Eh, who can blame them? I myself can hardly remember a thing about Lurhmann's forgettable musical number. Beside, isn't it well known Streisand suffers from stage fright? And I suppose Streep must have read some of the Mamma Mia reviews...
1. No one should expect Meryl Streep to be the World's Greatest Living Brain Surgeon, or World's Greatest Living Singer. Perhaps World's Greatest Living Actress should be enough.
2. No one, least of all Baz Luhrmann, should expect the likes of Barbra Streisand or Meryl Streep to play second fiddle to Beyoncé Knowles. I mean, really!
MERYL WAS A NOMINEE ALL DRESSED UP...SO OF COURSE SHE WOULD NEVER CHANGE TO GET UP ON THE STAGE TO SING..AND THEN CHANGE BACK...NOT HER STYLE..AND STREISAND WOULD NEVER BE PART OF A MUSICAL NUMBER...SHE IS THE MUSICAL NUMBER...SO I THINK THE WHOLE STORY IS HOGWASH..PURE CRAP...AND WHY DOES TOM ON'NEIL MAKE STUFF UP LIKE THIS 2 MONTHS AFTER THE OSCARS?? REALLY TOM...I HAPPEN TO LIVE NEAR MERYL STREEP IN CONN....AND I ASKED HER ABOUT HER PORTION OF YOUR STORY...SHE TOLD ME THAT NONE OF IT IS TRUE..SHE WASNT EVEN ASKED...SO STOP SPREADING NONSENSE HERE...

You do realise that people hate reading all-CAPS messages?
That's the part of Connecticut that is in Long Island, NY, where you live according to your tag?
Sorry, not buying this for a minute. Even in the extremely remote chance that you live anywhere near Streep, the idea that since Tom posted this a couple days ago you a) saw or talked to her, and then b) asked her, hey Meryl, what's this about you turning down a chance to sing at the Oscars - is so ridiculous as to undercut your unlikely story that you are a member of the acting branch, which has always been suspect anyway.

Maybe that's why it was in all capital letters. So that he'd be on the record as saying it, but at the same time no one would read it and then point out how bogus the story was.

You figure she would have been madder at Helen Hunt. hahaha ;-)

I'm glad that both Babs and Meryl refused to perform at the Oscars because they certainly don't need to play second fiddle to the likes of Beyonce and Jackman.
Good for them!

Mary Louise (as her friends call her) appreciated the kind things Oscarnutten had to say about her performance in Doubt, but was not too thrilled that he/she had started pushing Kate Winslet for the win (at the time for Revolutionary Road, before she/he had even seen it), and blames him/her for her loss this year.
