Also, the reality is with 10 nominees and the preferential voting, there is so much a wider range of possibilities unless one film (like Slumdog last year) clearly breaks through as the favorite. It could be the film that gets the most top 3 votes rather than most first choice votes wins.
Owen Gleiberman also loved it. Even reviews that liked it rather than loved it described it as a strong Oscar contender.

Well it's certainly linear and easy to follow so for the doddery old buggers that vote, they'll certainly get it and be entertained (unlike say Police, Adjective). And it will certainly resonate with those who work given the layoff theme. And it's quite funny thanks to the 3 leads. And Vera Farmiga is great, Kendricks is amusing & touching and George is his smooth old self.
But it's a lot about George flying from one location to the next with a focus on the three leads all of whom are somewhat chilly characters - George & Vera would appear to have commitment phobia and Kendricks is one of those serious career type younguns that wants to rule the world, so the thing doesn't exactly exude warmth nor does it have an epic feel like most of the past best picture winners.

UMM, how to put this gently? Hell will freeze over before a picture like this wins best picture.

Several prominent New York critics say it is a great film. It may be the film that is most likely to challenge "The Hurt Locker" for best picture from at least the NY Critics, if not more groups. If it were not for your knee-jerk biases you would realize how silly you are being saying such a thing.

Just agreeing with Ms Ethel, darling, who put it much more nicely than me. Did I miss your reaming her out too?

She saw it and thought it was good but not great. She does not want it to win best picture based on her viewing. That is not the same as saying it has no chance of winning best picture which is what you said.

Of course Up in the Air has a chance of winning best picture. To deny it is ridiculous.
The favorite? No, there is no favorite at the moment.
Potentially well positioned? It seems to be, particularly if it is universally liked and gets in most voters top 3.
(Pacinofan - it's already September 30 in NZ, so Pux, though still a bit premature, is a bit less so than you indicate. I did notice though that for whatever reasons he did want to rush into a new one).
