OSCARS 2009 Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis - Doubt/Penelope Cruz - Vicky Cristina Barcelona
I'm happy for Josh Brolin (I would like to see him be an Oscar nominee even if I thought Heath Ledger and Eddie Marsan were better), Penelope Cruz, "Wall-E", and especially "Man On Wire".

Anne Hathaway could be the big upset for lead actress this year...Gwyneth was the last one to win at such a young age the lead award but it could happen. Anne has the buzz...

I enjoyed "Slumdog" a lot but do not think it close to the best film this year. After I've seen most of the Oscar type movies ("Revolutionary Road", "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", etc) and some highly acclaimed foreign flicks ("Hunger", "The Class", "Let the Right One In"- which I'm seeing tonight, etc) I doubt it would make my top ten list this year.

Not crazy about their acting choices at all. Haven't seen Gran Torino but I hated Rachel Getting Married and Anne Hathaway, wasn't crazy about Penelope Cruz in VCB and Josh Brolin wasn't even the best performance in Milk let alone the best performance by a supporting actor all year even though I do like Josh Brolin. However I do love their Best Picture choice Slumdog Millionaire.

I like seeing the notices for "Frozen River", "The Visitor", Anne Hathaway for best actress, "The Dark Knight," "WALL-E", "Man on Wire," and Penelope Cruz for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" in supporting actress.

I am very surprised with Anne Hathaway's win. I never expected that! I guess Meryl Streep better watch out, because her win is not a certain thing anymore...
And "Gomorrah" was snubbed on their top 5 foreign films list!!!

I think the snub of Cannes best picture winner "The Class" is an even bigger surprise.

BTW - off topic somewhat - 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is eligible for FL film from the NY Film Critics - it did not open in NY until after January 1. It likely will be competitive for the award, and might win it.

I consider the film overrated, but have affection for it. If it romps all the way to Oscar, I won't be all that bothered. Not sure how much of a backlash you'll be able to spearhead.
"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)
