I think this will be the most interesting category of the year. Leading Actress race is kind of poor this year, but there are 2 films that will get all the attention in this one: Nine & Precious.
Nine has a phenomenal cast full of divas and living legends, Precious has the biggest buzz and breakthrough performances.
Mo´Nique : since Sundance her role as an abusive mother was a lock, everybody was and will be talking about her.
The "Nine" ladies can fill the other 4 slots, Marion Cotillard has 2 songs and more screentime than the others so I believe The Weinstein Company will pull her as Lead so another actress can get in, audiences in the first screenings told Judi Dench and Penelope Cruz have the best parts as supporters, Nicole Kidman role is too short but important as well as Sophia Loren´s, but the Academy would love to nominate her cause is a legend, Fergie will be a surprise, but like Kate Hudson I dont see a nomination here.
But... since the premiere of PRECIOUS in the TIFF, many people is writting about Paula Patton and Mariah Carey as dark horses, the first one is the "angel" of the movie and the second one the "detonator" of the climax , it will be a surprise what will happen.
This race is great and Susan Sarandon in The Lovely Bones, Rosamund Pike in An Education and Betty White in ThE Proposal also want a place there.

I don't care how good Mariah is, if she gets the tag of Oscar Nominee I think I would throw up!
My website and blog are taking a little break, since Geocities is closing and I now have to upload everything to a new site, so I am working on a new design and it is gonna take me a while, hoping to get it up by Oscar Season.
We have been talking about this extensively in the Predictions thread above, but this will for sure be the most crowded and exciting race this year!
I am really starting to wonder if Nine will in face be able to get 3 slots for Cotillard, Cruz, and Dench. As great as that would be, I really hope that this scenario won't happen because it will really screw up what this category will be all about this year.
Mo'Nique is pretty much in. I hesitate using this word, but I would even say that she is a "lock." Yup, I said it!
And then we have Cotillard, Cruz, and Dench. Yada yada yada...
Now comes the other contenders:
Melanie Laurant - Inglourious Basterds Jane Lynch - Julie & Julia Betty White - The Proposal Rosamund Pike - An Education Vera Farmiga - Up in the Air Anna Kendrick - Up in the Air Julianne Moore - A Single Man Sigourney Weaver - Avatar Kate Hudson - Nine Mariah Carey - Precious Susan Sarandon - The Lovely Bones Rachel Weisz - The Lovely Bones Paula Patton - Precious
This is by far the most crowded and exciting category.
What it looks to be right now:
Mo'Nique, Precious Marion Cotillard, Nine Penelope Cruz, Nine Judi Dench, Nine LAST SPOT - choose from list above.
*Seriously, now is when I wish the Academy would make the acting categories 10 nominees as well! Not really, but in a case like this where it is so crowded...
Ideally, this is how I think it should be:
Mo'Nique, Precious Melanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air Betty White, The Proposal
*Maybe throw in Jane Lynch in there somewhere! I would like to see that!
2010 Oscars FYC:

Damn! You REALLY want Betty White in this race, dontcha? Haha, nothing wrong with that! Just noticed that you always have her in your choices. Right now, I really want to see Penelope Cruz earn another Oscar nomination. I love her...

I read some reports from early screeners that Marion Cotillard is the standout of the 'Nine' ladies and that Cruz is great and oscar-worthy as well.
I can't wait to watch films this fall. I really hope see some names previous nominees like Julianne Moore and young newcomers like Anna Kendrick make it in the race.
I love Betty White too but to suggest an oscar nod for her in The Proposal is laughable. It was a stupid movie that was your typical canned Hollywood production.
I think Stinger it's not true. It was a very good comedy, with Bettys incredible performance. I think she deserve a nomination, and the Oscar love "typical canned Hollywood" nominees, do you remember: Tropic Thunder, In & Out....ec
FYC OSCAR and GOLDEN-GLOBE 2010:
Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia Julianne Moore - A Single Man
I really think Mo'Nique has an excellent chance at walking away with the Oscar. It is a performance we have been hearing about for months now, and I will be willing to bet that there will be some huge campaigning done for her. Though some may not agree with the portrayal of her character, by all accounts she nails the performance.

Mo'Nique, Precious Melanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air Betty White, The Proposal
Since you haven't seen "Precious" and "Up in the Air" (and also have not seen "Nine", "A Single Man", "An Education", etc.) how do you know this is how it should be? Are you sure you feel this way in a few months once you start seeing most of the Oscar flicks?
And yes Sigourney Weaver got nominated for a film about fighting killer aliens but I doubt she will be nominated again for a sci-fi flick. Especially one about blue cat/kangaroo people in outer space.

The film is directed by James Cameron, fercrissake! I wouldn't dismiss it or Weaver's chances so casually, especially as you haven't seen it yourself.

I do not even remember seeing Sigourney Weaver in the trailer (it was mostly made up of the silly, cartoonish aliens fighting in a forest- looked like the Ewok sequence of "Return of the Jedi" crossed with "Thundercats") I do not think her part is that major. Watch the trailer and it just does not look like an Oscar movie outside of visual effects, sound, etc.
As I can only think of three Oscar nominated performances for sci-fi films (Sigourney Weaver- "Aliens", Alec Guiness- "Star Wars" & Melinda Dillon- "Close Encounters of the Third Kind") the genre itself is also working against her.

In fairness to Cameron's film, it was not the official trailer. It was a teaser to the trailer.
Not that anyone should base a film's quality/Oscar chances on a trailer, but I think this teaser was intended to keep the fanatic internet fanbase for the film excited.

You might be right, the Academy likes those "out of nowhere" performances. She isn't known for dramatic works, so roles like this always impress. (As opposed to a Meryl Streep who you "expect to deliver a good performance)
Marion Cotillard is a recent winner, so (unfair as it may be) that might lower her chances.
With all the talk of the Oscars trying to reach a broader more mainstream audience (including adding some mainstream pics to the best pic noms). I think voters might be thinking out of the box on this and she could come away the winner.
Mo'Nique, Precious Melanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air Betty White, The Proposal

You are completely right. I haven't seen Up in the Air or Precious yet, but they are films that have been seen at festivals already and already have strong buzz following these performances. Basically, I was trying to make a point how Cotillard, Cruz, and Dench are really shaking up this race.
I may not feel this exact way in a few months when I will actually see the films, but if you look above, I gave what I think are more realistic predictions right now - which include all three Nine ladies. I actually hope that this won't be the case, but it sure looks to be right now after the early screening reviews.
And about Weaver, notice how I didn't mention her at all in my predictions, only in that list of BSA contenders... I personally do not think that she will get a nom, but if you look at many other predictions on other sites, then I think you will be just as surprised as I was to see her name mentioned so many times.
About Betty White, I thought she was actually very funny in The Proposal, but in my "actual" predictions I didn't mention her, only in my "ideal" predictions. I really hope it will actually happen, but don't write her off just yet. With her recieving the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award this year should hopefully help her chances too!
