Ok, I thought we need more discussions of new artists. I just discovered this new artist today on another board. Her voice is outstanding. From what I'm reading elsewhere her voice is being compared to a young Christina Aguilera. I agree, it's quite reminiscent of Christina. Maybe more reason why I'm liking this girl. Her music incorporates a Pop/Rock sound with a southern country influence. She's 20 years old and signed to Mercury Records/Island Def Jam Group and is being backed and guided by Antonio "L.A." Reid, the music label mogul. Her self-titled album is due for release Summer '09.
What do you guys think of this girls voice? Like it or dislike it? I'm just curious to get the boards opinion on this chick. I think she is one to watch out for this year. Her voice is just killer!!

I think she's gonna try the Taylor Swift method. Get hits both on a Country format and Pop.
Feb 18, 2009 INTRODUCING MERCURY RECORDS ARTIST JESSIE JAMES
JAMES' "BLUE JEANS" FEATURED IN HIT FILM AND ON ALBUM SOUNDTRACK OF CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC
GEARING UP FOR JESSIE JAMES' FIRST SINGLE "WANTED"
(Feb. 18, 2009 - New York, NY) Destined to steal her way into the heart of pop and create her own legend, Jessie James rides in as a new artist signed to Mercury Records, a division of Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJ). This petite powerhouse with amazing vocal power and range will soon release "Wanted" (co-written by James and American Idol’s Kara DioGuardi). It's the first single from Jessie's debut album, which she has been recording in Los Angeles, New York and Nashville.
Jessie's song, "Blue Jeans," can be heard in the Touchstone film and Hollywood Records album soundtrack of the film Confessions of A Shopaholic, starring Isla Fisher, the eagerly-awaited first film adaptation of Sophie Kinsella's popular books. The soundtrack is currently #2 on the iTunes Top Chart, and the movie debuted in the top 5 in its opening weekend. Jessie is in great company on the soundtrack, alongside Natasha Bedingfield, *****cat Dolls, Lady Gaga, Akon, Macy Gray and others.
The traffic-stopping Georgia beauty is a true daughter of the south – although she was born in a military field hospital in Italy. A self-proclaimed ‘military brat,’ she started writing music with her plastic guitar at nine years old, and then in high school, she made weekend road trips from Atlanta to Nashville, where she worked with some of Music City’s great producers and songwriters. A song demo eventually made its way to Mercury president David Massey, who arranged a live audition at IDJ headquarters in New York with Chairman Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid. When Mr. Reid started to dance, "I knew I'd finally found my home," said Jessie. "I can't wait to get out there and sing my songs and continue on this incredible journey."
Someone on one of her videos said she sounds like Christina, Shakira and Carrie Underwood all rapped into one. I happened to agree. I like one of her songs posted.
I just searched and found a new link to her music video for WANTED. This one works. She's cute and seems very likable and marketable. I think she'll do just fine. Whoever said her voice sounds like Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood & Shakira merged into one couldn't have said it any better.
Her debut album dropped yesterday. Going to get a copy tonight.

Okay, so I think this Jessie James girl has a great voice, however...I find that she's missing something. How does someone with a voice like that stay under the radar? I'm not a fan of her first single "Wanted", b/c its way too "in-your-face" for me...if that makes sense? Given that this song hasn't reached very high on the Hot 100, I would say a lot of people felt that way. To me, the song is blah. Given her vocals, she should have come out with something either more pop radio friendly (given that she wants to be a pop artist) or something more original (i.e. not sounding like any other country song out there) than "Wanted" for her first single. Despite having a semi-hit song, I feel like she still hasn't established herself as an artist. Who is she? How does she stand out in the crowd? To me, her record label screwed her over big time, trying to create a country/pop image for her to maybe mimic Taylor Swift's success. Like I said, I think she's a talented vocalist, but as an artist, I just don't get her and have a feeling most people don't either. That will reflect itself in her poor album sales.
Having said that, I would say her chances in Best New Artist are slim at best. The Blue Ribbon Panel would be more likely to nominate someone who's on their 9th album and is an independent artist than to nominate her at this point in the game.
For Your Grammy Consideration: Kanye West for "Heartless" and 808's & Heartbreak Adele for "Hometown Glory" Taylor Swift for "You Belong With Me" & Fearless Maxwell for "Pretty Wings" & BLACKsummer'snight Kings of Leon for "Use Somebody" The Cast of GLEE for "Don't Stop Believin' " Mariah Carey for "Obsessed"
I bought the album yesterday. It's a decent debut. The vocals are outstanding. I'm gonna kinda agree with 24fanatic here in that her label tried way too hard to try to mimic Taylor Swift's successes. It obviously didn't work. I wish Jessie put more uptempo tracks on the album though.
The one thing that her label majorly screwed up on with her debut single "Wanted" was not creating a new radio mix to send out to Country radio. "Wanted" was way too Pop for Country radio to play even though the song did have a bit of a Country twist to it. If the label mixed up the song differently to cater to the Country radio audience she would have made a much bigger impact to start off.
