Something written about Sylvie Testud in a The Auteurs review of "Lourdes" (http://www.theauteurs.com/notebook/posts/1052) got me thinking. What contemporary actors have the kind of look, style and talent that would have made them hot commodities in the silent era?
Sylvie Testud I completely agree with, but here are a few others...
Naomi Watts's emotional immediacy and grasp of facial expression for transmission of character detail would have made her a hot commodity in the 20s. So would her lookalike Marie-Josee Croze, who is similarly skilled in "facial acting"
Severine Caneele, who I've raved about before, has a completely lucid face, the emotions come through so clearly that you could watch with the sound off and get a grasp of how she's feeling.
Zooey Deschanel has the look of a silent film star. Dunno if she'd be a great actress of that time but she'd be popular with the public.
Sandrine Bonnaire is another actress with complete emotional availability in her face... she'd do very well
Dunno about actors. Maybe Jim Carrey, what with his... elasticity. Obviously he wouldn't be performing his current brand of comedy were he working in the 20s, but I'm sure he could put his facial antics to good use.

Faye Dunaway always reminds me of Norma Desmond, and she has great facial expressions that the audiences can easily read. She also has a very 20s look(or she did when she was younger).
I could see Colin Farrell as a silent film comedian.
Helena Bonham Cater. In Wings of the Dove she conveyed a great deal of emotions through her incredibly expressive facial expressions. She also has a stunning, timeless beauty that would lend itself well to this era.
I keep on thinking Melanie Laurent, especially after seeing Inglourious Basterds! For some reason she was the first actress to immediately pop into my head when I read the title of this thread.
Others - Kate Winslet...

I'm going to say now that if anyone mentions Meryl Streep I'm going to just DIE
