Life Is Beautiful is closer to the worst.

If you want to include an Italian film, The Bicycle Thief is far more appropriate.

OZU Yasujiro's 1958 masterpiece Equinox Flower, about a widowed father regarded as an expert by his friend's in dealing with children, but emotionally unable to deal with his own adult daughter's issues, towers above nearly all Hollywood convention parent-child films.

Oh, yeah. The Sum of Us. That's a perfect father-son movie. On the surface it's a gay acceptance story, but it's really all about what we all have to face when we have to take care or our elderly fathers in all the most unpleasant ways imaginable.

"Frequency", 2000, with Dennis Quaid as the dad, Jim Caviezel as the son, and Elizabeth Mitchell as the mom.

imdb says "An accidental cross-time radio link connects father and son across 30 years". Enduring and redeeming love.

Adding: Dennis Hopper in True Romance. Perhaps an unconventional choice; but he was quite a dad. And, Brendan Fraser in The Mummy Returns; Clifton Webb, in Cheaper By the Dozen; just a range of choices. Oh, and Djimon Hounsou in Blood Diamond.

1-Big Fish-to truly learn who your father is and as a young kid to love him uncodtionally but as an adult you feel like he is full of hot air, but learning to truly love him for who he is and understandig him as the valued lesson. This is the best father son film.

2-Finding Nemo-what Nemo's father does for him is one of the most courageous things ever; he searches beyond his comfort zone facing danger and peril to bring Nemo back.

3-To Kill and Mockingbird-this is truly a classic and really is about admiring the man who sticks up for others even if the odds are against him.

4-Life is Beautiful-nuff said really he helps his son through dealing with the evils of war with his humour and love

5-The Birdcage-to pretend to be something you are not and get in drag and having to impress some right wing conservatives by selling something fake, but ultimately doing this out of love these two are truly some of the best fathers on screen

"La Gran Familia" It is a spanish old movie about a man who has 16 children... it is a classic

"Live with my Father" William Powell is great in that movie.

"RAN" It is a short of King Lear but you know, i saw that movie when i was a kid and i loved it.

"Decalogo" the polish movie about the ten commiments... Specially Chapter 1.

"You cant take it with you"

and of course

"It is a wonderful life"

Just in time for the day, and a clear contender for greatest father/son film of all time, OZU Yasujiro's magnificent There Was a Father is showing overnight on Turner Classic Movies (Sun 11PM PDT/Mon 2AM EDT).

Ozu increasingly is my choice as the greatest director of all time, and irrespective of the subject timeliness, any serious film fan should watch this or any of his other masterpieces (quite a few of which are available on US DVD).

What is the name of the Fred MacMurray movie, where he waltzes with his daughter, and says something along the lines of "I always wanted to dance with my daughter" (but not in a creepy way)?

I remember seeing that one as a kid, and thinking that was just the best dad.
