Ha! Love the Lady GaGa and Beyonce nominations in here. I could understand if the video for Beyonce was nominated was "Sweet Dreams", but "Single Ladies"? Ha! Love it!
I haven't seen the Gnarls Barkey video so that one might win.

How the fuuck does "Single Ladies" get nominated for Special Effects and "Boom Boom Pow" is snubbed in this category and throughout all categories at this years VMAs?
Um...maybe I'm blind? Because I didn't see any special effects in "Single Ladies." I think they got carried away and just dropped the video in every possible category. Is it a great video? Yes. But special effects? OK.
I used to think that this would be the award with which MTV would try to appease Kanye and his big mouth. Fortunately, that was just based on a little snippet I saw of the video; after watching the video in full, though, I honestly can tell that MTV will give it to Gnarls Barkley. Let's face it, none of the other nominated videos has special effects as good as "Who's Gonna Save My Soul," but they also could've chosen better nominees.
Nevertheless, Gnarls Barkley are the darlings of the technical/professional VMAs: They have won at least one tech award at the VMAs EVERY year since 2006! (Editing and Direction in 2006, Editing in 2007, and Choreography and Art Direction in 2008). I don't think they'll try to end the streak this year, especially with such a deserving video as this one.
SHOULD & WILL WIN: Gnarls Barkley, "Who's Gonna Save My Soul"

The Special Effects nomination for "Single Ladies", I guess, is because of the constant change of black and white (nothing really groundbreaking, if you ask me) and it also has to do with the fact that it makes the video look like it was done in one take, but as far as I'm concerned, that belongs to the Editing category.
I'm still in WTF mode about this nomination. My prediction is Gnarls Barkley.

Beyonce isn't the only WTF nominee here. Putting Eminem in front of a green screen with Guitar Hero in the background does not a special effect make! Please give this to Gnarls Barkley and be done.

Interesting, I never noticed they had so many tech awards. If they win again this year in special effects, could they become the act with most awards without a major category win? I think so.
Also, they couldn't have picked a worst group of nominees to face Gnarls Barkley (although I kinda like the effects on the "Paranoid" video, it's more a editing showcase than a special effects one). Truth be told, I understand she's loved around here, but why exactly would "Paparazzi" be deserving of a win in special effects? I just don't see it.
Passion Pit's "The Reeling" should be here. Even "Womanizer" had better special effects than these nominees (with the exception of Gnarls Barkley, of course)

Hmmm... I never thought of that... I guess so, though, since I can't think of anyone else who has won more moonmen than them only in the technical categories.
But you know? If they win Breakthrough Video and Best Special Effects, they will only need to win Cinematography next year to have swept through ALL professional categories (if you still consider Breakthrough Video to still be a professional category even though it's fan-voted this year). I'm kinda rooting for them now.

I know, me too. They are so underrated (even when "Crazy" was huge, it was more a love for the song itself than for them), that I never minded them not having a major win, but it's nice to see that they are rightfully rewarded in the techs.
They really are between the best artists in music and in videos right now ("The Odd Couple" was in my opinion a much superior album than the already pretty good "St. Elsewhere"). Here's hoping for another win here.
Beyoncé — "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" Eminem — "We Made You" Gnarls Barkley — "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" Lady Gaga — "Paparazzi" Kanye West (featuring Mr Hudson) — "Paranoid"
I think these nominees are nice but can someone please explain to me what was so special about the special effects in Single Ladies? I think it's a great video but for Best Special Effects? They should've replaced her with Kid Cudi's Day N' Nite.

It is not easy to carry 50 lbs of weave!!! That in itself is enough for a nomination, specially here!!!!

you know, MTV should be ashamed of themselves...when the GoldDerby fanboys go against a nomination for Beyonce in a category, no matter how undeserving it is, you know you've done something wrong.
It's true, not a single special effect here, you should all go read the description they gave to the video on the mtv site's nominees list. Apparently it's not good editing anymore, everything is special effects.
