Since I haven't seen a thread for Duffy I decided to create one as I believe she has a brilliant album."Mercy" and the second single "Warwick Avenue" are both brilliant records and I hope she can score success in America as she has in the UK and Europe.
Here's the Billboard review for her album "Rockferry":
Rockferry DUFFY Producer(s): various Label: Mercury The recent surge of Europeans retrofitting and upgrading 1960s soul rolls on in swirling style with this debut from Duffy, a Welsh singer/songwriter from the school of jazzy chanteuses who are here to maximize the international-but-not-too-international-for-Starbucks style, but sound quite lovely doing it anyway. "Rockferry" hits the major notes: "Warwick Avenue" is a string-smooched jazz number, the title cut is a towering wall of piano-powered sound with moody lyrics, and first single "Mercy" is about as summery as summery gets. Like all such records, "Rockferry" splits its time between paying tribute to its source material and knocking it off, but its principal's vocals, and generally pleasing wall-of-sound treatment, make it a good move anyway. —Jeff Vrabel

Grammy FYC: Kanye West, 808s & Heartbreak; Black Eyed Peas, The E.N.D.; John Legend, Evolver; Paolo Nutini, Sunny Side Up; David Guetta, One Love; Kelly Clarkson, "Already Gone"; Jordin Sparks, "Battlefield"; Kings Of Leon, "Use Somebody"; Maxwell, "Pretty Wings"
I don't know why, but I can't get into this girl. "Mercy" is decent and "Warwick Avenue" is good, but I got sick of the Amy Winehouse sound with Amy Winehouse.

I love "Mercy" and "Warwick Avenue", so I'll be buying Duffy's album this weekend. Hopefully she'll make it all the way to the Best New Artist category this cycle.

Probably wouldn't work as a single, but "Distant Dreamer" is one of my favourite tracks of the year.

I agree! Since the Dixie Chicks' "Taking the Long Way" I haven't enjoyed an album as a whole as much as this, the video for "Warwick Avenue" is so simple yet relatable I think(been watching it over and over again)...of course many will disagree and that's alright!

"Rockferry" is an excellent album. I had no idea that her work would be like this. Duffy digs deeper than I ever thought she would, and as good as "Mercy" and "Warwick Avenue" both are, there's still even stronger material on here, like "Hanging on Too Long", "Stepping Stone", "Serious", and "Rockferry". Great throwback album, and one of the best of 2008 so far.

Duffy is so awesome! She has this '60s-soulful voice that you just love! When I first heard "Mercy," I though, "oh wow, '60s music is making a comeback" - only to realize later that the song is by an up-and-coming artist, Duffy. She is so awesome!
I really hope she gets a few grammy nods!

I just heard "Mercy" on the radio, and while I did like it, I thought it sounded like a lost Amy Winehouse track. Anyone want to explain to me how this girl isn't just a Wino knock-off?
count me as one of the few who prefer Duffy over Amy Winehouse.
don't get me wrong. i think Winehouse is great, and her "Back To Black" is an amazing album. but Duffy, IMO, has a much wider vocal range, and her album "Rockferry" offers more variety.

Download "Distant Dreamer".

My opinion is that Duffy shows a wider range vocally and better songwriting..besides her live performances (check youtube) are the real deal, no bad notes at all..she doesn't have the promotional machine Leona Lewis has had or the tabloid overkill Amy's gotten, but she's got a brilliant record from beginning to end and songs like "Warwick Avenue," "Rockferry" and "Stepping Stone" are classics waiting to happen...just my two cents. I do own Amy's album and love it but Duffy is in my ears in another league.

SHE'S GOT SOUL Duffy follows the Amy Winehouse template — at least professionally — as a U.K. import with an amazing pop-R&B voice She may lack Amy Winehouse's saltiness and snarl, but the Welsh singer Duffy's sweeter vocals still crackle with soul. ''Mercy'' — a U.K. hit ready-made for U.S. radio — is a go-go number that's as sassy as a Mary Quant miniskirt. And when Duffy slows the tempo for ''Rockferry'' and ''Hanging On Too Long,'' her voice stretches to spectacular heights. The minor-chord-heavy tracks on Rockferry — each a kiss-off to a defective relationship — begin sedately and swell to a startling climax. Once the Dusty Springfield-flecked closer, ''Distant Dreamer,'' comes round, you'll be wishin' and hopin' for more. A-

It's mainly proximity. She just came out a year too late, but it shouldn't be held against Duffy. "Rockferry" is a strong album. I think that "Back to Black" is the superior and more cohesive effort, but they are comparable enough albums.
