My jaw will hit the floor the day I hear the phrase Academy Award Nominee Mo'Nique. Wonders never cease. But hey, if she's great in the role and the performance is deserving, then good for her.
It is a shame she didn't get nominated for "Phat Girlz." That upset me more than the Sally Hawkins snub this year.
Its nice to know that I'm not the only one that feels the pain of that injustice.

Yes, it is truly a shame and a disgrace the members of IMDb failed to recognize the Oscar-caliber acting and instead ranked "Phat Girlz" #91 of the worst 100 films ever.
I think the great success of "Frozen River" last year has given this film awards hype that it probably won't fulfill, but it looks like a great project and at this point I'd like to see it succeed, basically because Mo'Nique's reviews have been amazing and the thought of her as a nominee really tickles me.

Who here has seen "Shadowboxer?" It's an awful, awful film. It was sad to see Helen Mirren faking orgasms with Cuba Gooding, Jr. However, Mo'Nique was REALLY good in that as the crack addicted nurse.
Anyway, can you guys imagine Mo'Nique on the red carpet next year for all the awards shows? That'd be funny.
Also, Mo'Nique won the top prize at Sundance for acting. Who else has won that prize in previous years?
I saw Shadowboxer. It was stunning how little attention that film - complete with pretty intense naked sex scene outdoors between Gooding and Mirren - got despite being released shortly before The Queen.

No kidding. And how the heck did the Emmy voters overlook her for her dazzling playmanship at the "Celebrity Family Feud" a few years back. Ugh, the injustice!

For anyone who is interested, here is a youtube link that features many (long) clips from the movie that is tied in with interviews. Mo'Nique looks really really good here, so different than before!, and Gabby Sidibe as well, but Mariah Carey and Paula Patton are also featured here as well in the clips. Depending on whether or not Mariah Carey is going to have more money shots than that scene, I think we can tell if she can get a nomination or not.

Bocaboy, your infatuation with Mariah Carey has been made clear, but she's NOT going to get nominated for this.

I have the same enthusiasm for Push as I have for rushing to see The Lovely Bones.

I am not a fanboy of Mariah Carey, nor am I obsessed with her. I just think it will be interesting to see someone like her get nominated. I really don't care for Mariah Carey, but it's always interesting to see something like this.

Sherri Shepard is in this film and I watched The View and Whoopi announced it about this film and they played a clip of Sherri Shepard's scene and she did a REALLY dramatic and moving part in it. She plays "Cornrows". A surprising change from her comedy and comedic type of roles she takes in film and television. She definitely has range and a nice flair for the dramatics. I will be seeing this film for sure.
Push won MOST of the awards at Sundance this year. Jury Award, among others. It is THAT good!

Harvey and Lionsgate, Pushing Each Other by Steven Zeitchik
We knew The Weinstein Company wanted "Push," that big Sundance winner with big awards hopes. Now we know how much they want it.
The New York banner filed suit in New York today, either just after or just before Lionsgate, which earlier in the week announced it had bought the movie, did the same in Los Angeles.
The real issue: did negotiations with TWC for the Lee Daniels (and Oprah-endorsed) pic progress far enough for the company to have a claim?
Lionsgate says no -- per their complaint, which seeks to have a judge declare the movie is unequivocally theirs (and which you can read here): "While the producers acknowledged they had been negotiating with Weinstein, they denied that any final, binding or enforceable deal for the rights to the film had been reached with Weinstein."
Weinstein has an, um different take.
Per Bert Fields, one of the two big guns (David Boies is the other): "TWC reached a firm agreement for the rights to “Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire.” Behind their backs Cinetic Media tried to make a better deal with Lionsgate. Lionsgate was well aware of the TWC contract but went forward anyway. We have just been informed that Lionsgate went to court today in Los Angeles to preempt TWC’s lawsuit in New York. This is obvious forum-shopping by a party that knew TWC was going to sue. We will deal with it appropriately.”
God, a catfight . . . over a Sundance movie? TWC is in a similar tussle with Bravo over "Project Runway." That, of course is a big lucrative franchise. This is about a prestige movie that has yet to be released, let alone earn big dollars.
Of course what all this points up is just how informal those Sundance negotiations are. Back of the envelope, middle of an alley, front of a bar. That's usually where a lot of these discussions take place. Was there enough of a discussion, or agreement, to give TWC a claim? A judge will decide. We just can't wait until he does -- it's not everyday the judicial system parses the finer points of a night at the Riverhorse.

No matter what your feelings are about Mo'Nique, Mariah, or the film Shadowboxer...with winning 3 Awards at the Sundance Film Festival this year (including both the Jury and Audience Award: only the third film to accomplish this) and by being picked up by Lionsgate with personal support by both Oprah and Tyler Perry, there is no denying that this film is going to be good, if not great! It's received nothing but glowing reviews from everyone, so far including Variety and The Hollywood Reporter and MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR Oscar buzz for Mo'Nique! I love Mariah, but I'm not sure if I buy the buzz on that performance quite yet. I feel like the only way she would turn out to be a nominee this year is if A) If there is a weak line-up of contenders for Supporting Actress and B) If the film is so loved by the Academy that she rides the love train to get a nom...both of which COULD happen. You never know.
Just randomly, I thought I would post this quote from Oprah about the film:
"I've never seen anything like it. The moment I saw PUSH: BASED ON THE NOVEL BY SAPPHIRE, I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to encourage other people to see this movie. The film is so raw and powerful - it split me open."
Also, can we please change the title of this thread to PUSH: Based on the Novel by Sapphire to avoid confusion. Thanks!
