FINAL OSCAR PREDICTIONS
January 12, 2009

BEST PICTURE
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Milk
Slumdog Millionaire
Wall-E

alt. Frost/Nixon

I've dropped Frost/Nixon from this lineup since a) it has no chance of winning the top award, so why bother placing it as a nominee to begin with, and b) I don't see all the DGA and PGA nominees matching up. And I refuse to drop two of the most original and profitable films from my list. Yes, I'm talking about Dark Knight and Wall-E. I want to have my cake and eat it too. I know that there's a 98% chance that only 1 of these films will actually prevail, and Howards's film will be the next Good Night, and Good Luck. But I just won't do that to movies I love.

Slumdog Millionaire is now the Best Picture frontrunner. I wish I knew when it was going to be released wide, because a $30 million box-office is still rather low. It's a fantastic story, however, and I want it to be top dog Feb. 22nd.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, well on its way to making over $100 million at the box-office, will probably not prevail in the top races Feburary. I see it winning makeup, visual effects and perhaps score. But that's it. Pitt and Henson won't win, and Blanchett is still trying to get nominated. But it will lead the Oscar nominations.

Milk is going to make it, and its NYFC is a strong sign that it's a critical favorite, and also its BFC Ensemble win shows immense support.

Doubt, Revolutionary Road and The Reader can hope for acting nods, but no best pic. And finally The Wrestler may be the only gritty indie film that has a prayer of making it in the final five, but as of now these are my choices of who will be called out January 22, 2009.

PREDICTED WINNER: Slumdog Millionaire

BEST DIRECTOR
David Fincher for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Christopher Nolan for The Dark Knight
Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon
Gus Van Sant for Milk
Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire

alt. Mike Leigh for Happy Go Lucky

Watch out for critics winner Leigh. I never discount the major film critics, especially in the Best Director category. There are always your Fernando Merilless and Jason Reitman's floating around- oh, and Mike Leigh's too.

Woody Allen is also a potential spoiler.

PREDICTED WINNER: Danny Boyle

BEST ACTOR
Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino
Frank Langella in Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn in Milk
Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler

alt. Richard Jenkins in The Visitor

Pitt and Jenkins still look shakey in my book. And I really want to put down Clint Eastwood and Dustin Hoffman, two veteran actors who can woo anybody. But I think Eastwood's reviews have still been very mixed, where as Jenkins seems to have strong supporters. And Pitt seems to be popular enough to ride the Benjamin Button craze.

PREDICTED WINNER: Sean Penn

BEST ACTRESS
Anne Hathaway in Rachel Getting Married
Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky
Angelina Jolie in Changeling
Meryl Streep in Doubt
Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road

alt. Cate Blanchett in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Melissa Leo in Frozen River, Kristin Scott Thomas in I've Loved You So Long

After tonight's Golden Globe awards, regardless of ballots already being turned in, it seems like Winslet will be nominated for my "favorite" film of the year (sarcasm there). Maybe the Oscars will pull a Jim Carrey on us and still snub her, so she can get all the focus on her deserved Oscar for The Reader. I really want to drop her from the supporting race for that film, and place her in the lead for this. I reserve the right to do this up to 5am before the nominations are announced too, I guess. Hmmm...I'm going to still say she loses lead actress, and wins supporting.

Cate Blanchett, who I had been rooting for all season long, sadly had to be dropped. If she makes it, I'll beat myself up for dropping her. But who does she replace? All of these women seemed locked and loaded. Even Angelina Jolie, who despite snubs last year, seems to be helped by the Clint Eastwood factor + guilt of overlooking her last year + the simple fact that she IS after all, Angelina Jolie.

Sally Hawkins is getting nominated. I don't understand why some posters still replace her with Melissa Leo. It ain't happening. I can see Leo getting in WITH Sally Hawkins, but not without. Hawkins has NYFCC, LAFCC, NSFCC & Golden Globe (Comedy). She's in.

That leaves us the two original locks of the evening- Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. Could Hathaway be snubbed? It's a distinct possibility. I can't see Streep being overlooked just because they love her, and will nominate her even for her underwhelming work (eg Music of the Heart). But Hathaway has enough surge going for her.

I think this is the list folks. I detest Winslet getting in for a rotten film and a performance I might need to re-analyze, but this is how it seems to be shaping up. For those thinking her double nomination will confuse voters on which performance to vote her, trust me it won't. This never stopped Jamie Foxx in 2004, or Holly Hunter in 1993. Yeah maybe Julianne Moore and Sigourney Weaver, but they know Winslet is due. At least this is turning out to be a nail-biting awards season. The SAG awards might clear things up. I see Winslet winning supporting, and Streep winning lead. Hathaway and Davis/Cruz are still potential spoilers. I can't see Winslet taking a lead SAG, but God anything is possible now.

PREDICTED WINNER: Meryl Streep

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Josh Brolin in Milk
Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder
Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt
Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
Dev Patel in Slumdog Millionaire

alt. James Franco in Milk

Pretty boring lineup for me- I usually have at least one wild card. But I can't fathom James Franco getting in for Milk when I don't find his role as interesting, and like my Amy Adams arguement for supporting actress, find him getting enough number 1's. But anything is possible. Also Slumdog will need an acting nod in my book to sort of show the broad support that it is, after all, a Best Picture frontrunner. Let's not make it another Braveheart year, shall we?

What does all this matter anyways, since Heath Ledger will undoubtedly win the Oscar for playing the Joker. Even though I personally feel Jack Nicholson is still the ultimate man in clown makeup, Ledger gave a more psychological side to the character- much like Michelle Pfeiffer's overlooked work in Batman Returns as Catwoman.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Penelope Cruz in Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis in Doubt
Taraji P. Henson in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei in The Wrestler
Kate Winslet in The Reader

alt. Amy Adams in Doubt, Rosemarie DeWitt in Rachel Getting Married

Here are your final five best supporting actress nominees. Nothing to be changed here. Winslet, who took a nice surprise win at the BFC tonight over Cruz, has a meatier role, and more leverage on her plate (She will have 6 nominations vs. Cruz's 2). It really matters with Globe and SAG however.

Only Rosemarie DeWitt can unseat Henson, but I don't find that likely since Henson is in a more profitable and likeable movie. My Winger notion was something I had pondered, but quickly threw back away.

PREDICTED WINNER: Kate Winslet

Wall-e is a million percent deserving of a Best Picture nomination. It is considered by just about everybody as one of the very best movies of the year; it has a critic's awards and top ten lists cred to the max; it's one of the most loved movies of the year. It makes me angry to hear somebody say that it will win best animated so it doesn't deserve a best picture nom. That is ludicrous. A great movie is a great movie period. An animated movie is just as much a product of human artistry as any other movie so why should it be ghettoized. A best pic nom would mean a lot more, anyway. Finally, it's apalling that in the 70+ years of Oscars, only one animated movie has been nominated. Think of all the great movies from Snow White, Fantasia, Pinocchio and Cinderella to Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Lion King to all the masterpieces from Pixar. How many of the movies that got nominated ahead of them do people even give a crap about today (to put it bluntly) while the animated movies are treasured by generation after generation. Will the Reader or Revolutionary Road or Frost/Nixon leave a lasting legacy? Probably not. Will Wall-e? With history as a guide, I say a earth-shaking yes. If Wall-e doesn't deserve a best pic nom, no movie does.

So with that off my chest, I predict in a fusion of should be/will be nominated that it will be a populist year and that the Best Pic noms will be:
1. Benjamin Button
2. Dark Knight
3. Milk
4. Slumdog Millionaire
5. Wall-e

MY FINAL LIST OF NOMINATIONS:

BEST PICTURE
(1) Milk
(2) Curious Case of Benjamin Button
(3) Slumdog Millionaire
(4) Dark Knight
(5) WALL*E

NOTE: Frost/Nixon was on my first ever 2008 Best Picture list, and has begun to gain steam again; if anyone is to jump into the #4 or #5 spot, it will be that, I think.

BEST DIRECTOR
(1) David Fincher, Benjamin Button
(2) Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
(3) Gus Van Sant, Milk
(4) Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight
(5) Ron Howard, Frost/Nixon

NOTE: Stephen Daldry will take the last spots if anyone. Or maybe Sam Mendes.

BEST ACTOR
(1) Sean Penn, Milk
(2) Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
(3) Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
(4) Leonardo DiCaprio, Revolutionary Road
(5) Clint Eastwood, Gran Torino

NOTE: Please, Richard Jenkins, prove me wrong.

BEST ACTRESS
(1) Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road
(2) Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
(3) Meryl Streep, Doubt
(4) Angelina Jolie, Changeling
(5) Sally Hawkins, Happy Go Lucky

NOTE: If not Hawkins, then Leo or Scott Thomas. And poor Blanchett is losing steam every second.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
(1) Heath Ledger, Dark Knight
(2) Philip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt
(3) Josh Brolin, Milk
(4) Robert Downey Jr., Tropic Thunder
(5) Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road

NOTE: I just don't want Dev Patel up there. I don't know why.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
(1) Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
(2) Kate Winslet, The Reader
(3) Viola Davis, Doubt
(4) Rosemarie DeWitt, Rachel Getting Married
(5) Amy Adams, Doubt

NOTE: Taraji P. Henson and Marisa Tomei might jump in somewhere.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
(1) Milk
(2) Wall*E
(3) Rachel Getting Married
(4) Happy Go Lucky
(5) In Bruges

NOTE: I beg that Vicky Cristina Barcelona's bleh script doesn't make it in, but knowing Oscar's love for Woody Allen... *shrugs*. An indie like The Visitor or Ballast would be a welcomed nod.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
(1) Slumdog Millionaire
(2) Curious Case of Benjamin Button
(3) Revolutionary Road
(4) The Reader
(5) Frost/Nixon

NOTE: I want Dark Knight to make it, but complaints about the third act make me think twice. Doubt could be in, but it might be far too close to the play to deserve seperate recognition.

ANIMATED FEATURE
(1) Wall*E
(2) Kung Fu Panda
(3) Bolt

NOTE: Waltz for Bashir might get more of a push in documentary feature.

Still predicting "Australia" not only to be nominated for best picture but to win when it has won no critics awards and did not even wrangle nominations for the Golden Globes, SAG and Critics' Choice Awards? Same with "Che".

This has turned out to be one of the more exciting awards seasons. There are many actors that could easily fill any of the 20 acting slots just as well as the ones predicted here. The key word is unpredictable. While many of us share many of the same nominees there are races just too hard to call. In the actor/actress category will Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie be snubbed once again ? I strongly feel that Richard Jenkins will somehow sneak into the Best Actor race-but at whose expense? Eastwood seems to be assured a nomination yet he seems to be the only actor among the five that can slide to the side like one of those childhood sliding puzzles and allow Jenkins to move in. Actress race is the strongest I have seen in quite sometime. In a year that Melissa Leo from FROZEN RIVER , Kristen Scott Thomas from IVE LOVED YOU SO LONG, Cate Blanchett from BENJAMIN BUTTON and Michelle Williams from WENDY AND LUCY may not make it into the coveted 5 is a great year indeed. Blanchett may overcome and steal Jolie's slot-but I hope not. Jolie gave a classic movie star performance in CHANGELING and deserves to be taken on her acting merit rather than tabloid one. The indie slot could easily have either Leo or Thomas filling in for Hawkins but based on Mike Leigh's track record of actresses being nominated for his films Hawkins seems a shoo-in.
The actor slot without DiCaprio for REVOLUTIONARY BROAD or Michael Sheen and Josh Brolin for their presidential themed films in a n election year for FROST/NIXON and W. respectively seems a crime.
Amy Adams may swoop in on either DOUBT's strength or not be because it is a weak film imho. I wouldn't discount kathy Bates for REVOLUTIONARY ROAD as a surprise Supp Actress nominee. The RACHEL supporting women of veteran Debra Winger and newcomer Rosemarie DeWitt may cancel each other out or either one may usurp Henson for her luminous turn in BUTTON. Winger seems to have a better shot if not only for her fight scene but because of her Oscar pedigree and she just may take not onlt the nomination but a surprise win for her body of work. SEARCHING FOR ELUSIVE OSCAR-DEBRA WINGER may be Roseanna Arquette's sequel to her outstanding docu on the star from a few years back. I am holding on tightly for Marisa Tomei to pull a nom for her heartwrenching turn in THE WRESTLER but she may also be a weak link here sans a sag nomination.
Michael shannon's chilling turn in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD will relinquish his deserved nomination to Patel for an essentially lead role in the very popular SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.
All in all -every category is chock full of alternatives-none more so than Best Song with a year of truly fine songs in movies. This award season is hot
