Toni Collette Miranda Richardson Ralph Fiennes Isabelle Huppert Sandrine Bonnaire
and a ton others who unfortunately will never, ever have a chance at actually winning.

I Keanu Reeves never fails to impress you with his range than you have failed to see many of his films. LOL.
Also, Emme Thompson has Oscar for both screenwriting ("Sense and Sensibility") and acting ("Howards End"). Did you want her to win another acting Oscar?

I waited a long time to post this, since this person is so obvious and so deserving and has had one of the greatest acting careers of anyone in film.
He has been a nominee for acting; he is widely admired by his colleagues; winners like Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman and many others have spoken out about the quality of his acting; he has played with many of the greats and more than held his own with them.
Yet like many previous greats, what he does he does so well and with so little affectation that too many people don't appreciate how much talent and skill is involved in what he does as an actor.
It's ridiculous that his name even needs to be mentioned, so I won't. It should be obvious who I am talking about.
Angela Bassett Sandra Bullock Ruby Dee- probably wishful thinking John Travolta- Don Cheadle Leonardo DiCaprio- I'd love for him to win this year and have Kate present it to him Cameron Diaz Jeffery Wright- MLK biopic? Eugene Allen biopic? Hugh Jackman- a musical? Viola Davis Tarji P. Henson- Diana Ross biopic/Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis biopic? Mo'Nique- there's hope Chiwetel Ejiofor

I think since he has several Oscars people are just forgetting about his acting. I wish I would have added him to my list, and will now, but though I am happy he has been nominated, and actually would have liked him to be nominated a few more times, I cannot think of a time I would have wanted him to win best actor.

It's not clear if he ever will act again; he already has done so twice after announcing retirement. And his brilliant performance in Gran Torino - for which I believe he should have won (he also deserved it for Unforgiven) - is such a perfect summation of his career that at some level it would be wrong for him to try to top it.
Obviously and understandably this thread has been mainly about actors who are much younger and have long careers ahead of them, but there have been a few veterans who may not have another chance, so I thought his inclusion was way over due.
Eli Wallach, Jeanne Moreau, Bibi Andersson would be three others who come to mind.

What is it between you and him? I assure you, YOU just ain't his type!
PS: Oh, NOW you use Meryl Streep's name as an example of great acting, when it suits your purpose.
I am on record here frequently praising Meryl Streep. I have nothing on you when it comes to opportunistic use of people when it suits my purposes.
It was precisely because of my admiration of her that I was horrified at the prospect of her winning for Doubt; no one who read my posts could have missed that, since I said it a lot. I also stated on several occasions that the fault likely lay more with Shanley's direction of her than on Streep. (Eastwood has given bad performances as well, as have most great actors).
What it "is" is that I appreciate great film acting of all types, and none more than that by the great archetypes, whether they be Edward G. Robinson, Cary Grant, James Stewart, Fred MacMurray, and yes, Clint Eastwood, irrespective of whether they conform to some narrow (usually stage-related) definition of what acting is.

But none as hammy or obvious as Streep's in Doubt.
Thank you for reinforcing my point.
Up to this point, this thread hasn't been about debating individual people mentioned, nor should it be - that you objected to my choice has to do with you wanting to start a fight with me. You're on your own, since I'm not going to fall for the bait.

It would be great to see Eastwood win and his snub last year was a snub somewhere on the level of Dark Knight and WALL-E in my opinion. Has a headlining hollywood icon in a career defining performance that is both a box office smash and critically acclaimed ever not been nominated before?
Also, without Jim Carrey or Paul Giamatti being nominated in 2004 Eastwood should have easily won that year as well.
Congratulations West Wing, Emmys most honored drama. 27 Emmys including 4 best drama series "What's Next?"

Had Eastwood never won an Oscar for directing or producing, my guess is that he would have gotten an acting one by now. I understand the trade-off; most Oscar wins for icons are for the wrong films in any case, and winning four + a Thalberg clearly puts him in the stratosphere of Oscar winners in the top 8 categories (ahead of Spielberg for example at this point).

Who are you, Queen Victoria? Next you will be speaking in the first person plural.
From Michael Sragow's review of Gran Torino in The Baltimore Sun:
"Gran Torino is far, far from Eastwood's best. But he gets to leave his die-hard fans clapping and crying. For the rest of us, it's so thoroughly mediocre it operates like a potent soporific."
