I've been thinking about this for some time, and i really think that 2005 Lead Actress is the best line up i've seen. Even though my favourite (not what i consider the best) performance was Winslet's, I ultimately think Imelda Staunton should've won. But what's so good about that category is that you can mount an argument for all five outstanding performances. What made the race even more interesting was the 5 completely different characters! The last movie of that line up that i watched was 'Maria Full of Grace', and Sandino Moreno blew me away in it! And Bening is always a treat to watch, and she blew it out of the park in being julia.
So yeah, 2005 Lead Actress is my favourite category!
Annette Bening - Being Julia Catalina Sandino Moreno - Maria Full of Grace Imelda Staunton - Vera Drake Hilary Swank - Million Dollar Baby Kate Winslet - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Which do you guys think was the best category?

You guys really need to see more movies. No offense, Vozas, but if the 2005 Best Actress lineup is your favorite, then I assume you haven't seen many Best Actress nominees. Many people consider that to be one of the weakest lineups.
I can name many, many more stronger Best Actress lineup than that one. The 1950s, '60s and '70s were notorious for some very strong Best Actress lineups. And the '80s and '90s had their standout years, too.
And bocaboy7---
I have to strongly disagree with you, too. That 2006 Best Supporting Actress race was horrid. Keener and McDormand are fine actresses, but those are two of their weaker performances. Williams was effective, but too brief and I'm indifferent to Weisz. Only Amy Adams' performance evokes any kind of excitement from me.
Jodie Foster - The Acussed Sigourney Weaver - Gorillas in the mist Melanie Griffith - Working Girl Glenn Close - Dangerous Liasons Meryl Streep - A cry in the dark
------
Sigourney Weaver - Working Girls Joan Cusack - Working Girl Michelle Pfeiffer - Dangerous Liasons Frances McDormand - Mississippi Burning Geena Davis - el turista accidental
And 62 for women was great too. Remick, Bancroft, Hepburn...

1) Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) 2) Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain) 3) Joaquin Pheonix (Walk the Line) 4) Terrence Howard (Hustle & Flow) 5) David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck)
These are five performances that would have won Oscars almost any other year (especially Heath and Joaquin).
DoubleD, none taken! i don't know much about movies before the 90s, except for those must sees. but at least in the 90s and 00s, i really loved that category

1962 Best Actress Anne Bancroft-The Miracle Worker (W) Bette Davis-Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? Katherine Hepburn-Long Days Journey Into Night Geraldine Page-Sweet Bird Of Youth Lee Remick-The Days Of Wine & Roses
1967 Best Actor Rod Steiger-In the Heat of the Night (W) Warren Beatty-Bonnie and Clyde Dustin Hoffman-The Graduate Paul Newman-Cool Hand Luke Spencer Tracy-Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
1967 Best Actress Katharine Hepburn-Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? (W) Anne Bancroft-The Graduate Faye Dunaway-Bonnie and Clyde Edith Evans-The Whisperers Audrey Hepburn-Wait Until Dark
3 of my favorite races & even though I've never been a huge fan of Dinner, it was still the last Hepburn & Tracy film so it does have some sentimental value.

Its only an opinion, and to say that this was Keener's weaker performance, in my opinion, is not right. I thought she was great in capote, and definetly deserved the oscar nod. I think that in that year, that was the best catagory, and I still think that these 5 women deserved to be nominated for their roles in that year.

I also really loved the 1980 Supporting Actor lineup:
Judd Hirsch, Ordinary People Timothy Hutton, Ordinary People (The winner) Michael O'Keefe, The Great Santini Joe Pesci, Raging Bull Jason Robards, Melvin and Howard
I am in full support of Hutton's win (one of the very couple of category frauds I can support because the performance is too good) because I think his performance is one of the best I've ever seen.
Pesci and Hirsch come in after him.
