I've heard people say that because an artist is relevant it means their talented. Whenever I talk to my friends they say she's irrelevant because she's not talented. What do you guys think? And how come only relevant artists can be talked about on a Forum?

I'd say the two can certainly be - and often are - mutually exclusive.

Some of the most collectively considered "relevant" artists are certainly not the most talented, and sadly some of the most talented voices and musicians to come along, especially in the last decade, aren't automatically perceived as "relevant." For me, relevancy has come to mean more of the way a type of music fits into trends of any given time. There's often no telling if what is relevant today will be a flash in the pan or go on to be a classic.

That's my take on the question, anyway.

no

Just because they are relevant, doesn't equate to talented. You could have an artist that is packaged beyond belief by their label, have the best song writers and producers around them, and have many hits, which makes them relevant. But, they do not really have an artistic, creative bone in their body, and be pro tooled, auto toned to death. They may be relevant now, but, will this kind of artist last in the long run? When the truths about their so called talent is revealed, I believe their relevancy will fade away in the long run.

Blender Magazine on Kelly Clarkson:
" The Texas native has one of the great voices in pop music, a powerful and versatile instrument that’s steeped in the rhythm and blues and country music she grew up with in the South. If Mariah Carey’s five-octave voice is the equivalent of an expensively bred poodle, then Clarkson’s is a bloodhound: friendly, earthy, but fierce just the same."

Baltimore Examiner (concert review):
"Her sultry voice is absolutely flawless. The tone and range floors you. When she belts out a note, it's precise yet powerful."

"Music is powerful, it's a drug that makes your inhibitions go away and leaves your vulnerabilities exposed" - KC

I agree. There are some people who think Soulja Boy is more talented than Nas just because he has an album out. Red Face WTF? Same thing with Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera. Nope

Well I think everyone has some sort of talent if they're in the business. Some just don't have great of talent.

I think musicians were much more talented in past decades. You actually had to known how to sing and perform. You can basically get away with that nowadays.

Ahhh...the Killers are fantastic!

I think that just because someone is considered "relevant" doesn't mean they are talented.I could write a novel about this but I'll just say that some think just because a person is popular, they are more talented than those who are not as popular. They actually think that someone who's a great singer, plays instruments, writes their own material, can read music, etc,is not as talented because they aren't "seen" 24/7 or aren't "packaged" to death.
It's all "who's hot" and who's not.To think, some are penalized for their actual talent. It's like upside down world.
