JANET JACKSON’S GREATEST HITS CELEBRATED ON NUMBER ONES

Two-CD Package Also Features Brand-New Single “Make Me”

In Stores November 17

Los Angeles, CA (October 13, 2009) – Janet Jackson has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and is one of the best-selling artists in contemporary music. For the first time ever, 33 of Janet’s global #1 hits, plus the newly recorded single, “Make Me,” will be available on one album—NUMBER ONES. Made possible by a partnership between Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) and EMI Music, the two-disc set, to be released November 17, 2009, in the USA (November 23, worldwide titled JANET JACKSON: THE BEST), celebrates the career and artistry of one of the most successful and influential artists in music history.

Among the album's many highlights is new single “Make Me,” which was produced by Janet and Rodney Jerkins. Along with “Make Me,” NUMBER ONES spans more than 20 years of chart-toppers, every #1 track spun off from Janet’s original albums, from her 1986 blockbuster breakthrough CONTROL to her most recent, 2008’s DISCIPLINE. CONTROL sold more than 14 million copies worldwide, with five #1 singles. The best-selling album of 1990, RHYTHM NATION 1814 sold more than 14 million copies worldwide, making Janet the first and only artist in history to produce seven top 5 hits from one album. JANET. sold 20 million albums worldwide, with six hit singles and a nomination for an Academy Award® for Best Original Song, “Again.” THE VELVET ROPE has sold more than 10 million worldwide, with six hit singles. ALL FOR YOU was Janet’s fifth consecutive album to debut at #1, with more than seven million in worldwide sales. For Janet's seventh consecutive platinum album, DAMITA JO, Janet took its title from her middle name.

Janet's eighth consecutive platinum album, 20 Y.O., acknowledged her love affair with her fans. Janet encouraged her fans around the world to design the 20 Y.O. cover artwork and she chose her favorites for the U.S. pressings. DISCIPLINE was Janet's 6th number one album and 10th studio album.

NUMBER ONES is the first greatest hits compilation from Janet in this century. Janet’s last hits collection was released in 1995.

I had just posted a long diatribe in another thread recently about how it's odd they've never released a part two to Janet's hits album (or released a new comprehensive one). I have to say that while there are some songs that are missing "Son of a Gun," "You Want This," those were relatively minor hits and they're made up for with the collaborations like "What's It Gonna Be" and "Scream." I think the title is really misleading (as it always is with these hits aside from Mariah's), but I really can't complain about the tracks they chose to represent her "flop" albums. I would have gone with "I Want You" instead of "All Nite" since it was produced by Kanye and was a bigger R&B hit, but that's a small complaint. The only thing that remains to seen is what mixes they use. I really hope they go with the single/video mixes for "Control," "The Pleasure Principle," "Rhythm Nation," and "Alright." And this would have been a great opportunity to have a "comeback" with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis but maybe she's saving that for the new studio album. "Make Me" was produced by Rodney Jerkins.

I think people forget how big Janet used to be. True, she fell off after All For You, but she still has a fantastic catalog of music.

This updated GH set is long overdue. Sadly, I think it'll flop much like Madonna's latest GH albums. I went to Target last week and Madonna's latest GH album is priced at $21.99. Nope

Who the hell is going to pay that much for songs you can easily download off the net for free?

And 11/7 is less than a month away. Why the hell wasn't this album promoted sooner?

Could she be trying to capitalize off Micheals death scandal and Holiday sales?

Which version were you looking at? The standard version is cheaper than 21.99

Well I think its about time she had a Hits compilation. She's had hits upon hits. Maybe the new single might spark up some interest in her again. It's sad how she's fallen way down from that high pedestal.

It's about time! Many classic, classic songs on here. Even most of her recent stuff is still good (Listened to "Feedback" the other day. Forgot how much I enjoyed it). I will definitely pick this up.

I was going to get Madonna's latest GH set, but realized that I have almost everything I want from her from the her other GH's and her latest albums.

DoubleD, the double disc has 36 songs on it (from Madonna). How much would you think it would sell for? Madonna clearly doesn't care about record sales anymore. She's got her LiveNation deal, and that's where the money is.

I don't know. I think both this and Madonna's could do well over the holiday season. It's true that hits collections don't sell well anymore, but these artists are slightly older and could appeal to older fans, who still buy CDs. It's a long-term project that will probably sell for years to come, even if it's slow and steady. It's just nice that these albums EXIST period. In the case of Janet, it was long overdue. Michael's death proved that there's still a market for CDs, especially for older artists like Madonna and Janet.

True, that might not be her main reason for putting it out, but those factors will definetly work for her favor.

^ I wouldn't be surprised if that's why they included "Scream," but I think the opportunism ends there.

"Scream" is one of Janet's hits, so of course it would make the compilation.

Damn. Sometimes you forget what an amazing catalogue this woman has. I love virtually all those songs, minus some of the more recent stuff.

She was overdue for another greatest hits collection, and that's a strong lineup of songs there. "Make Me" is a great addition to that. This should be a nice Christmas pickup.

I still live for "Alright" --- the song and video with Heavy D.

"I Want You" should have been there instead of "Runaway" though.

How so? "I Want You" wasn't a hit. "Runaway" was.

Yes, from my perspective it's a song that should definitely be included, but it's the type of song I can see an artist leaving off their greatest hits. Hell, even MJ left it off one or two of his more recent collections. The video was more popular than the actual song.

If anything "I Want You" should be included instead of "All Nite," which I said in my first post. But I can see how someone could make a case for any of the three singles from that album being included: "Just a Little While" was arguably the "biggest" hit (it was a #1 Dance hit and was the biggest Hot 100 hit from the album), "I Want You" was a moderate R&B hit (peaking at #18, #57 on the Hot 100) and "All Nite" was a #1 Dance hit. I guess one of the first two would have made more sense in retrospect but I doubt anyone is going to care.

"Runaway" is one of my favorite Janet songs. It better be on the compilation!
