The new AFI special airs on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 in a 3-hour special starting at 8 PM ET on CBS. In this special, they are counting down the top ten films in these ten genres:

More information on their criteria for selecting these films and the guest stars that will be hosting these genre countdowns on the telecast can be found on the AFI web page. For our challenge, let's try to create individual top ten lists for each of these genres.

These lists are getting tired. They should only do one more list.

The People's List.

The top 100 films that regular people like.

"The Nightmare Before Christmas" definitely won't be there. I think another Pixar movie (like "Finding Nemo") could be in there. But it will definitely be dominated by Disney classics (like "Cinderella," which has to be in there over "Dumbo").

They should do a foreign films list so when people look at the AFI lists they'll realize there are other and better films out there.

Here's my guess as to what is going to make their top list. I'm not going to list ten in each category, because that is one hundred films and it would take me one hundred minutes or more to type out:

Animation:
Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs (1937)
RU: many contenders, including Cinderella, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Lion King, Beauty and The Beast

Courtroom Drama:
Judgement at Nuremburg (1961)
RU: Inherit the Wind, 12 Angry Men, Anatomy of A Murder, In Cold Blood, Witness for The Prosecution, A Man for All Seasons

Epic:
Gone With the Wind (1939) Red Face
RU: Godfather2, Lawrence of Arabia, Titanic (1997)

Fantasy:
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
RU: TLOTR, It's a Wonderful Life, Jason and The Argonauts, King Kong (1933)

Gangster:
The Godfather (1972)
RU: Godfather2, On The Waterfront, Pulp Fiction, Bonny and Clyde, Goodfellas, Angels with Dirty Faces

Mystery:
Chinatown (1974)
RU: Maltese Falcon, Rebecca, Rear Window, Thin Man, Hound of the Baskervilles

Romantic Comedy:
Annie Hall (1977)
RU: It Happened One Night, Roman Holiday, Philadelphia Story, Sabrina (1954)

Sci-fi:
Star Wars Ep 1V, The New Hope (1977)
Who knows what they're going to eventually choose here? RU's I'll go with: Jurassic Park, Terminator2, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Alien, The Fly (1986), Bladerunner, 2001 A Space Odyssey

Sports:
Raging Bull (1980)
RU: The Natural, Pride of the Yankees, 8 Men Out, Rocky

Western:
Searchers (1956)
RU: Stage Coach, Shane, Wild Bunch, Ox-Bow Incident, Giant, High Noon, Magnificent Seven

I left a lot out and these arent necessarily my personal choices, but I suspect we'll be seeing these on their top lists. Also, I didnt see Treasure of the Sierra Madre as one of their choices. Too bad, because I thought it was a masterpiece of film making.

This is the typical AFI mishmash - half great choices, half ridiculous.

And as always, no new ground is broken, no fresh insights, no different films for people to discover.
