The awards keep coming for “The Hurt Locker” director Kathryn Bigelow, who is already set to be feted at the Gotham Independent Film Awards. As her film’s star Jeremy Renner takes down the Breakthrough Actor award at the upcoming Hollywood Film Festival, Bigelow herself will receive the Hollywood Director Award, fest director Carlos de Abreu announced today.

Elsewhere, Nora Ephron, whose “Julie & Julia” screenplay really did wonders with a troublesome book, will be honored with the Hollywood Screenwriter Award, while “Up” will received the Hollywood Animation Award.

The Hollywood Visual Effects Award will go to Scott Farrar, visual effects supervisor for “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”

The awards are set to take place on October 26 in Beverly Hills, but the most significant tip of the hat here is obviously Bigelow. Is there any real doubt that the Academy would be really stretching to go against the grain if they didn’t acknowledge her work on “The Hurt Locker?” Anything can happen, but I’d be shocked if members missed this opportunity.

Full list of announced Hollywood fest honorees after the jump.

Hollywood Director Award: Kathryn Bigelow, “The Hurt Locker”
Hollywood Screenwriter Award: Nora Ephron, “Julie & Julia”
Hollywood Breakthrough Actor Award: Jeremy Renner, “The Hurt Locker”
Hollywood Breakthrough Actress Award: Carey Mulligan, “An Education”
Hollywood Breakthrough Screenwriter Award: Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber, “(500) Days of Summer”
Hollywood Animation Award: “Up”
Hollywood Visual Effects Award: Scott Farrar, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”
New Hollywood Award: Gabourey Sidibe, “Precious”

This needs to be brought up every year.

The Hollywood Film Festival is a non-entity that exists mainly to enhance Oscar-season marketing.

These "awards" are bought by studios to give potential Oscar contenders credibility and attention.

Nobody pays attention to this out here.

Well, I didn't really see it as a precursor to the Oscars anyway. I just saw this as news in film.

Too bad she didn't film that script instead of the crummy one she filmed.

Surely, someone must be paying attention to this, otherwise there wouldn't be thread about it.

Are you gonna be this annoying when the Golden Globes come around?

The Golden Globes have importance, unfortunately, to the Oscars.

The Hollywood Film Festival doesn't, except for showing that Summit and Sony have money to waste buying these awards.

And just to react to your comment, I will comment on the GGs more this year than I was planning to, so you can blame yourself for that.

Can I just say that when Starz was showing Swayze films in tribute, I rewatched Point Break and it was a hell of a lot better than I remember. I didn't even realize that it was Kathryn Bigelow that directed it. I think I might be rooting for her now because I was impressed with The Hurt Locker, but didn't really have another movie of hers that I liked to solidify my feelings.

(Okay wait I just looked her up, she's a Sagittarius. That clinches it. I'm backin' her. I liked K19 too. You learned something new everyday. )

She's been the best American female director, and a good director period, for 25 years. Because she made more action/genre films, she confused people as to what to think.

Near Dark, Blue Steel and Strange Days are also good or better.

I was surprised by Point Break too, and liked it more than I thought I would.

If you like vampire movies, Near Dark is for me, unforgettable.

There's no place like Hollyweird.

Near Dark rocks! I remember seeing it at the theater. I didn't realize that I have seen almost all of Bigelow's films, and enjoyed them all!

You're gonna comment out of spite?

Real mature, seanflynn.

I will comment on the GGs as I choose, mainly because every year there are many new members here, some of whom get the impression from the media and here that they have legitimacy and credibility.

It won't be constant, and in reality you have no influence on my doing so, but yes, there will be comments on them.

Nothing wrong with you liking them; nothing wrong with me not.

For the record, I like the Golden Globes. And Sean, I think that little things like "legitimacy" and "credibility" really shouldn't play into your opinion of ceremonies, particularly ones who claim to honor the year's best. [insert icon of tongue-in-cheek humor smiley]
