The killer category this year is the Young Actors category. All the performances in that category were unbelievable, so it'll be interesting to see who wins it.

No real surprise that Balibo and Samson & Delilah are leading the nods though.

My WTF nom was Martin Henderson getting a nomination for a guest appearance on House.

I think the AFI have attempted to spread the good cheer this year.

They increased the Best Film nominees from 4 to 6 - allowing 2 more films to be nominated.

They reintroduced the General Members Best Film award - and again 6 noms instead of the usual 4.

They increased the Young Actor noms from 4 to 6 as well

And they are introducing a special award for "Highest Grossing Australian film" which will most likely go to "Australia" as a consolation prize for being snubbed in the Best Film category that is voted only by Industry this year.

Despite a great year for film - I was surprised by the following;-

"Australia" not being nominated for Cinematography. Mandy Walker was brilliant in this film.

Monica Maughan wasn't nominated for Supporting Actress in Blessed. I attended the sessions in Melbourne and many of us were raving about her excellent work in this film.

John Malkovich not being nominated for Lead Actor in Disgrace. The reviews were excellent and I thought he was a shoe in.

My predix for the main awards will be;-

Best Film (Industry voted) ;- Balibo
Best Film (Members choice) ;- Mao's Last Dancer
Best Director - Thornton
Best Actor - La Paglia
Best Actress - O'Connor
Best Supporting Actor - Brown
Best Supporting Actress - Dermody
Young Actor - TIE= McNamara and Gibson
Highest Grossing Film - Australia

bettestreep I've pretty much got all the same as you. The only one that could switch is Best Film if Balibo doesn't get it then S&D will.
