God, finally an official rock band thread. Well, anyways, this is the official thread for alt. rock band Coldplay. I just read from Rolling Stone that they're releasing it June 16th in the U.K. and June 17th in the U.S and it's callled "Viva La Vida Or Death And All Its Friends".
I can't wait for the album to come out. But I have a question. I have a hard time classifying what genre they are but I think its piano pop/alternative rock. Proceed.

They've gotta do something musically with this album or they are dead to me. "X&Y" was a fine album to listen to at first, but it got real boring real fast. It was what I expected to hear from them. They need to take a chance and do something different.

I'm very curious to see if Coldplay can regain their momentum. In the earlier part of this decade, they were the "it" band. Every hot music act was namedropping them and a lot of high-profile artists worked with Chris Martin. You knew their popularity has reached an insane level when they beat out some stiff competition and won that ROTY Grammy a few years back. But it seems like a lot of people were disappointed by X&Y and their buzz faded.
With that said, I think Coldplay has the potential to get back into popular music's good graces. I think the industry is looking for another rock band to embrace.
Can they make it 4 in a row?? I loved what the did with their last three albums. I know some people harp on X&Y but that was one of my favorite albums of 2005 and songs like "Fix You" and "Speed Of Sound" were some of my favorite songs of that year too.
As for the album title: it's completely ridiculous, but I tend to like ridiculous so we'll see how that pans out.
As for their sound, I don't see why they have to do something completely different. They sort of have their own little niche in the rock world. Nasdaq is right, it's hard to classify the type of rock they do. I tend to call it "yuppie rock", and I'll group acts like Keane and Snow Patrol into that as well -- sort of coffeehouse alt/pop rock...if that makes any sense to any one lol. I like their music and style, and while I agree they should be progressing artistically and strive to make better music, I don't think they should veer too far away from what they do best and what people are accustomed to and like from them.

I don't know what I think of the title but hopefully the songs will be good like their last album. They just released the songs and said it will be a short record with 9 songs and will be 42 minutes long. These are the songs that they've made and they are in the process of choosing what'll be on the album.
"Famous Old Painters" "Glass of Water" "Lost" "Cemeteries of London" "Violet Hill" "Poppy Fields" "42" "Yes !" "Leftrightleftrightleft" "Rainy Day" "Prospekt's March" Strawberry Swing" "Lovers in Japan" "Song for the Escapist" "Death & All His Friends" "Life In Technicolour" "Chinese Sleep Chant" "Reign of Love"
I love these titles and I'm pretty sure "Death & All His Friends" will be on the album and be the title track. I also must say that I loved X&Y even though it could get tedious. But A Rush Of Blood To The Head was far superior.

Well, the thing with Snow Patrol is that they constantly surprise me within their "niche". Yes, they are a rock band and they stick within their genre, but they do little things within each song that goes against my expectations. If it's the sudden choir that appears on "Shut Your Eyes", the full rock-out on "Open Your Eyes", the simplicity of a music box on "You Could Be Happy", the slow build of "Chasing Cars", Martha Wainwright on "Set Fire To The Third Bar", the epicness of "Make This Go On Forever". These are all rock songs and have a similar feel to them, but I feel like Snow Patrol makes sure they set each song apart in some way. With "X&Y", save for a few songs like "Fix You", "Swallowed in the Sea", and "Til Kingdom Come", I thought, while all the songs were fine, they didn't stand out from each other.
So no, I'm not expecting Coldplay to suddenly become a hip-hop or R&B band, I am expecting them to put a little more effort into making something new and exciting.

I think they've already made something new and exciting. How many people before Coldplay did you know that played the kind of music they did ? None. Sure there have been copycat bands (The Fray, Snow Patrol, etc.) but none of their albums have come close to the brilliance of an album like A Rush Of Blood To The Head or X&Y. Coldplay were always the originals an will always be as far as that certain genre. They don't need to create a new image or sound because they can ride on talent alone.

I think most people were disappointed by X&Y. I'm a huge fan of Coldplay, and while I think X&Y is a pretty solid record, I was really let down after the first listen.

What about subsequent listens? I didn't like the album after my first couple listens too.

Well, that I can agree with considering I hold A Rush Of Blood To The Head and Parachutes in EXTREMELY high esteem -- seriously, like two of my favorite albums ever.

I only heard that from people in these forums.
lol @ Guru. Yeah, some people are getting too caught up thinking that GD members are the majority. I didn't hear anything about X&Y even though it could get tedious.

Coldplay Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends 6/17
For their fourth album, Coldplay enlisted producer Brian Eno to broaden their palette beyond the piano-heavy anthems the band is best known for: "Strawberry Swing" includes Afro-pop guitars, "42" is a three-part epic built on glitchy loops and "Yes!" mixes Middle Eastern percussion with Chris Martin's newfound deep-register vocals. "It's impossible to please everybody, and it took us a while to learn that," says Martin, adding that he credits Eno, who has made records with U2 and the Talking Heads, with helping the band leave its comfort zone. "You have to stop caring about what you're known for," says Martin. "So even if it's ****, at least it's brave."
