Every once in a while, an actor like Richard Jenkins gets to step out of supporting and guest roles and take his turn in the spotlight. What character actors do you think deserve a major showcase?
A couple of actors come to mind for me: Jeanetta Arnette, who has small but crucial roles in "Boys Don't Cry" and "Snow Angels," where she added so much texture to what was on the page. And Denis O'Hare, who is in just about everything and always a welcome sight.
I'm sure there are tons more I'm just not thinking of. I'll post more if I remember.

"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)
With the right cooky/off-beat lead, Jane Lynch could headline one hell of a film. I'm thinking along the lines of Steve Carell in 40 Year Old Virgin or Molly Shannon in Year of the Dog. She deserves it too.
I have loved this actress forever, especially in Million Dollar Baby where she played against type and totally blew her scenes out of the water as Hilary Swank's nasty, trailer trash mother- "Find a man Mary Ann. Live proper! People hear about what you're doin, and they laugh!"

Ah, how could I forget her! Margo Martindale had a two-episode arc on "Dexter" last season that knocked me on my ass and made me think, what could she be capable of if given a juicy leading role?

I definitely agree with JK Simmons. He does his usual schtick really well, but the range and depth he showed on Oz makes me want to see what he could with an actual vehicle.
Grace Zabriskie (she should be playing the lead in the film version of August: Osage County!)
Siobhan Fallon
Celia Weston
Beth Grant
Sophie Lee
Missi Pyle (she was the lead in Bachelorman and was the only good thing about that film)
Wendy Worthington
Jeanette Brox
Regina Taylor
Liz Smith
Ruth Sheen
Claire Skinner
Fiona Shaw
Claudie Blakley
Natasha Wightman
Kathryn Hunter
Rutina Wesley
Leslie Mann
Noemie Lvovsky
Mari Natsuki (her crazy, kinda-good/kinda-bad supporting performance in "Shojo" makes me wonder what she could do with a lead role - it would be funny, at the very least)
For the boys:
Enrique Villen
Simon McBurney
Noah Emmerich
Arliss Howard
Antonio 'Morris' Duran
Eddie Marsan
And two great supporting actors on a meh show - Becki Newton and Michael Urie from Ugly Betty - both of whom are great actors but undervalued by the show and the Emmys...

I've said it before and will say it again: Jane Lynch and Edie McClurg.
One actress i felt never got the chance to have her breakout role in film or television (but certianly did in theater) is the late Florence Stanely who i fondly remember from her many sitcom roles in the 1980's and 1990's. Though most know her from "Barney Miller" or theater i will always recall her as Judge Wilbur on the series "My Two Dads" and from her role on NBC's "Nurses".
Praying The Daytime Emmys air on TV in 2010!

I just happened to catch the beginning of "Ghost Town" on TV last night, and didn't realize that Wiig had a small role in that. And in her scenes, she once again stole the show...from Ricky Gervais of all people.

Margo Martindale is an excellent notice. She has been great in absolutely everything in which I've seen her, including Dexter and Million Dollar Baby. However, her best role by far was as the repressed, alcoholic, upper class neighbor on the little-watched TV series "The Riches." She was superb and stole the spotlight from everyone around her in every scene. If someone gives her a juicy starring role I can only imagine what she'll do with it.
Speaking of people who have done great supporting work on television (like Simmons and Martindale, etc.), I would throw out Elizabeth Perkins. I would hope that her wonderful work on Weeds would lead to her getting another chance in film. It probably won't, but it should.
