Somehow if the Image awards snub Precious, then we'd officially have a case of backlash.

It pains me to see that The Hurt Locker and Obsessed on the same group.

I hope The Office wins as Best Comedy Series for this year's Emmy Awards.

I thought Jamaal Woodlard and Angela Bassett, even with her limited screen time, were both great in Notorious.
I also thought Jamie Foxx was quite good in The Soloist.

It's interesting that Precious didnt make your prediction list for Outstanding Motion Picture.

PRESUMABLY you would have a problem with an awards show that excluded black actors?

But it's hunky-dory to exclude white actors?

Sorry, it's RACIST.

I do not watch the Image Awards or Alma Awards, the Latino film awards, because in excluding large groups of people the pickings become slim and the competition can be embarrassing. Still, I do not think celebrating your own culture is the same as being biased against others.

And there are all sorts of film festivals, awards and so on that celebrate a culture (Middle Eastern film festivals, Jewish film festivals, Asian American film festivals, etc.). They are trying to inspire and raise interest within their communities. Just because they are covering only a small slice of humanity does not mean they are attacking the other parts of it.

Are the GLAAD awards heterophobic because they honor only gay-themed films?

I think the word for it would be heterophobic rather than homophobic.

The GLADD awards are the worst. Remember when the gave Jennifer Anistion some Lifetime Achievement Award or some crap for being in a couple of cheesy movies with gay characters? WTF

For all these minority group awards, there is a small level of worthiness, at least at some point, for highlighting achievement in the group.

But essentially, they are fundraisers for their groups, nothing much more, and as such, of little worth in terms of recognition or importance.

Which makes them distinct from almost every other award group in absolutely no discernible way.

The difference is that their initial raison d'etre was to be fundraisers; that is not the case with the Oscars, most critics' groups, even the GGs.

And that they are fundraisers means that their nominations often reflect those from whom the want to raise funds. Whatever faults the Oscars or critics' groups have, it's not so blatant.

(Of course the Academy started the awards as window-dressing for its initial purpose, which was union-busting as the directors and writers started to organize in the late 1920s).

Isn't the same criticism valid against NBR?

Other awards groups, I take seriously. I have serious reservations about NBR.

NBR is the most valid.

Both NYFC and LAFC do finance their relatively low budgets by their dinners. It keeps them from getting too esoteric in their awards, and also encourages them to spread the wealth so there will be more companies represented.

I have been told by a long time NYFC member that he has seen times when being excited about having a winner at their dinner and fawning over the critics personally has sometimes seemed to influence close races. (He cited specifically Cameron Diaz/There's Something About...)

The NSFC has no dinner; they send out the awards a week or so later.
