I had no idea she won both Best and Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes for Gorillas In The Mist and Working Girl. I also had no idea there was a 3 way tie for Best Actress that year. Was this a first for the Globes?

I think part of this answer belongs under Golden Globes...
Yes, that was the only 3 way tie in Globes History.
Weaver and Foster were at the Ceremony while Shirley Maclaine was not.
The most interesting part (aside for Ms. Weaver taking home two globes in Film Categories, which is rare. A combination of film and tv wins has happened several times.)
Is that Maclaine was not Oscar nominated for her work is Madame Sousatzka and that is the only time this has happened for a Best Actress Drama Winner at the Globes.

It still really really ticks me off that Sigourney lost both categories at the Oscar this year. I mean people have speculated a lot that Jessica Lange won for Tootsie because she was not going to win for Frances in 1982.
Well, why wasnt Sigourney given that same treatment? I thought her 1-2 1988 punch of Gorillas and Working Girl were better than Lange's 1982 combo. She def should have won for Working Girl and I liked her better than Jodie Foster in The Accused as well (but then again I also loved Close, Streep, and even Griffith better too!).
1988 was such a great year for actresses and its such a shame who they ended up rewarding with the Oscar.
FYC Emmy- Best Drama- Damages, Lost Best Comedy- 30 Rock Ladies- Glenn Close,Kyra Sedgwick, Chandra Wilson, Rachel Griffiths, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Carrie Fisher, Ellen Burstyn, Anjelica Huston, Phylicia Rashad, Eileen Atkins Guys- Alec Baldwin, Lee Pace, Hugh Laurie, Željko Ivanek, Will Arnett

Sadly, Sigourney was the first person nominated in both acting categories, to not walk away with an award. Every time this had happened before the double nominee had won the supporting award. I thought it was a real shocker, but it really didn't seem to get mentioned that much afterwards.

Jodie Foster was brillant in The Accused and was a worthy winner. Now with that being said I agree with you on Weaver's work in Gorilla's in the Mist. Loved her in that and she too would have been a deserving winner but please don't bad mouth Foster's win at the expense of Weaver.
BTW, 2 things: I didn't think Weaver was Oscar worthy for Working Girl but then I hated The Accidental Tourist so I probably would have been OK with a win in supporting just like Lange winning for Tootsie in 82. I also think Foster had no business winning for Silence of the Lambs in 91. I love Jodie Foster but IMO that was an overrated performance.

No only should she have won in 1988 (my pick would have been for Working Girl) but she should have been nominated for the following:
Death and the Maiden Copycat The Ice Storm A Map of the World
Unfortunately, if she wasn't nominated for these stellar performances, she probably won't be nominated again in the future.
I agree. She definitley should have been nominated for all those performances. And let's not forget her first feature film "Alien". She really sold the fear in that movie and should have gotten nominated,IMO!
Weaver was embarrassed she said afterwards, since she was the favorite for supporting actress and her parents came with her.
I think she vote split that year, when Lange won in 1982 for Tootie, Meryl Streep had best actress locked.
The race for Best Actress this year was considered between Glenn Close on Nomination number 5 for DL and Foster the come back in a role the studio did not want to cast her in.
Weaver was in the running for Best Actress as well since there was talk of Close and Foster vote splitting opening it up for her.
Looking Back WEAVER should have won for ALIENS hands down, the movie has become a classic.
But, since she didn't I don't know how she didn't get nominated for ICE STORM and win?

I remember her being interviewed on Entertainment tonight during the Oscars coverage and I was so embarrassed and bummed out for her too. I still shake my head til this day why she couldn't have won one of those Oscars, especially coming off the unprecendented high from the Golden Globes.
I hope she's recognized in the future too... but you know how Hollywood is with actresses over 50.

She was my choice over any nominee or winner those years.
I loved her in 'Gorillas' and thought she was a bit overrated in 'Working Girl'. She is highly underrated in 'The TV Set', 'Death and the Maiden' ' Tadpole' and 'A Map of the World'. All four could/should have been noms for her. Well, maybe not 'Tadpole' but I loved her in that!
She is a great actress and should be called an Oscar winner by now.

I agree."Aliens" was one of her best performances and it's ashame she didnt win that year. She also should have been nominated for "Alien" because she was terrific in that too!
Ripley, in the "Alien" series, is one of the iconic roles, and scores high on things like AFI's "Best Film Heroes". Weaver should have won an Oscar for that role.

I think she was brilliant in Working Girl. She was funny, biting, delusional and yet kept the character of Katherine Parker real somehow.
Honestly, I kept thinking of this performance when I saw "The Devil Wears Prada". To me, Streep's performance was flat and uninteresting. I think if she infused a little Katherine Parker in the role it would have been much more entertaining. I would have loved to have seen what Weaver could have done with the role in "Devil Wears Prada".
Also, while Streep did have the Best Actress race locked up in 1982, Jessica Lange would have been a very close second. In any other year, her performance in Frances would have won Best Actress. And it was such an feat for her to have both Frances and Tootsie in the same year. She was the comeback kid and she wasn't going home empty handed. I don't think people felt the same way about Weaver.
