Bright Star still doesn't have a US distributor.
It might be that no one has come up with the money, but if it seemed to be a viable Oscar contender, someone likely would have swooped it up by now.

We are already at the time of the year when the top NY and LA theatres - the ones that Oscar contending films want to play at during the holidays - are getting booked up and committed. So unless a distributor buys it, opens it to qualify for seven days, then withdraws it (which used to be done, but now very rare in at least in cases where nominations result), it looks like it might not even open this year.

If someone knows that it has a distributor, I stand corrected, but I haven't heard of it yet.

Johnny Depp, in "The Rum Diary"
***Stephen Dorff, in "Somewhere"
Colin Farrell, in "London Boulevard" or "The Way Back" (I'm betting on the former)
Ian Holm, in "This Side of the Looking Glass"
Alt: Benicio Del Toro, in "Silence"

BEST ACTRESS:
Hiam Abbass, in "Miral"
Elizabeth Banks, in "The Details"
Nicole Kidman, in "Rabbit Hole" or "The Rivals" (my money's on the former, the latter doesn't have a proper IMDb page yet)
Carey Mulligan, in "Never Let Me Go"
***Tilda Swinton, in "We Need to Talk about Kevin"
Alt: Alice Braga, in "Eleven Minutes"

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Gael Garcia Bernal, in "Silence"
Andrew Garfield, in "Never Let Me Go"
Ciaran Hinds, in "The Debt"
***Giovanni Ribisi, in "The Rum Diary"
Mark Strong, in "The Way Back"
Alt: Naveen Andrews, in "This Side of the Looking Glass"

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Elle Fanning, in "Somewhere"
Amber Heard, in "The Rum Diary"
Keira Knightley, in "Never Let Me Go" (she has a ton of good lead prospects this year, too)
***Kristin Scott Thomas, in "Nowhere Boy"
Dianne Wiest, in "Rabbit Hole"
Alt: Lucy Punch, in "Untitled Woody Allen Project"

Suddenly Steven Dorff is going to be a somebody again... (if he ever was one in the first place)? I don't think so. I don't think so at all.

Sofia Coppola is a good directress, and she's shown great skill with some unconventional casting before (Murray, Dunst etc). This could be Dorff's Mickey Rourke-style comeback.

I actually think that Stephen Dorff is a very good actor, or at least he was when he was young and before he started hamming it up every performance. He blew me away in his small role in the Mia Farrow film "Reckless" (a flawed but interesting film and one that was unjustly overlooked).

I look at his career as similar to Vincent Gallo's - both are incredibly talented people that got carried away by their own hubris and their inability to keep their mouths shut.

Could the current events in Iran help Shohreh Aghdashloo jump start a campaign for "The Stoning of Soraya M."?

I would say that especially with the recent Iran conflicts, Aghdashloo is in the running, and I know she was being talked about last year. But the only problem - it's being released by a distributor named Mpower Pictures - never heard of it?, to give you an idea of another film they have recently released - An American Carol... So yeah, not so sure she's gonna have that strong backing from such a small distributor say Richard Jenkins got from Overture...

I think now that there are ten nominees in Best Picture that maybe Avatar should start being in some predictions no? Its supposed to be breaktaking visually, and from what I've read so far pretty amazing all around. I'm sort of hoping that Avatar is huge and great with critics because it would be great to see Sigourney Weaver possibly nominated again.

Oh don't worry, I was thinking that too. To me, it was between Avatar and Bright Star, which does have a distributor by the way. I have no doubts that at some point Avatar will show up in my list, but for now with this movie being so secretive, I left it out. The other film that I was on the rocks about was Where The Wild Things Are, which actually looks amazing and visually stunning. I'm actually kinda hoping that Spike Jonze can somehow pull off a Best Director nom, but that's just me dreaming at this early in the race... But I chose Bright Star over those films, Avatar especially, pretty much based on what pacinofan said earlier. I really didn't want to add this film in, I was hesistant despite it's success at Cannes, but pacinofan pretty much convinced me...

Spike Jonze is the perfect director for Where the Wild Things Are... he is so amazingly imaginative, I'm shocked he's not a household name yet. The anamotronics are exquisite, and are certain to be mind-blowing.

Avatar fans, here's a sneak peek article: http://screenrant.com/avatar-f...rly-buzz-ross-14583/

I'm still holding back on Bright Star.

Like I said, I'm holding back on Bright Star, what with the lack of distributor and all that good stuff. Don't know a thing about 500 Days of Summer.

On the other hand, I wouldn't disregard The Informant so quickly. Early screenings make it sound like a Damon Best Actor vehicle, and a return to form for Soderbergh. Were it not for my wishful thinking with Pete Docter of Pixar being nominated for Best Director, that fifth slot would have gone to Mr. Traffic himself.

1. Bright Star, as I said above, actually does have a distributor. It was bought by Pathe International. Warner Bros. will be handling the distribution in the UK while Bob Berney and William Pohlad’s new still unnamed company will be handling the distribution here in the US.

2. (500) Days of Summer has been called this year's Fox Searchlight "Oscar gem!" Summer has been going from festival-to-festival charming audiences. In fact, it was one of the major hits at this year's Sundance Film Festival along with Precious and An Education. With 10 nominees now, I really think Fox Searchlight will once again be able to push this wonderful indie gem into the Best Picture slot. This is definitely one film to look out for!

3. Going back to Bright Star, I really want to hold back on it and put in Avatar or Where the Wild Things Are in instead, but I just feel like too many people are predicting it and there is much more buzz for this film than those. To me, it's just seems like another one of those literary period pieces that will put you to sleep, but it does have Jane Champion in charge, and I read an article how this film, even though it's a period piece, feels like it's a modern film, and they really applauded Champion for being able to pull that off... They also mentioned though how this film is like Twilight, but in a good way, and should attract that audience. Ok...

4. Personally, I'm excited for Avatar, but I'm even more excited for Cameron's comeback. All I can say is, I think we know who's winning Best Visual Effects this year... roflmao

5. I'm not so sure I fully agree with you on The Informant though. It just seems more like a film that will get nods only for their actors - Matt Damon and even Melanie Lynskey (someone who I think has deserved a nomination for a while...). But I guess Soderbergh is slowly climbing back on to his game... The Girlfriend Experience I guess helped!

I *love* corporate thrillers (lol!) so I'm quite excited for "The Informant". It'll be interesting to see Joel McHale in a dramatic supporting role, at the very least!

Although bocaboy, Michael Clayton did end up with a kind-of-surprising Best Picture nod, so you never know with this kind of film.

Although, on paper, Matt Damon's role in "Green Zone" looks more interesting, although I'm excited for all three of his performances this year - he's a criminally underrated actor.

I'll put it as my sixth Original Screenplay nomination, just because the dialogue seems so quirky. I like the segment of the trailer when they are discussing nicknames, and Zoey Duschanel says "They called me Anal Girl." His reaction is a typical guy's reaction, and then when she explains, "I was very organized," the joke pays off twice.

I'm holding back on predicting Avatar for anything major yet. It could go so many ways right now. I'd be more leniant towards the fantasy-driven Wild Things Are.

I don't know about that, sir. Just look at that little '99 film called The Insider. Same scenario, but it ended up (for better or worse) in several of the top categories.

And puxzkkx, I'm with you there. Matt Damon has three fantastic roles (still know very little about Green Zone) this year; I think he's a double nominee this year, for Informant (lead) and Invictus (supporting). Least that's how I see it now, with no trailers to go off of.

I'm gonna do the 1,2,3,4...'s again. Cool

1. roflmaoroflmao

2. That was a great part! Loved that in the trailer! There are some random clips on different websites, and seriously, they are even more fun to watch than the trailer! Check out the clips for the IKEA Trip scene and the Expectations vs. Reality scene! The film seems so creative and fun! No wonder why this film has been captivating audiences at all the festivals!

3. I agree with Avatar going so many ways right now too. I really would like to stick in Wild Things in over Bright Star, but again, I mentioned my reasons for keeping Bright Star in above...

4. Well considering Avatar is being considered "groundbreaking" for the way that it's being shot and made, I'm pretty sure that says it all. Star Trek will most likely be a nominee too, probably along with either Transformers and/or The Road.

5. How about this, I'll wait and see with The Informant! It does seem interesting, I just want to wait until we see a trailer...

5 1/2. It's not even known yet if Green Zone is even going to be released this year or next year... If they do hold it off, a la The Road, it would be (I think) mainly because of Damon's other roles, this way there's no confliction. I'm sure there would be many other reasons, but I'm pretty sure the studios want to avoid any vote-splitting at possible!
