Coldplay didn't win ROTY this year because NARAS was hellbent on honoring Allison Krauss and Robert Plant. Plus, Coldplay recently won ROTY.
Regardless, "Please Read the Letter" is still a pop/rock song, albeit a more folksy one.
So my point is still valid...NARAS voters prefer awarding pop/rock songs in ROTY. R&B and rap songs NEVER win ROTY and country only wins every blue moon.
With that said, if the BEPs are nominated for ROTY and SOTY for "I Gotta Feeling" then they may be able to win ROTY especially if "Use Somebody" isn't nominated. I got a feeling (pun intended) that "Boom Boom Pow" would be an also ran if nominated for ROTY just because the song is more urban. Sad but oh so true.
But right now I'm betting on Kings of Leon until further notice.

I think DoubleD & I are both taking risks by not predicting U2 for AOTY or ROTY. U2 is the musical guest for the season premiere of SNL. That could be a HUGE reminder to Grammy voters and change everything.

I'll go with DoubleD on this one. Though, I expect some oddball choices in this category. I don't think Kings Of Leon are the frontrunners for ROTY/SOTY. I'm thinking a veteran act or an obscure track will win the award.
"Hometown Glory" by Adele feels more like a SOTY nominee. She'll probably pull a Corinne Bailey Rae.
I prefer DoubleD's predictions. I like the prediction of "Blame It"...sounds like something completely random that the Grammys would do. I find it suprising that neither one of you are predicting Kanye West's "Heartless." It was one of the biggest songs of the year (although old news now). Plus it spawned not one, but two high profile covers: Kris Allen from American Idol and The Fray. What are your thoughts on this song and its chances? Do you think it might just appear in SOTY or not there either?
For Your Grammy Consideration: Kanye West for "Heartless" and 808's & Heartbreak Adele for "Hometown Glory" Taylor Swift for "You Belong With Me" & Fearless Maxwell for "Pretty Wings" & BLACKsummer'snight Kings of Leon for "Use Somebody" The Cast of GLEE for "Don't Stop Believin' " Mariah Carey for "Obsessed"
Does anyone know if "Single Ladies" is eligible? That's been tugging at me all year. If it is eligible I say it gets into ROTY with "Halo" getting a SOTY nomination.
"Heartless" is my personal favorite song of 2009. I almost predicted it for ROTY. I did not predict it because I remembered "Stronger" failed to receive a ROTY nomination as expected a few years ago.

I think that was because "Stronger" was never submitted for consideration on the ROTY entry list. If I recall, "Good Life" was submitted instead. Apparently West's team wanted to reduce chances of getting in ROTY so that they could maximize the chances a nod and a win for AOTY. I am fairly certain that had "Stronger" been submitted for ROTY, it would have been nominated.
Therefore, if "Heartless" is submitted (and this we'll have to see), I reckon chances are good for ROTY and SOTY nods.

doubled had Use somebody but no 21 guns in their top 5...
i'll go with gucci's choice here.
for me this is the most interesting and difficult category in predicting the nominees. but when official nominees are already out, this is the easiest category in predicting the winner.

Random question: I can't remember if I've ever heard this or not, but does anyone know if the Blue Ribbon panel gets to see the genre nominations before determining the nominations in the General Field?
Sidenote: Apparently U2 is campaigning HARD for some Grammy love. 1st they had those obnoxious BlackBerry ads that just basically featured a whole minute of U2 playing their latest single followed by the words: BlackBerry <3's U2. Now, they've booked the premiere episode of SNL at the end of September. What's next? I really hope this doesn't effect voters decisions, b/c I would not include U2 in the general field this time around.

I've been thinking this for a long time now, and I've thought about it the other day. I'm starting to think the General Field nominees are determined by the genre categories, at least some of them...

It would make a lot of sense if true. Like if they see someone is omitted in the genre categories that they felt had a breakthrough year, they might nominate an artist in the General Field despite no other nominations elsewhere (a la Corrine Bailey Rae or Taylor Swift). Or perhaps, they see a new name pop up in the genre categories and get the idea to give them general field love based on those nominations in the genre categories (like with Adele, Ledisi, Herbie Han****, Vince Gill, and many many more).
I mean, if they get a list of Top 20 contenders for the 4 categories in the General Field, why wouldn't they be allowed access to see the final votes for the genre categories, especially if they are suppose to be representing the best of the best with these 4 major categories???
