I was thinking about the heyday of dance/house music in the early '90s and I know it's a singles-driven genre but I'd love to find some good dance albums from 1989 to, say, 1994. Some ones I thought of already:

Janet Jackson, Rhythm Nation (1989)
Madonna, Erotica (1992)
Deee-Lite, World Clique (1990)
Crystal Waters, Storyteller (1994)
Soul II Soul, Club Classics Vol. 1 (1989)
Enigma, MCMXC A.D. (1990)
Betty Boo, Boomania (1990)
Bjork, Debut (1993)
Kylie Minogue, Kylie Minogue (1994)

Cathy Dennis is also a good example but I don't think she ever put out a good ALBUM, just great singles.

Can anyone recommend any others? Even obscure, lesser known ones?

Well I think you listed them all. I honestly can't think of anymore that you didn't mention.

I've only lately jumped onto the Dance/Electronica bandwagon so I have no historical depth. From what I've heard though, I like Daft Punk, Justice, LCD Soundsystem. In terms of single artists, Kylie Minogue's Fever would be my highest ranking album of a dance nature in terms my favorites.

Agreed. I was kind of hoping it was more modern dance albums. I really don't know much music at all from back then.

HerMadgesty, you'd consider that Bjork album dance? I guess it is her more dancable, but I dunno if I'd categorize it there.

It should have won the Grammy for Dance Album this year. So unfortunate.

No man, "Robyn" should have won album of the year.

No lie.

Almost a year after I started listening to it, it's just as good. Great great great.

Surely there have to be some great dance albums from the 1989-1994 era.

I'm not into dance so I don't know, but there has to be some.

Another late 80s CD that I think qualifies is "Actually" by the Pet Shop Boys. Plenty of good material on that one.

As for the early 90s, "The White Room" by The KLF is decent. The iTunes + version of the disc has their great duet with Tammy Wynette which is perhaps the most unusual pairing in the history of modern music.

ETA: Here's the video for that great duet with Tammy.

^ Oh, The KLF is a good one. That's a great album, even though "Justified and Ancient" (my favorite "from" that album) isn't actually on the album (which is frequently the case with dance albums where the singled get remixed).

And yeah Bildo, Debut is totally a dance album! Half the songs are house tracks: "Crying," "There's More to Life Than This," "Big Time Sensuality," "Violently Happy." And Nellee Hooper is a dance producer. Even Post and Homogenic are dance albums.

It's tough to find a good album as there were so many one hit wonders or artists who would produce one good song amongst an album of crack. Here are some classics from the early 90s.

Technotronic - "Pump Up the Jam"

Snap! - "Rhythm Is a Dancer" from "The Madman's Return" This song is actually amazing in that it is always remixed and released anew every 3-5 years. It has more lives than a cat.

Real McCoy - "Run Away" from the CD "Real McCoy"

Stereo MC's - "Connected" from the CD "Connected"

Utah Saints - "Something Good"

Finally, while not a 90s tune and from an album that is more R&B than dance, this 80s classic should not be forgotten: Neneh Cherry - "Buffalo Stance" from the CD "Raw Like Sushi"

Another great CD from 1990 is "Violator" from Depeche Mode. Yeah, I know this probably more accurately classified as alternative instead of dance; but this was a very dance friendly CD given "Personal Jesus" and one of my all-time favorites, "Policy of Truth" which I think hit #1 or #2 on the dance club chart.
