I thought it would be fun to do this again. I've been reading the boards and people keep saying stuff like, "well, I like so-and-so, but she's nowhere near my list of favorite female artists" or "she's got some good singles, but not one of my favorites."
So...who are your TOP FIVE? Please list them IN ORDER and limit your list to FIVE WOMEN. Yes, it's hard. My mind is boggling right now just thinking about my list and the endless amount of talented women I love that have to be kept out. But that's why it's called a shortlist.
Here are mine (in order): 1. Beyoncé (incl. Destiny's Child) 2. Mary J. Blige 3. Mariah Carey 4. Whitney Houston 5. Alicia Keys
Combined total of Grammy Awards: 40

Grammy 2009:
• Album of the Year: Raising Sand - Alison Krauss|Robert Plant • Record of the Year: Warwick Avenue - Duffy • Song of the Year: Warwick Avenue - Duffy • Best New Artist: Duffy
Just read the instructions thoroughly. Thus, my edit (smile) Based on vocals, my personal choices are...
1. DONNA SUMMER 2. Mariah Carey 3. Whitney Houston (from her debut to when the bad news started and affected her career) 4. Olivia Newton John 5. Pat Benatar
I'm surprised, kind of, by Madonna entries. Surprised maybe because I'm assuming this is about vocals (range, emotion in delivery, etc.) and not perfomance (visual). Madonna's vocal abilities seem quite limited. Ofcourse, I am assuming what the nature of the thread is all about. The question is who is your favorite female artists. I guess, for some, that is based on more than vocal ability. Like visual performance. Just wanted to say (smile).

Blender Magazine on Kelly Clarkson: " The Texas native has one of the great voices in pop music, a powerful and versatile instrument that’s steeped in the rhythm and blues and country music she grew up with in the South. If Mariah Carey’s five-octave voice is the equivalent of an expensively bred poodle, then Clarkson’s is a bloodhound: friendly, earthy, but fierce just the same."
