2009 is almost over, so it is time for Entertainment Weekly to release its list of Entertainers of the Year.

This time last year, it was assumed Heath Ledger or the Dark Knight would be named Entertainer of the Year (Tina Fey was a possibility too). Instead, the editors surprised some of us and chose Robert Downey Jr for the amazing year he had with Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, which garnered him an Oscar nomination.

Unless the magazine chooses a generic theme like "Vampires" (New Moon, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, etc.), this year is harder to predict.

Who do you think will make the list and more importantly be named Entertainer of the Year?

Here are my inklings:

ps: Sorry if this does not belong in the Oscar thread!

1) Michael Jackson
2) New Moon cast
3) Lady Gaga
4) Glee
5) Monique
6) Adam Lambert
7) Meryl Streep
8) Christoph Waltz
9) Zach Galifianakis (or Hangover Cast)
10) Taylor Swift

I was actually betting on Tina Fey last year then Robert Downey before Heath Ledger.

As for this year, I don't think the crown will be for a movie star. Michael Jackson, and or Lady gaga are safe bets, and I can see either one of them having the title.

However, I have a feeling that it will be the cast of Mad Men who will be the Entertainer of the Year.

Those who will be considered I think:
- Marion Cotillard
- Penelope Cruz
- Lady Gaga
- Bryan Cranston
- the cast of Mad Men
- thecast of Glee
- Meryl Streep
- Michael Jackson
- Taylor Swift

I hope The Office wins as Best Comedy Series for this year's Emmy Awards.

I think that's it. EW has their obsessions that they promote and Mad Men is certainly one of them right now.

If Nine is a big hit, I could see "The Ladies of Nine" or something like that making the cover.

If it isn't Mad Men, though, I think it will be Michael Jackson, especially if the documentary is the big hit we are told it will be.

Here are a list of pervious winners to provide some context:

Bart Simpson (1990)
Jodie Foster (1991)
Saturday Night Live (1992)
Steven Spielberg (1993)
Tom Hanks (1994)
Friends (1995)
Rosie O'Donnell (1996)
Ellen DeGeneres (1997)
Leonardo DiCaprio (1998)
Ricky Martin (1999)
Russell Crowe (2000)
Nicole Kidman (2001)
Denzel Washington (2002)
The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)
Jon Stewart (2004)
Lost (2005)
Grey's Anatomy (2006)
J. K. Rowling (2007)
Robert Downey, Jr. (2008)

...the only time a musician won was 1999. Does not bode well for Gaga. They do like honoring television casts, so I can see Mad Men winning as well.

Not a bad group overall, except for Grey's Anatomy. Denzel's win is a bit odd too since he essentially won for getting the oscar the previous year and for directing Antwone Fisher, which was not a rousing commercial or critical success.

The ladies of Nine is a good contender as well since most of the October to January covers are dedicated to probable Oscar nominated movies, and it can be Nine's cover. I think it is safe to assume they will get their own issue right?

Michael Jackson has had a cover just this year so I think EW won't likely repeat. That's what they said cost Tina Fey the title last year.

I hope The Office wins as Best Comedy Series for this year's Emmy Awards.

The last and ONLY time if I may add. This might boost well for a Gaga or MJ win.

However, I'm sticking with Mad Men.

Well that was an odd reason to not give Tina her recognition! If I am not mistaken, Iron Man had a few EW covers last year too. LAME.

I'm gonna go off the deep end and pick Twitter. I know, I know. It's just been the most entertaining thing this year.

I could see Time or Reader's Digest to pick this one up more than EW. After all, isn't it Time who picked YouTube years ago?

Actually, I believe they picked "You" as their Person of the Year, in response to user content all over the Web, not just youtube.

I'm thinking the "Vampires" idea is actually quite plausible. I can see them doing that.

My guess however is Michael Jackson

Beyonce could be in the top 10 if they count Single Ladies as part of this year.

Beyonce...actually, I think she has a chance at it. A finalist at least. She's been working hard this year.

I don't think Mad Men will be the top entertainer this late in the game. They made the list in their first season. Black Eyed Peas and Hugh Jackman are strong contenders to make the list as well. For the top, I agree with either Vampires, MJ or Tina Fey. Glee will come close to the top but won't make it all the way.

How is Neil Patrick Harris not getting more talk here? After a decent run hosting the Tonys (which he concluded with a terrific eleven o'clock number), he went on to be one of the best Emmy hosts (or hosts of any award show) that I've seen in a good long while. Not only that, but his show "How I Met Your Mother," with its recent Comedy nomination, is obviously striking a cord with a great deal of viewers.

Michael Jackson might make it, but last time I guessed a posthumous performer (Heath Ledger) it turned out incorrect. Then again, IT'S MICHAEL FRIGGIN' JACKSON!
