The new Shakira single: it's literally very good Story filed Tuesday, 16 June 2009 A lady from Shakira 's record label came to play us the big comeback single 'She Wolf' earlier this morning, then she left the building with the CD.
Fortunately we had secretly wired up our office with hundreds of high quality microphones, allowing us to bootleg the song - an MP3 of which we will put online later.
In the meantime, make do with the news that...
» It doesn't sound like anything Shakira has done before - it's a bit dancey and a bit electronic with a quite organic disco feel - but even as an instrumental there would still be a feeling that this is very much a Shakira-sounding track. We know a lot of people (including Shakira) are very protective of Shakira's sonic identity and we think they'll be satisfied that she's gone in a slightly new direction wiht this while keeping herself right in the centre of the mix. From this jumping off point the rest of the album could go in any direction - it's quite exciting.
» To underscore the 'a bit dancey' claim above: everyone report to the dancefloor, it's 125 beats per minute.
» The chorus goes "there's a she wolf in the closet, open up and set it free (howling noise), there's a she wolf in the closet, let it out so it can breathe". To be absolutely clear on this, Shakira does indeed make a wolf noise. (Amazing.)
» As opening lines about werewolfism go, "a domesticated girl, that's all you ask of me - darling it is no joke, this is lycanthropy" is up there with the best. Definitely in the Top 20.
» The bridge has a slight feel of a song we won't name because if we do it might be interpreted as some sort of statement that 'She Wolf' sounds like the song in question, which it doesn't. But it does sound a bit like the song we are thinking of. It also has a great lyric: "I've been devoting myself to you Monday to Monday and Friday to Friday, not getting enough retribution reducing incentive to keep me at it."
» Best line: "LIKE A COFFEE MACHINE IN AN OFFICE".
» There's a sort of harmonised vocodered filtery "there's a she wolf in disguise, coming out, coming out, coming out" bit at the beginning; there are some brilliant Boney M 'Rasputin'-style strings near the end.
» Structurally the song's intro / vocoderybit / verse / bridge / chorus / postchorus / verse / bridge / chorus / vocoderybit / Boney M-style strings bit / tiny bit of chorus / sudden end.
» ONLY MAJOR FLAW: There isn't a bit where she goes 'Beyonce Beyonce' and then Beyonce comes and goes 'Shakira Shakira'. Gratuitous retreading of former glories fail.
» In summary: it's a new sound for Shakira but only Shakira could make a song like this and get away with it. Singers and songs often revolve in different spheres - sometimes seemingly reliant on whose A&R team is quickest to answer Ryan Tedder's emails - but 'She Wolf' represents a brilliantly tight bond between art and artist. It's fun and deranged, too, like pop music at its best sometimes needs to be.
In other news:
» Shakira has, apparently, gone 'platinum blonde' for this release.
We were joking about the bootlegging-it-and-putting-it-online business by the way. That would be ridiculous - and illegal.
The world premiere of Shakira's new single won't take place today. Apparently this radio station has fooled us all around, because it previewed an exclusive new single premiere and this station is the second most popular Spanish station in Los Angeles, so what was promised by such a station could hardly been rejected. I personally apologize for all this misinterpretation because I don't want to pass all the accusation to this radio station, even if it totally fooled us around. I want to assure everyone that nothing will be posted again on the official forum if not first certified (approved). The radio station will be reported.

Is not a coincidence that Shakira and Nelly Furtado will release their singles just the last week of the 2008-2009 Latin Grammy period (July 1 of 2008 - June 30 2009)

Both are waiting for a nomination !!
Hells Yeah! XD
For Your Grammy Consideration: Not Whitney Houston
Just a couple of hours to hear "Loba", the spanish version of "She Wolf"
but I heard that the release in English was postponed to July 13, confirming the theory of ojodiamante about that "Loba" will be launched this week only to get a space into the latin grammy nominations
WOW, THE SONG IS Amazing, clever lyrics and great sound, this remind me a lot to "Timor" a dance oriented song in the Oral Fixation 2 , Shakira was trying to get into this sounds with that song and "Pure Intuition", now with "Loba" is gonna hit worldwide, I´m very happy about this song and not another "Hips dont lie-Ojos Asi-Wherever Whenever". The summer is finally be interesting with the new releases.
I know what you guys mean about Shakira's English records being a little "off"..I love them because I'm a big fan, but I know she can do better, and I really hope this new English album turns out to be amazing

Shakira's new single doesn't go on iTunes until July 14th, while Nelly's became available today..Do the rules include radio release dates? Because only then would Shakira be eligible for this year's Latin Grammys

The beat is great, I love how she mixes two complete different elements, nature and technology for this, in the beat with classical instruments and the computer generated sounds. The lyrics are great, she's more sexy in here. Reminds me of how she used to sing "CiegaSordaMuda" with the beat like that of of "Las De La Intuicion" but a whole bunch of levels higher. And It seems like she's going back with her "Laundry Service" image, she looked the best there!
I love it!!! She didn't dissapoint.

As usual I hated the song first because I thought it was too cheesy and then somebody gave me the lyrics, heard it, read it and now it's just a guilty pleasure.
Musically I think the song is excellent, and it's a new direction from Shakira. The lyrics are silly but that's where the true "classic Shakira" part of the song is, that's her typical songwriting and like A_Mb88 says it's exactly like CigaSordoMuda, it's that type of songwriting which is nice since she hasn't done it in ages.
A lot of people must have forgotten that she writes like this because seriously, it's been a while. Fijacion Oral and Laundry Service did not have a song like this, so it's nice to see her go back to the Ladrones days...
There's of course no denying this will be another huge hit for her.
This song reminds me of ciega sorda muda in that its totally fun to hear and once you understand the lyrics they are pretty clever. i am praying that the rest of the songs in the new albums are similar to this or similar to the old shakira like the songs from donde estan los ladrones.
