Chart Alert update:

Fans Snap Up 1.1 Million Jackson Albums In One Week
July 15, 2009

Michael Jackson continues to rule the chart this week as his overall catalog of solo albums moved 1.1 million copies last week (up a whopping 37% compared with the previous week) . . . He also claims the top-selling album in the United States for a third week in a row with "Number Ones" (349,000; up 3%) . . . Big bows also greet new albums from Maxwell and rock band All Time Low while the latest "Hannah Montana" TV soundtrack starts strong . . . In Progress Reports we've got updates on Lady GaGa and Britney Spears on the Mainstream Top 40 radio airplay chart, Kings of Leon's latest top 10 single and the Jonas Brothers' unlikely dance hit.

FLASH POINTS

• Michael Jackson's catalog of solo albums sold a mighty 1.1 million copies in the United States in the tracking week that ended at the close of business Sunday (July 12). That's a jump of 37% stacked next to the previous week, when his combined albums sold nearly 800,000. In just the past two-and-a-half weeks, American consumers have purchased more than 2.3 million Jackson albums.

• Record label sources suggest that Jackson's album sales were particularly strong last week because of publicity surrounding his July 7 memorial service. Additionally, a wider selection of his albums were restocked by key retailers, in addition to integral hits compilations like "Number Ones" and "The Essential Michael Jackson" and of course, "Thriller."

• "Number Ones" is the top-selling album in the United States for the third straight week, with 349,000 copies sold (an increase of 3%). "Thriller" moved 264,000 (up 41%) while "Essential" powered through another 149,000 (up 18%). Some older Jackson titles also made great gains, likely owed to the one-two punch of restocking by brick-and-mortar retailers and the publicity generated by the memorial service. "Off the Wall" sold 107,000 (up 108%), "Bad" did 97,000 (up 332%), and "Dangerous" blew through 67,000 (up 157%).

• In turn, Jackson is still the King of the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. It tallies albums that are more than 18 months old, have fallen below No. 100 on the Billboard 200 and don't have a current radio single. Catalog albums are ineligible to appear on the Billboard 200 though they can chart on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart. This week, the entire top 12 albums on the Catalog tally are all Jackson-related. The singer specifically has the titles at Nos. 1-6 and 9-12, while two Jackson 5 compilations hold down the fort at Nos. 7 and 8.

• On the Billboard 200, Maxwell makes big news, entering at No. 1 with "BLACKsummers'night" and a career-high sales week of 316,000. It's his second chart-topper. The singer's last set, 2001's "Now," also opened at No. 1 with a then-best 296,000 copies sold.

• The "Hannah Montana" parade on the Billboard 200 continues as the TV soundtrack "Hannah Montana 3" bows at No. 2 with 137,000. Earlier this year, the "Hannah Montana: The Movie" film soundtrack started at No. 2 with 139,000. The first two "Hannah" TV soundtracks both reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 back in 2006 and 2007, respectively.

• Rock band All Time Low has its all-time high week as "Nothing Personal" enters at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 63,000. It's the group's best sales week and highest-charting album. The Hopeless Records' band took its last album, "So Wrong, It's Right," to No. 62 back in 2007.

• And finally, here's a recap of the rest of the top 10 albums on the Billboard 200. The "Now 31" compilation slips two spots to No. 3 with 101,000 (down 41%) while the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." holds on at No. 5 with 63,000 (down 10%). Brad Paisley's "American Saturday Night" falls four positions to No. 6 with 44,000 (down 66% in its second week) while Rob Thomas' "Cradlesong" also falls four rungs to No. 7 with 41,000 (down 66% in its sophomore frame). Taylor Swift's "Fearless" climbs three slots to No. 8 with 36,000 (up 1%), Eminem's "Relapse" stands still at No. 9 with 34,000 (down 12%), and Jonas Brothers' "Lines, Vines and Trying Times" slips two spots to No. 10 with 34,000 (down 19%).

• Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending July 12) totaled 7.3 million units, up 4.5% compared with the sum last week (7 million) and down 0.8% compared with the same sales week of 2008 (7.3 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 188.7 million, down 14% compared with the same total at this point last year (219.5 million).

MARKET WATCH

• Album units, current chart week: 7.3 million units
• UP 4.5% from last week's charts: 7 million units
• DOWN 0.75% from same week, 2008: 7.3 million units
• This week: The top three albums on the Billboard 200 sell more than 100,000 copies. The top seven albums on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart sell more than 100,000.
• This week last year on the Billboard 200: Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" held at No. 1 with 125,000 (down 20%) while the chart's top debut was Beck's "Modern Guilt" at No. 4 (84,000).

PROGRESS REPORTS

• Lady GaGa becomes just the third artist in the 16-year history of the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart to collect three No. 1 singles from a debut album. "LoveGame" rises 2-1 on the tally, marking the singer's third No. 1 following "Just Dance" (two weeks at the top) and "Poker Face" (five weeks). The three songs appear on her top five Billboard 200 album, "The Fame" . . . GaGa joins just two prior acts in accomplishing the triumphant triple play. In 1993-94, Ace of Base reigned consecutively with thee cuts from its debut set, "The Sign": "All That She Wants," the title cut (a record 14 weeks at No. 1) and "Don't Turn Around" . . . In 2002-03, Avril Lavigne repeated the feat with a trio of tracks from her debut set, "Let Go"—"Complicated" (eight weeks), "Sk8er Boi" (one week) and "I'm With You" (four weeks).

• Britney Spears debuts on the Mainstream Top 40 radio chart this week with "Radar"—the fourth single from her "Circus" album—entering at No. 35. Spears now reigns as the artist with the most Mainstream Top 40 chart hits since 2000—with 21—breaking out of a tie she was in with Nelly. All told, Spears has collected 23 Mainstream Top 40 hits. (Two of those charted pre-2000.)

• Jonas Brothers find themselves on a rather unlikely chart—the Hot Dance Club Songs tally. "Paranoid," courtesy of uptempo remixes from the likes of Soul Seekerz and Dave Aude, debuts at No. 48 on the tally. It's the JoBros. first Dance Club chart hit.

• Over on the Alternative radio airplay chart, Kings of Leon net their third top 10 single as "Notion" rises 12-10. All three of the band's top 10 hits happen to be from its current album, "Only By the Night," which holds at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 with 30,000 (down less than 1%).

A LOOK AHEAD

• Among the albums released this week, due on next week's charts: Daughtry's "Leave This Town," the Dead Weather's "Horehound," Joe's "Signature" and Celtic Thunder's "Take Me Home."

• Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2008 when: Nas' self-titled effort bowed at No. 1 with 187,000 while Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" fell to the No. 2 slot with 105,000 (down 15% in its sixth week).

Within two weeks, Maxwell has sold close to 420K. It should be easy for him to hit 500K next week.

Daughtry Returns, Nets Second No. 1 Album
July 22, 2009

Editor: Keith Caulfield; Contributors: Raphael George, Gary Trust, Alex Vitoulis; Editorial Director: Silvio Pietroluongo

Daughtry leads the way this week as the band's second album, "Leave This Town," tops the Billboard 200 with 269,000 . . . And, after three weeks where the top-selling set in the United States came from Michael Jackson, the late King of Pop steps aside as Daughtry reigns . . . Jackson's still very much all over the charts, and his best seller last week, "Number Ones," shifted 192,000 . . . We've also got big album debuts from Joe, rock super group the Dead Weather and rapper Twista . . . In Progress Reports, we've got updates on Shakira, Wisin & Yandel, the Black Eyed Peas and Pet Shop Boys.

FLASH POINTS

• After the past three weeks where the top-selling album in the United States was by the late Michael Jackson, this week, the No. 1 album is the sophomore set by Daughtry, "Leave This Town." The title arrives at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and the Top Comprehensive Albums list with 269,000. The latter chart tallies both catalog and current albums, unlike the Billboard 200, which houses only current sets. (Catalog albums are those that are more than 18 months old, have fallen below No. 100 on the Billboard 200 and don't have a current radio single.)

• For Daughtry, "Leave This Town" is the band's second No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Its self-titled freshman set debuted at No. 2 with 304,000 upon its release in November 2006. It went to No. 1 in its ninth week on the list, an incredible feat considering the vast majority of No. 1 albums get to No. 1 by debuting there. That just goes to show how well "Daughtry" was able to sustain its sales momentum after its release. Moreover, after it hit No. 1, it stepped aside for five weeks, and then went back to the penthouse for its second and final week at the top.

• "Daughtry" spent its first 79 consecutive weeks selling more than 15,000 copies per weeks. The album hung out in the top 50 of the Billboard 200 for its first 80 weeks. This week, it's still on the chart for a 139th week. It ranks at No. 65 (7,000; up 46%)—and remains a "current" album eligible to chart on the Billboard 200 because its final single, "What About Now," is still riding high at No. 4 on the Adult Contemporary radio airplay tally.

• The new album's first single, "No Surprise," is the act's sixth straight top five hit on the Adult Top 40 radio airplay chart, where it ranks at No. 5 this week.

• Shifting gears for a moment, Michael Jackson mania isn't over on the charts. He still looms large on the Top Pop Catalog Albums and Top Comprehensive Albums charts. In the tracking week that ended July 19, his "Number Ones" hits collection was his best seller, shifting 192,000 (down 45%). That 2003 effort finds itself at No. 1 on the Catalog chart and No. 2 on Top Comprehensive Albums. All told, Jackson has six of the top 10 spots on Top Comprehensive Albums, and the entire top 12 slots on Top Pop Catalog Albums are Jackson-related. The majority of his releases are down in sales this week, including "The Essential Michael Jackson" (125,000; down 15%), "Thriller" (114,000; down 57%), "Off the Wall" (68,000; down 36%), "Bad" (61,000; down 38%) and "Dangerous" (55,000; down 19%).

• Back on the Billboard 200, rock super group the Dead Weather sees its first album, "Horehound," enter at No. 6 with 51,000. The quartet consists of Jack White (of the White Stripes and the Raconteurs), Alison Mosshart (of the Kills), Dean Fertita (of Queens of the Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence (of the Raconteurs and the Greenhornes) . . . All told, this is the sixth top 10 album for White—he also has three top 10s with the White Stripes and two with the Raconteurs.

• R&B singer Joe claims his fourth top 10 album and second in less than a year as "Signature" arrives at No. 7 with 49,000 copies sold. On the Oct. 11, 2008, Billboard 200, his "Joe Thomas, New Man" entered and peaked at No. 8 with 54,000.

• Rapper Twista places the final top 10 bow on the Billboard 200 this week with his "Category F5" debuting at No. 8 with 45,000—his fourth straight top 10 set. It's his first effort for Capitol Records after having spent nearly all of his major-label career with the Atlantic family.

• And now a recap of the rest of the Billboard 200 top 10 . . . Maxwell's "BLACKsummers'night" falls one slot to No. 2 with 103,000 (down 67%). The "Hannah Montana 3" soundtrack and the "Now 31" compilation also slide down one rung each (to No. 3 with 73,000, down 47%, and to No. 4 with 69,000, down 31%, respectively). The Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." stays steady at No. 5 with 54,000 (down 13%). Taylor Swift's "Fearless" (up one at No. 9—37,000; up 1%) and Kings of Leon's "Only by the Night" (up four to No. 10—33,000; up 9%) round out the top 10.

• Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending July 19) totaled 6.8 million units, down 6.8% compared with the sum last week (7.3 million) and down 9.3% compared with the same sales week of 2008 (7.5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 195.4 million, down 13.9% compared with the same total at this point last year (227 million).

MARKET WATCH

• Album units, current chart week: 6.8 million units
• DOWN 6.8% from last week's charts: 7.3 million units
• DOWN 9.3% from same week, 2008: 7.5 million units
• This week: The top two albums on the Billboard 200 sell more than 100,000 copies. The top five albums on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart sell more than 100,000.
• This week last year on the Billboard 200: Nas' self-titled effort bowed at No. 1 with 187,000 while Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" fell to the No. 2 slot with 105,000 (down 15% in its sixth week).

PROGRESS REPORTS

• Shakira makes a big move on the Hot Latin Songs chart this week as "Loba" climbs 17-6, becoming the diva's 14th top 10 hit. That ties her for the fourth-most top 10 singles among female artists with Selena. Only Gloria Estefan (with 22), Ana Gabriel (20), Rocio Durcal and Ednita Nazario (15) have more . . . Shakira also makes noise on the Mainstream Top 40 radio airplay chart, where "She Wolf" starts at No. 40. On the latter list, it's her seventh hit and first since her "Beautiful Liar" duet with Beyonce peaked at No. 17 April 21, 2007.

• Elsewhere on the Hot Latin Songs chart, Wisin & Yandel notch their fifth No. 1, tying with Mana for the most No. 1s among duos or groups in the tally's nearly 23-year history. Wisin & Yandel hit the top this week with "Abusadora," their fifth topper in little more than three years. Its first came with "Llame Pa' Verte" April 1, 2006.

• The Black Eyed Peas become the third group this decade and the first since 2004 to earn simultaneous top 10 singles on the Rhythmic Top 40 radio airplay chart . . . The quartet's former chart-topper "Boom Boom Pow" rests at No. 7 while its follow-up track, "I Gotta Feeling," motors 12-6 . . . Prior to BEP, OutKast laced together 14 consecutive weeks with double top 10s from November 2003 to February 2004 with "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move." Destiny's Child posted three straight weeks in the top 10 with "Jumpin', Jumpin' " and "Say My Name" from April 2000 to May 2000.

• Pet Shop Boys set the record for the most No. 1s in the history of the Hot Dance Club Songs chart among duos/groups this week as "Love Etc." hits the top slot. It's the veteran act's ninth topper and first since "Break 4 Love" reached No. 1 Nov. 10, 2001. Previously, they were locked in a tie with Depeche Mode for the most No. 1s among duos/groups . . . Through Pet Shop Boys' 20-plus years on the charts, they've notched 33 Club hits. Their first, "West End Girls," debuted March 15, 1986, and nabbed the No. 1 position May 3, 1986 . . . "Love Etc." is the first single from Pet Shop Boys' 10th studio album, "Yes." The latter debuted at No. 32 on the Billboard 200 upon its release earlier this year, giving the act its highest-charting set since 1993's "Very" debuted and peaked at No. 20.

A LOOK AHEAD

• Among the albums released this week, due on next week's charts: Demi Lovato's "Here We Go Again," Jordin Sparks' "Battlefield," Sugar Ray's "Music for Cougars" and Our Lady Peace's "Burn Burn."

• Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2008 when: Miley Cyrus' "Breakout" bowed at No. 1 with 371,000 while Sugarland's "Love on the Inside" started in the runner-up spot with 314,000.

Man, I couldn't even get into the Our Lady Peace album. Hopefully it was just a bad day for me.

The Jordin album is alright. Nice pop music - a couple of standout tracks whose names escape me at the moment. I love "Battlefield" and it was cool to see a dance to it last night on So You Think You Can Dance USA.

I must say I'm extremely surprised by his numbers. They're great. I didn't expect him to be selling this much. He definitely has one big true loyal fanbase. He should feel proud.

Wow, a #7 debut for Jordin Sparks. That's rough. Serves the label right for not promoting the album at all.

Grammy FYC:
Kanye West, 808s & Heartbreak; Black Eyed Peas, The E.N.D.; John Legend, Evolver; Paolo Nutini, Sunny Side Up; David Guetta, One Love; Kelly Clarkson, "Already Gone"; Jordin Sparks, "Battlefield"; Kings Of Leon, "Use Somebody"; Maxwell, "Pretty Wings"

I read that Jordin Sparks only sold 48K of Battlefield. How pathetic. Her first week sales dipped more than 50% from her self-titled debut album. As expected, this album is a flop. The label should have promoted her album better.

Sales are just horrible. I forgot what she debuted with her debut album. I know it really wasn't that impressive either since it was released in the 4th quarter busy shopping season.
