The hype machine for Roland Emmerich's end of the world movie kicked into high gear tonight with a 5-minute preview reel that you can see here.

I was able to watch the five-minute clip on a different site.

Still, the one-two combo of Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser, who collaborated with him on 10,000 BC, leads me to suspect that 2012 will be all special effects, CGI, and no real substance.

I like the cast though. John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, and Oliver Platt, Chiwetel Ejofor etc.

If Emmerich can, at least match what I think is his best film, Stargate, he'll have exceeded my expectations.

I found "Stargate" near unwatchable, I have never seen the various television shows spun off from so I cannot comment on their quality, so he will have to do more than that for me. I do not even think I will see "2012" in the theatres if there are acclaimed/Oscar films to watch in the theatres instead.

Well, that's what I mean. Others may cite "Independence Day" as Emmerich's "best".

I find it hard to understand why he gets the funds to keep making films. They must make a lot of money for the players.

I saw an ad for this last night during 'Project Runway' and thought I was watching a video game being played.

The CGI effects looked SO hokey that it looked like they were drawn in with crayon.

I agree.

I stumbled upon this on some network the other night, and the effects were extremely hokey. How this film roped in so many decent actors is beyond me.

Also, it looked just like The Day After Tomorrow. Literally, I thought I was watching that film, until John Cusack popped up.

He is like Uwe Boll with a lot more money to play with.

The 5-minute clip made The Day After Tomorrow look Merchant Ivory.

Here's what I don't understand - wouldn't it make A LOT more sense to make and release this movie in 2012?

I found a working clip of that five minutes, and I found it quite good!
But I share the disdain shown towards Roland Emmerich and I expect absolutely nothing from 2012.
I wouldn't be surprised if that clip gives away the best part of the film.

I think, a nomination for visual effects (and possibly in the sound categories) is imminent, which will only encourage him to make MORE of the same kinds of movies.

Lol!
Wasnt his original 'purpose', to make a Noah's Ark type of film? And that, one of his producers or collaborators convinced him to title it 2012?
I doubt he had even heard of 2012 or the Mayan calendar before that.
Ok, maybe he had. But I wouldnt bet on it.

Well, sure. But apparently, we'll all be dead then so you gotta make the bucks while you can...

I think the scariest thing about 2012 is the prospect of Sarah Palin on a national Presidential ticket.

Nothing in the movies can match the horror of that.

Hahaha. My thoughts exactly. I'm torn. I love apocalyptic movies where the world gets destroyed with lots of CGI effects. However, the acting looks terrible, but then again, the clip was of John Cusack and Amanda Peet. Not the greatest actors in my book. And the CGI while at parts looked cool, some of it really did look like it was straight out of a video game. I mean, its Roland Emmerich, so I'm not expecting any kind of Oscar worthy cinema here. I'll probably see it regardless just cuz the premise is kinda cool.

I think John Cusack is a great actor, and was surprised to see him as part of the cast, which is a good cast.

UMM why am I reminded of Irwin Allen's B-star-studded 70s disastravaganzas?

Some formulas NEVER die!

I am just sad that movie marketing now seems to require that there is some kind of historical monument/building destroyed to draw attention.

That said, do you think that they could blow up Big Ben in the ads for "Bright Star"? Might get some more folks to see the film!

Of course I do appreciate the reviews posted for any and all films, but I was pretty sure there was a thread already for 2012 and here it is.
