BTW, box office has NO direct correlation to film quality.
Just like your posts have no direct correlation to the topic at hand, i.e. Giamatti's "makeup" nomination is done and gone. Anything else is a sidetrack.
Done!

Look, I'm the person with the least respect for the Golden Globes, but won't they be nominating this for a few categories? I mean, they put In Bruges up for best film/comedy and actor (which it won), on a gross of under $8 million and a Metacritic score less than Duplicity had.
Universal likely already has had a nice get together with the crew, and expects them to remember come the end of the year.

"In Bruges" had an immediate strong following. It also had noteworthy performances from, Farrell, Fiennes and Gleeson. Even the most generous critics haven't been gone crazy for anyone in this thing. Giamatti ain't getting a nod, because no one even knows he's in this movie. And unlike Farrel this year, there will be enough slots in supporting actor that no one (esp. GG) will look back at spy movie from March. "In Bruges" made a lot of critics' top tens, this won't. And so Gilroy got a nod for "Clayton", that was one movie. It's not like he's the new golden baby who'll get a nod for anything, especially a movie that was a box-office disappointment that was seen as a star vehicle over anything else.
Congrats Kristen! All the PD haters can (SPOILER ALERT) Suck it!

Thank you. I had no idea that Giamatti was even in this until I got a look at the cast list in the reviews thread. They don't even promote his apparently Oscar-worthy performance in the commercials.

Seriously, what is this obsession with judging a movie by its trailer and TV ads?
If Universal decides to promote Giamatti and the film, they can send out the DVD as early as when the film goes to the public that way this summer and push him then. He got lots of attention in the reviews. He is well known. The film from what I've read is tailor made for Academy members. What was put in the trailors and TV spots has nothing at all to do with Oscar consideration this far out.
Seriously, how much of Michael Shannon and Taraji P. Henson was included in the trailors and TV spots for their films?

Trailers and commercials are what get people to see the film. If you have a crappy trailer, it's gonna be a lot harder to get people to see your film. On the flip side, a good trailer can help create positive buzz.
Also, while there was no Michael Shannon in any Revolutionary Road trailers, there was PLENTY of Taraji in the Benjamin Button trailers.

Paul Giamatti's chances of getting a best supporting actor nomination have nearly zero correlation with his not being prominent in the trailers or TV ads, not that they in themselves aren't important. You are presenting a straw man argument.
Terrific for Monsters Vs Aliens, very good for Haunting in Connecticut, not good for 12 Rounds among openings.
Knowing held up decently; I Love You Man is showing legs; Duplicity is not.
Watchmen now will struggle to hit $120 million. Combined with the not great international numbers, this now looks like it will not show a profit.
Slumdog Millionaire, out on DVD on Tuesday, will almost certainly fall just short of Juno's $143 million+ gross (the best Fox Searchlight performer). Had the DVD been delayed a week, it would have surpassed it.

Not surprised at "Haunting"'s success. I hadn't heard of it, but then I saw the trailer in front of "Adventureland" on Wednesday, and it had the packed theatre BUZZING.
How are those numbers for "Sunshine Cleaning", seanflynn?
Grammy FYC: Kanye West, 808s & Heartbreak; Black Eyed Peas, The E.N.D.; John Legend, Evolver; Paolo Nutini, Sunny Side Up; David Guetta, One Love; Kelly Clarkson, "Already Gone"; Jordin Sparks, "Battlefield"; Kings Of Leon, "Use Somebody"; Maxwell, "Pretty Wings"
You could say Reese Witherspoon towers above all others this weekend. ;-)

Tony Gilroy is a major jinx to movie stars. First Clooney now Roberts.

In reality, how many big hits has Clooney had? Not many. He had the breakthrough hit with "The Perfect Storm"...and then the "Ocean's" series. That's about it.
Grammy FYC: Kanye West, 808s & Heartbreak; Black Eyed Peas, The E.N.D.; John Legend, Evolver; Paolo Nutini, Sunny Side Up; David Guetta, One Love; Kelly Clarkson, "Already Gone"; Jordin Sparks, "Battlefield"; Kings Of Leon, "Use Somebody"; Maxwell, "Pretty Wings"
George Clooney hits (US + international totals, in millions)
Burn After Reading - $155 Michael Clayton - $93 Syriana - $94 Good Night and Good Luck - $55 Intolerable Cruelty - $120 O Brother Where Art Thou? - $71 Three Kings - $108
These are all films that likely either broke even or made a profit.
That he mixes big budget pictures with riskier efforts is quite commendable. That he has been successful with most of them is admirable. He is one of the most admired and respected people in the industry these days, for good reason.

Because that's the only logical conclusion from what you wrote.
Um. Box office thread?
