I'm afraid I don't remember the rules of the Campaign thread, and whether or not we're allowed to make any comments on certain people being pushed... but I would like to just go ahead and say:
Philip Seymour Hoffman for Lead in Doubt? If that's the case, I don't think the poor guy has a friggin' chance.
And Langella and Sheen both for Lead will also be tough. If they both deserve to be nominated, I hope they both get one each. But if it comes down to one and the other, I'll be a little upset. Langella is favorite right now, but Sheen just looks too good from the trailer clips.
My Early Early Oscar Predictions:
PICTURE: Revolutionary Road DIRECTOR: David Fincher, Curious Case of Benjamin Button ACTOR: Leonardo DiCaprio, Revolutionary Road or Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon ACTRESS: Meryl Streep, Doubt or Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road SUPPORTING ACTOR: Heath Ledger, Dark Knight or Robert Downey, Jr., The Soloist SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Amy Adams, Doubt, or Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Burn After Reading or Milk ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Frost/Nixon, Doubt, or Benjamin Button ANIMATED FEATURE: Wall.E

So true. I know it's probably the right category, but if he was submited in Supporting he could've gave Heath a run for the award. And the same can be said about Michael Sheen. If it didn't work at the Tonys why would it work at the Oscars?
FYC: The Dark Knight To sweep this award season.

Um, that's assuming the same people who were nominated for the Tonys that year will be nominated for the Oscars nest year.

I mean, this is seriously going to jerk around with my predictions now. Placing Sheen in Lead could very well ruin his Oscar chances again (he was snubbed for The Queen, if you recall), or he could end up accidentally knocking Langella out of the race. I'd love to see a Finch/Holden double Actor nom scenario play out, but I'm seriously beginning to doubt it.
And speaking of Doubt, I don't think PSH has a chance riding that film to the Actor race, especially with how other contenders are lining up so strongly. If anything, he might slip in with the Synedoche, New York bizarro-comedy game.

Don't knock Hoffman out until you have seen the performance. Word has leaked that Sean Penn is not as strong in MILK as many expected. Sheen won't stand a chance against Langella for Lead. I predict Downey Jr, Hoffman, Langella, Penn and maybe Roarke. I am not convinced Hollywood is going to embrace Roarke.
Oh, and I just noticed on the Miramax for your consideration site, they yanked Blindness lol

Where is this "word" you're hearing about? Because I'm reading the exact opposite on Jeffrey Wells' and Michael D'Angelo's sites. They say he's excellent and a lock for a nom. (Wells is reporting from colleagues of his; he didn't see the film yet.)

The word came off Incontention. Here it is: David Poland takes stock 22 weeks out, and somehow thinks early buzz on Sean Penn’s “Milk” performance is “soft.” [Movie City News]
It is under the 9/26 Oscar Roundup

First of all, I found the Christopher Tapley article referencing David Poland's article, but I'm having trouble finding the article itself. I'd like to see the primary source of that quoted 'soft'.
Because, secondly, it looks to me like you misread it. He didn't say the performance was soft. He said, at this point there is very little buzz. The BUZZ is soft, not the performance. Which could mean not many people have seen the performance for it to be talked up yet. Or at least, that was the situation two weeks ago.
In any event, here's the Jeffrey Wells article I mentioned:
"I was able to catch an early screening of Milk in Portland this weekend, and can confirm that it's stellar," a critic friend wrote last night. "It's impassioned and immediate, with beautiful use of light. It looks as if Gus Van Sant shot every major scene around 4:30 pm -- not the 'golden hour' but that especially crisp hour right before.
"I'm not much of a Sean Penn fan --- I generally find his showiness distracting -- but he disappears into Harvey Milk. I think he's a lock for a Best Actor nomination. James Franco is also exceptionally subtle, though I suspect his low-key work will be ignored in favor of Josh Brolin's performance as Dan White, who gets a couple of emotive clips in, and Emile Hirsch, who plays completely against expectations as a street hustler who Milk convinces to politically organize his fellow tricks.
"The most interesting thing to me about the movie -- and the reason why I thought I'd write you about it -- is that I don't think it would have been possible without Brokeback Mountain's mainstream success. This is a picture focusing on an activist gay man with a flamboyant streak and several lovers (mostly offscreen) and despite the poignant ending, it focuses less on gay suffering and more on the thrill of finding personal identity and a political voice. It isn't afraid to come busting joyfully out of the closet, and I'm not sure it could have gotten the traction it will get, if not for Brokeback."
It doesn't include the Dan White trail and the twinkie defense, the subsequent aquittal and the White Night Riots at City Hall that followed, he says. "It ends at the candlelight vigil," he explains. The other stuff is covered in a "where are they now?" text.
