T-Pain nabs five BET Award noms Kanye West, Keyshia Cole receive three each By ASSOCIATED PRESS
T-Pain's status as urban music's most frequent collaborator helped him nab a leading five BET Award nominations. Kanye West and Keyshia Cole received three nominations, while Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and newcomer Flo Rida received a pair each. The awards were to be announced later Thursday.
While T-Pain has his own hits, including the chart-topper "Buy U a Drank," the singer and his electronically manipulated voice are often found on other people's songs. He received nominations for best collaboration for his work with Chris Brown ("Kiss Kiss"), West ("Good Life") and Flo Rida ("Low"), while he was also nominated twice in the video of the year category.
"T-Pain is everywhere," BET Executive Vice President Stephen Hill told The Associated Press. "He's got five nominations, none of them for his own work."
"He's had a great year; he's introduced a new element," Hill said, referring to T-Pain's vocoder-assisted vocals that have been replicated by other artists such as Snoop Dogg.
While the nominees include many hitmakers, Hill said the awards also celebrate those who aren't yet in the mainstream, such as R&B singers Estelle and Raheeem DeVaughn, who each received a nomination.
"Our voting panel picked not just the hits but folks who are really talented who are just now getting a shot," he said.
The BET Awards will be presented June 24 in Los Angeles.
Al Green will be honored with a lifetime achievement award. Quincy Jones will receive an award for his humanitarian work.
"Besides being the best black awards show that we have, also being one of the best awards show period, their ratings are through the roof," said Nelly, who is set to perform at the live awards show. "They're tuning in - black, white, Japanese, Chinese - you got it, they're tuning in, which says a lot."
Nelly and Usher were among those expected to announce the nominations on BET's "106 & Park" later Thursday. Usher is also set to perform on the live June broadcast, as well as Lil Wayne, Blige and Mariah Carey.

I would pick Keyshia Cole for the win. Due to the fact I think she has the greater impact with the urban/bet viewers who watch BET. If this was a grammys I would definetely have Alicia Keys to win of course.

The only category that i can get a hold of as of now
Yeah thats' the only category I saw also.
I hit it right on the money with this category.I predicted all 5 nominees correctly. Alicia Keys will most likely win.
Yeah....I pretty much got this category right. But, I was iffy about Rihanna. Guess I shouldn't have looked into it THAT much. lol
Anyway.....I can't wait to see who BET nominated. This article isn't telling much. Since RIhanna got nominated here, will she be nominated in VOTY or Collabo?!

I think we have a genuine five-way race for R&B Female.
Mary J. Blige has won this category three times this decade.
Alicia Keys won this category the last time she was nominated. Both "No One" and "Like You'll Never See Me Again" stayed at #1 on the 106 & Park countdown for several weeks and "Teenage Love Affair" is gaining video airplay on BET.
Keyshia Cole is royalty to BET and urban fans alike. She's probably seen as overdue to start winning awards. "Let It Go," "Shoulda Let You Go" and "I Remember" have been mainstays at BET.
I think Rihanna is more popular with pop audiences. How well did "Shut Up & Drive," "Hate That I Love You" and "Don't Stop the Music" do at BET? And how is "Take A Bow" doing right now? If "Take A Bow" is a hit on BET during the voting period then she might win.
Mariah Carey is overdue to win a BET Award. I thought she might get one during the Mimi era, but Mary J was having her BREAKTHROUGH error.
Keep in mind that India.Arie has won this category twice so BET doesn't always go with the person whose had the biggest year. And they don't always go with the biggest name.
Female R&B Artist is quite the category this year, but I think that we can begin eliminating some folks here.
Despite being the inaugural winner of this category, we can safely eliminate Mary J. Blige. She only wins when she's been the most recently successful of her other nominees. This year, ALL 4 of the other women are experiencing more success.
We can also eliminate Rihanna. To answer DoubleD's question, "Shut Up and Drive" wasn't a big BET hit. "Hate That I Love You" received major airplay on BET, and it didn't hurt that Ne-Yo was featured.
What we have here is a 3-way race between Mariah Carey, Keyshia Cole, and Alicia Keys.
Right now, Alicia is definitely the frontrunner. If Alicia manages to lose (which is highly unlikely), then Keyshia will win. Then Mariah.

Wow these are some pretty solid nominees.Better than last year.
Im so happy that Danity Kane and Day26 got nominated for Best Group.I didnt expect to see them get in that category but conratulations. I'll post my predictions later.
hate that i love you peaked at number 2 on 106 umbrella peaked at number 4 on 106
those are rihanna's only two BET hits out of her other MAINSTREAM POP hits. we all know rihanna does NOT have a BET following cause she is a POP ARTIST, so it would be NO surprise to me if she LOSES the award.
I, too, am shocked by "Umbrella"'s omission. It could've obviously fit perfectly into quite a few categories, and I think it would've won Best Collaboration had it been nominated. But overall, I think that BET has produced some amazing nominees this year.
The VOTY category is easily the best. I think that "Honey" should win (and Erykah has won this category before), but I'm positive that either Kanye or Alicia is gonna win.
Now that the nominations are out, I predict that Estelle will be nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys. One thing I've noticed by tracking the BET Awards every year since its inception is that at least 1 nominee for Best New Artist is also nominated at the Grammys:
2001 - India.Arie, Jill Scott 2002 - Ashanti, Alicia Keys 2003 - 50 Cent, Heather Headley, Sean Paul 2004 - Kanye West 2005 - Ciara, John Legend 2006 - Chris Brown 2007 - Corinne Bailey Rae
Of this year's nominees, Estelle seems most poised to nab the accompanying Grammy nomination. Flo Rida is a novelty; he's out. Chrisette Michele, Soulja Boy, and The-Dream are already previous Grammy nominees. That leaves the very deserving Estelle.
Now, here are my winner predictions:
Best Male R&B Artist Chris Brown
Best Female R&B Artist Alicia Keys
Best Group UGK
Best New Artist Chrisette Michele
Best Male Hip-Hop Artist Kanye West
Best Female Hip-Hop Artist Lil' Mama
Best Collaboration "Good Life," Kanye West feat. T-Pain
Video of the Year "Like You'll Never See Me Again," Alicia Keys
Viewer's Choice "No Air," Jordin Sparks feat. Chris Brown
My R&B Female prediction is subject to change, but I doubt it. Chris Brown winning R&B Male will be the easiest win of the night. He's a lock, IMO.
Wait wasn't "Umbrella" eligible this year? If so, I can't believe it was snubbed in Video, Viewer's Choice and Best Collaboration.
I know right?! How did "Umbrella" get THAT overlooked? I thought Rihanna woulda got a Collabo nod at the least over VOTY even. I think these are a pretty decent list of nominations, but RIhanna and "Umbrella" really got overlooked. I mean, completely. Either it was ineligible (since the hit was last year a little bit after the nominations were out), so maybe thats what it was. Overlooked. Just remember "Crazy" got nominated for VOTY last year, when it was a hit around the same time "Umbrella" was two years ago.
I'm not sure where "Umbrella" peaked on 106, but it was pretty massive on BET. I definitely thought they give it some love, especially cuz' Jay-Z was a part of it. Some pretty surprising nominations for Danity Kane and Jordin Sparks in Viewer's Choice. lol I thought New Artist, but Viewer's Choice?!
Umm....VOTY is stiff competition, though I think its safe to say it will go to Alicia or Kanye. Whereas R&B Artist will go to Keyshia, in a shock. Same for Lil' Wayne in Male Hip-Hop.

I, too, am shocked by "Umbrella"'s omission. It could've obviously fit perfectly into quite a few categories, and I think it would've won Best Collaboration had it been nominated.
Yeah, I agree. Had the song been nominated, I'm pretty sure she would've won it with flying colors. Thats why I'm surprised they didn't nominate her there. They had six categories in VOTY, might as well add "Umbrella" in Collabo at least. It was her biggest hit on urban radio as well. In the R&B/Hip-Hop charts, she peaked at #3, so I thought they'd nominate it for sure. Oh well. Maybe another year. At least she has a Grammy! lol
Also, notice how "Let It Go", "Good Life", AND "Kiss Kiss" were nominated for Grammy's this year? "Umbrella" actually won there, while she got nothing at the BET Awards this year. Oh and "I Wanna Love You" was nominated last year. So, all four made the cut, except the actual winner. Weird and wrong. But I think it has something to do with the eligibility date. Can someone find out when the eligibility date is for the BET Awards?! I really think "Umbrella" didn't make the cut, so they nominated her for R&B Female. That is the one category I was iffy about with her too.

I am also shocked to see that Rihanna didnt make it into VOTY and Best Collabo.I know for sure she was eligible because BET Always nominates Videos from the year before(Crazy In Love,Goldigger ETC)I still dont get it.
I think Keyshia will upset Alicia in Female R+B. Her videos were all over BET and she had her reality show "The Way It Is" which was very popular on BET.I hope Keyshia can win.Her album was better than Alicia's anyway.
Lil Wayne and Chris Brown better win something. I thought Chris would get into Viewer's Choice for "With You" not "Kiss Kiss" but oh well.Soulja Boy is gonna win that one!
These are my predictions...AND, I expect surprises.

BTW, there is a Best Video Director category now. Which was needed.
I think that will go to ether Chris Robinson or Hype Williams. Here are the nominees.... - Erykah Badu and Mr. Roboto - Benny Boom - Gil Green - Chris Robinson (YET, no nod for "Umbrella". lol) - Hype Williams
