis. Directed by Lee Daniels. Screenplay, Damien Paul, based on the novel by Sapphire.

Claireece "Precious" Jones - Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe
Mary - Mo'Nique
Ms. Rain - Paula Patton
Nurse John - Lenny Kravitz
Ms. Weiss - Mariah Carey
Cornrows - Sherri Shepherd

An urban nightmare with a surfeit of soul, “Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire” is like a diamond -- clear, bright, but oh so hard. To simply call it harrowing or unsparing doesn’t quite cut it; “Push” is also courageous and uncompromising, a shaken ****tail of debasement and elation, despair and hope. Everyone involved deserves credit for creating a movie so dangerous, problematic, and ultimately elevating. Marketing will be a problem because the shorthand description is so unpalatable. But this is, for all its scorched-earth emotion, a film to be loved.

Adapted by Damien Paul from the work by one-time Harlem teacher and poet Sapphire, “Push” is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones (newcomer Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe), a character who might have sprung from the collective brain of Charles Dickens, Toni Morrison, and whoever carved the heads on Easter Island. With a jutting jaw and barely visible eyes, Claireece’s face is a monument to the racial crimes of the past 400 years (that this miserable child of 16 can look in the mirror and fantasize seeing a blonde white girl is pungent shorthand for a raft of evils).

Mute and mountainous, a stolid outsider who can barely read, Claireece is pregnant -- again -- by her father and on the verge of being kicked out of school. She’s also cruelly oppressed by her mother, Mary (Mo’Nique), whose daily routine consists of watching daytime TV, smoking cigarettes, and treating her daughter like a slave (any historical parallels are not an accident). The situation is so dire that you almost have to laugh -- the way you might laugh, nervously, during the darkest moments of a horror movie.

“Push” is a horror movie, of course, and Mary is a monster, whose one glimmer of humanity -- which Mo’Nique, who is utterly brilliant, reveals in a tour de force soliloquy at the finale -- only makes her more horrible.

Second-time helmer Daniels (“Shadowboxer”) demonstrates a remarkable, balletic ability to juggle emotional extremes. Claireece has her fantasies, and their visualizations -- of the girl as satin-clad pop star, movie star, or supermodel -- work as relief valves. They’re never funny, but they do humanize a character who has been reduced, by those who are supposed to love her, to a piece of meat, and who presents herself to the world as a very different, far less attractive creature than the Claireece we hear in voiceover.

Daniels never allows the film, however gothic and nightmarish, to lose its footing in the real world, and that world includes a certain amount of hope: Despite her mother’s hostility, Claireece enrolls in an alternative school where a teacher named Blu Rain (Paula Patton) prepares young women for their GEDs. Patton is terrific, beautiful but carrying the weight of the world in her eyes. And Claireece’s classmates, with their street-smart banter, give the film some needed levity.

Production values are tops.

Mariah Carey certainly wouldn't be the first actress to win or be nominated for a Razzie to win or be nominated for an Oscar, so I don't think the fact that she won a Razzie (who takes these serious anyway????) means anything. Of course, it is easy ammo to bring up to downplay and critcizie anything she does in film now, despite the positives reviews she has received for both this film AND "Tennessee." And why would who the Academy snubbed this year have anything to do with who does or does not get nominated next year?? I thought that the fact that an "American-Idol reject" has an Oscar, or an actress whose prior claim to fame was a panned "Karate Kid" remake and a brief stint on "Beverly Hills 90210" has TWO Oscars showed us that virtually anything is possible if the performance and film are praised enough....

Not saying Mariah will even come close to being nominated, though with the reviews of the films and such, her name will certainly be floating around here until better options arise as the year goes on. What this could do, though, is open the door for her getting more serious roles in the future. Mariah seems to certainly be making some better choices, more demanding choices as of lately than some other female singers who are trying to act.

My jaw will hit the floor the day I hear the phrase Academy Award Nominee Mo'Nique. Wonders never cease. But hey, if she's great in the role and the performance is deserving, then good for her.

Lee Daniels also directed that piece of crap "Shadowboxer"!?!? Just because a couple of rave reviews for Mo'Nique and Mariah doesn't necessarily mean automatic Oscar nomination. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Besides I have a hard time buying the Academy embracing this.

Let's just put it out on the table: Just because you're a popular singer DOES NOT MEAN you have what it takes to be a successful movie actor.

I can think of quite a few examples, so let's not pee in our pants because Mariah Carey doesn't make a total fool of herself this time out.

No need to start shouting Oscar either.

It is a shame she didn't get nominated for "Phat Girlz." That upset me more than the Sally Hawkins snub this year.
