Since the robyn thread caught on so well, I want to (maybe) introduce you guys to a new artist: Santogold. She makes hip hop/reggae/punk/new wave...well I guess it's uncategorizable. She reminds me (and most of the press, it seems) of MIA, but she's definitly her own lady.

Fighting, check this chick out.

Here's her video for "LES Artistes". It's awesome

And here's her myspace

Her album drops in the US on Tuesday. I'll be picking up her and Madonna.

Thoughts, anyone?

Cool.

That link you posted reminds me of Gwen Stefani if anyone, but I clicked on some of the other stuff on YouTube by her. Yeah, I can definitely see the M.I.A. comparisons in songs like "Find A Way" and "The Creator." The latter I SWORE was M.I.A. when she started singing lol. Check out a song called "Shuv It." It's really chill, kinda in the same tempo of "Paper Planes."

I don't know what this genre of music is called, this one that M.I.A. created/popularized, but it's pretty sick. I guess Santogold is a product of it.

Cool stuff. Thanks bildo10.

I am really feeling Santogold's cd! A pleasant surprise. Definetely gives me a No Doubt/Gwen Stefani/Reggae vibe.

It's good. she jumps all over the place, literally hitting about 9 genres of music, sometimes 2 or 3 per song. Dancehall, reggae, pop, nu wave, rap, punk, it's all over the place--and in a totally good way.

I think she is going to be bigger than MIA. The album is nowhere near as good as MIA's two, but it's much more accesible. some of the songs remind me of Gwen Stefani (which I know you said too Fighting).

Anyways, its definitly B+/A- material.

Not crazy about this one. More hype than anything else.

I listened to the album today. I'm not too enthusiastic about the material. She's got the M.I.A. sound, but M.I.A. just took it to us. Her material just doesn't compare next to genius.

I'd give the album a B-ish grade though. Some good songs.

Starbright, it's streaming for free at www.aolmusic.com. Get at it quickly! It usually only stays up for one week.
