from hits daily double...

YOUR LABOR DAY WEAKEND CHART PREVIEW: In a wonky week that began with a Monday release date and ends with a holiday weekend, the margin of error may be a little greater than usual (if that's even possible). Here's how we think the top of next week's chart will look:
** Whitney Houston (Arista/RMG) 290-310k
Miley Cyrus (Hollywood) 135-150k
** Trey Songz (Atlantic) 110-120k
Michael Jackson Number Ones (Epic) 60-65k
Colbie Caillat (Universal Republic) 50-55k
Kings of Leon (RCA/RMG) 45-50k
** Chevelle (Epic) 35-40k
Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 30-35k
Hannah Montana: The Movie (Walt Disney) 30-35k
** Pitbull (Polo Grounds/J/RMG) 30-35k
Black Eyed Peas (Interscope) 30-35k
Maxwell (Columbia) 30-35k
** Black Crows (Silver Arrow) 30-35k
Zac Brown Band (Atlantic) 25-30k
** The Used (Reprise) 25-30k
** Denotes debut
Have a mellow Labor Day weekend, boys and girls. See y'all Tuesday. (9/4a)

Dang! Those numbers for the Top 3 are very impressive. Everyone keeps saying something different about what Whitney is expected to make. Some are saying 200,000 and now Hits Daily Double is saying possibly over 300,000? Hope HDD is right? That would definitely be considered a MAJOR comeback for Whit. Also congrats to Trey Songz! 120,000 copies is pretty darn good!

Sidenote:

Does anyone have an updated list of the Best Selling Albums of the Year?????

For Your Grammy Consideration:
Kanye West for "Heartless" and 808's & Heartbreak
Adele for "Hometown Glory"
Taylor Swift for "You Belong With Me" & Fearless
Maxwell for "Pretty Wings" & BLACKsummer'snight
Kings of Leon for "Use Somebody"
The Cast of GLEE for "Don't Stop Believin' "
Mariah Carey for "Obsessed"

200k was the initial projections from HITS. Then it was 250-275k. Now, it's 290-310 and they expect it to increase. The sales from the first three days have been strong and the Labor Day weekend will most likely have a huge effect. So, that's why HITS projections are increasing for Whitney. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes passed 310k.

Blender Magazine on Kelly Clarkson:
" The Texas native has one of the great voices in pop music, a powerful and versatile instrument that’s steeped in the rhythm and blues and country music she grew up with in the South. If Mariah Carey’s five-octave voice is the equivalent of an expensively bred poodle, then Clarkson’s is a bloodhound: friendly, earthy, but fierce just the same."

Baltimore Examiner (concert review):
"Her sultry voice is absolutely flawless. The tone and range floors you. When she belts out a note, it's precise yet powerful."

"Music is powerful, it's a drug that makes your inhibitions go away and leaves your vulnerabilities exposed" - KC

Yes, I think those are extremely good numbers for Whitney considering she has no hit, no video, and only made one major appearance since her release. Pitbull has two major digital hits and only sold a measly 41k first week. People actually thought he and Miley were major competition for Whitney and were proven wrong. These are actually Whitney's biggest first week sales during the Soundscan era. She's off to a great start. I can't wait til the Oprah effect kicks in.

Also, congrats to Trey Songz. I'm not his biggest fan, but his #s are very impressive in deed.

Wow, no album has sold over 2 million copies this year? HOLY ****. That is unbelievable to me.

Congrats to Whitney, tho.

Featured in Best Buy, Target Circulars, Rapper Will Spend Another Week on Top

September 16, 2009

Not even Kanye West can hold back Jay-Z, who will return to the top of the HITS' Album chart next week, with a total that should top 200k for his much-acclaimed Blueprint 3, the first release through his Roc Nation label on Atlantic Records.

In addition to his spate of live TV, The Blueprint 3 will be featured in both Best Buy and Target circulars in its second week in stores.

The figures are estimates from one-day sales reports called in by those retailers who still have working phones and computers.

The real battle will be for second place, where veteran Reprise U.K. rock band Muse, fresh off their triumphant MTV VMA performance with new album Resistance, look headed for between 120-125k in first-week sales, which will put them neck and neck and neck with Arista/RMG's Whitney Houston and Universal Motown's debuting Kid Cudi, both in the 110-120k range.

Sales of Houston's album I Look to You are exploding, thanks to the singer's tell-all appearance on Oprah this week.

Other chart newcomers include Cash Money/Universal Motown's Drake (55-60k); Asylum's Lil Boosie (45-50k); Roadrunner's Megadeth (40-45k); Hollywood teen rockers Honor Society (28-30k); WB's Mark Knopfler (18-20); and Essential Music's Ace Frehley, Dunk Ryder's Trick Daddy and Vagrant's Thrice (all at 12-15k).

The market was up 7% vs. last week, down 2% vs. same week last year and still down 14% year to date.

Kid Cudi has an interesting album. I have been giving it a listen over the last couple days.

Muse is a fun band. Their album is pretty good. If they really do finish in that #3 position, it would be their highest ever chart appearance.

I read that the Beatles stereo remaster set is actually going to hit #15 on the top 200 chart. Not the pop catalog or comprehensive chart. The actual top 200 chart. And the mono remaster is going to hit around #40. Those are somehow not considered back catalog. LOL.

I remember a while back someone had posted a list of the top selling acts of this decade. I believe the Beatles were in 2nd place. I wonder how close they were to #1? Crazy that The Beatles can threaten to be the top selling act of this decade. And I thought 2nd place was pretty wild.
