It's truly GREAT that MIA is in the lineup for a Grammy. In the cause of peace in my homeland, hope she does not try to hijack the show by touting the Tamil Tiger cause. If at all, she should call for freeing of 300,000 of our people by Tiger leader Prabhakaran. Keeping fingers crossed for the big day.
Yes, MIA should not tout the Tamil Tigers who use defeseless Tamil civillians by force as a shield and killed more Tamils than the SL army. According to FBI, Tamil Tigers are the most vicious Terrorist group and they are banned in the USA. It is my guess that touting them is a reason for disqualification.
I genuinely hope she DOES bring it up (obviously I do not wish her to promote genocide and terrorism or the negative actions of the Tamil Tigers).
What is going on in Sri Lanka right now is truly disgusting, and if President Obama is true to his vows for change and his endorsement of a renewed commitment to liberty, freedom, and humanity in the United States, and the United States' duty to be a "moral" leader around the world, he will DO SOMETHING and not just sit back and turn a blind eye to genocide like so many Western leaders with the powers to intervene have done in the past.
There are certain things that are just a little more important than "music" -- I hope M.I.A. brings a lot of light to this travesty if she is given the stage to do so.

M.I.A., we saw how you use your celebrety status to support the ruthless terrorist organization, LTTE that keeps killing innocent Tamill civilians in the Government declared safety zone, and that has killed so many moderate Tamil leaders. You said on PBS that the Sri Lankan Government is victimizing the civilians, but look at LTTE's own statements on how they treat civilians who wants to flee their open prison: "A few unpatriotic elements of Thamil Eelam has unsuccessfully tried to cross over to Sri Lankan territory and has met with severe consequences by the Tamil Eelam National Guard.". Please don't be fooled, or please don't use your money to finance terrorism, or use your celebrety status to give them breathing space to kill more civilians. There are other ways to paint a rebellious personality for you to capture that niche market (young rebellious audience).

No offense, but personally, I don't think MIA is Grammy or Oscar material. I'm also not impressed by the way she handled the Tavis Smiley show. It was pretty obvious she was trying to push the pro-terrorist envelope. BTW, what is her connection with the PLO? I had no knowledge of MIA before but now with the crisis in Sri Lanka I read up on her. Read that as a child she moved to London and that her dad was an activist for the Tigers. So one wonders if she's brainwashed by dad? I have traveled to Sri Lanka on business and the ground situation for her ethnic group - Tamilians - is not as dire. They live peacefully in the south. Here is an interesting link I found.
Well done MIA. Wish you all the best for the future. I think when you talk about an issue that you do not really know and understand, better to do some research beforehand. It is good to talk about people and their suffering, but do not try to whitewash a ruthless terrorist organization that wiped out large number of moderate Tamil leaders. Even now they keep thousands of Tamils exposed to gun fire hoping they will get killed in order to create an international outrage. So write songs about people and innocent children who are waiting for impending death because their leader wants them to die in order to come to power.
Congratulation on your nomination and I hope you win it.
Mia is right that there is a genocide going on in Sri Lanka, but its certainly not that of the Tamils! Sinhalese maybe a majority in the island country, but if you look just over 25 miles to the North of the island, there is no doubt that Sinhalese are the minority in the geographic region. Sinhalese have systematically been eradicated by the LTTE to the tune of the rabbit and the porcupine story.
The civil war in Sri Lanka has been fought because the of the LTTE's selfish desire to divide up a country that has been called the "melting pot of Asia" out of nothing but self serving greed. LTTE wanted a large part of the country and about 70% of the coastal part of the island for less than 15% of the island's population. If the African Americans or Mexicans in the USA started a similar stunt, I dont think the rest of the country would stand by idly. Sri Lanka has been doing just that; trying to make a UNITED COUNTRY FOR THE GOOD OF ALL ITS CITIZENS; nothing less, nothing more.
MIA is "fighting" with a self centered ulterior motive for her people who doesn't need any help; she is the daughter of an LTTE activist (EROS) and merely self glorifying herself through the lie that has been told by her father and propagated by the LTTE to the western media throughout its campaign.
I am not claiming that everything has been well. It took a modern country such as The United States a long time to over come racial tension and social equalty. The Tamils of Sri Lanka has fared much better; as living proof of this, the Sri Lankan economy is mostly controlled by the minorities, not the natives of the country. We are a small country less than the size of West Virgina, and we have to learn to get along with each other. However, this is not a reality untill we stand united as one nation.
It is the life and culture of the Sinhalese that has been under attack throughout the centuries. It has even been mentioned in the age old Indian religious epic story Ramayana, which describes a war between Sri Lanka and India.
It is sad that Mia has to propagate and extend the lies of her father, while proclaiming that she thinks for her own. It is the one who knows, yet stands idly by, or worse, promotes the wrong doers, that is the worst kind of offender of his own self conscience and that of human justice. Mia's interview, which I listend to, has convinced me that she is trully Missing In Action in mind and soul. While Mia goes on trying to divide a country in self interest, intolerance and hatred, we will build a nation that stands united.
After having written this, I also came to the realization that Mia is stuck between a rock and a hard place. As a Tamil that has achieved international fame, members of her community look to her for propagating and validating their message about an issue that they feel is justified looking thru their own self centered views. As I see it, from Mia's point of view, she has to validate her father, who is an LTTE activist, and validate those who are trying to divide up Sri Lanka or be ostracized by members of her community that supports LTTE. Sadly , Mia has chosen the lower path of continuing to propagate the lie.

In his defense, the outrage is 100% justifiable, though I may disagree with some of the pretenses, and the harshness toward MIA.
However, if he's trying to push sociopoltical will in this forum, he's wasting his time.

MIA should be using her fame to make the world aware of the true situation in Sri Lanka (SL) instead of spreading false propaganda!
It's not only the innocent Tamils who are getting killed in SL, many innocent Sinhala people do too! Everyday families set out to school/work not knowing when or where bombs are set off by LTTE. Similarly many Tamil children are sent out to the war front instead of school due to LTTE child recruitment. The so called freedom fighters (LTTE) have sent their kids away to European countries for education and they themselves are hiding underground while the innocent are forcibly pulled out from their homes and schools to fight a useless war! So MIA gets this right, the genocide you refer is not by the government but by a few misguided people who claim to represent all Tamils. Let me politely remind you, at some point in time your father too belongs to this misguided group.
I have my own family members who could not complete their studies at the Jaffna University because of the unrest. I have friends and family who died or were injured by bombs set by the group you embrace. I had to leave my country due to security situation there. Many Sri Lankans (not only Tamils) are affected by the war directly or indirectly. MIA lost her father because he CHOSE WAR thus creating a difficulty for MIA & her family but many others lost their family because they were innocent by standers or were forced into it by the misguided LTTE.
Since we live in USA, just think for a moment if the African American chose war over peace! How about in India, Tamils live well with all other ethnic groups without choosing war, so why cannot Tamils in SL do the same?
So, choose your words wisely MIA! I wish you all the luck with the nominations and the baby. Here is my challenge for you, come and be a part of SL and to help rebuild the north of SL and also to help the innocent SL people once the war is over!
I have created a blog to expose the lies of the LTTE, its supporters and symhpthasiers. What Sri Lanka needs is unity not division, peace not terrorism, love not hatred, communication not propaganda. Let us stand united as Sri Lankans, not be divided to be conquered by the power hungry megalomaniacs who want to divide this beautiful island for their own benefit. We need the world to know the true face of LTTE, that is the teacher of terrorist techniques to Al-Qaeda which has become the imitator and the mass producer of the techniques mastered by the LTTE.
