Upon doing some research on the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, I found out that the statuette is not actually awarded to the film's director, but the country that officially submitted the film. This led me to wonder where the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film are? Who has them?

For instance, I know that the Oscar won by The Barbarian Invasions in 2004 was until recently on display in a Quebec museum. Does anyone know where it is now? Does anyone know if Pedro Almodovar, Ang Lee or Roberto Benigni actually possess the Foreign Language Oscars for their films that received the honor?

Thanks to anyone who can help provide this information.

It is accepted by the director. I don't know the specific rules - it might be that each country gets to determine the actual ownership. The common practice though is for the winning to director to have possession of the statuette.

Apart from the horrible selection process (with countries submitting one each whether they are Bhutan or France), I imagine they don't change this officially because producers and writers would object to the precedent of a director receiving the Oscar in any best film category.

Every year, when the Academy runs its annual ad for the nominees luncheon in Daily Variety, they list all the invited guests. Included are the names of all the nominees, and then the five countries right in the middle alphabetically, as though they were people.

The Oscar Statue goes to the countries submitting board, ie BAFTA (UK), Spanish Film Academy (Spain), it us up to them what actually happens to the statue.
