I'm not sure if we've done this thread yet, but oh well.

So believe it or not, this decade is almost over.

Years from now, which songs and albums will be deemed "essential recordings" from this decade?

And please, please, please let's not overpopulate this thread with talks of female pop/R&B singers. I have a feeling most of their material will be long forgotten in 10+ years.

Let's start with the year 2000.

I think U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind and Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP will more than likely be deemed "essential recordings" of this decade. In addition to being multiple Grammy winners, both albums left on a huge impact on the music industry.

What do you guys think?

Back to Black will definitely be considered a definitive recording from this decade. There's no denying that even if you dislike the album.

My Ten Essential Songs of the 2000s...

1. "Lose Yourself", Eminem

Defines Eminem's career, a chapter in rap and popular music, and it won an Oscar.

2. "Fallin", Alicia Keys

Marked the beginning of a career of dominance and prominence, both commercially and artistically in R&B.

3. "Umbrella", Rihanna

Domination is the word. The biggest track of an artist that dominated a good two years of music. Not to mention it also represents the potency and influence of the songwriting and production of The-Dream in the latter part of the decade.

4. "Beautiful Day", U2

U2 has been one of the biggest bands in the 2000's and this is one of the most gorgeous songs they have ever written.

5. "Hey Ya!", Outkast

Represents to prowess of Outkast during this decade, the first rap act to win AOTY at the Grammys. Plus the song is hella KICK ASS.

6. "We Belong Together", Mariah Carey

One of the biggest hits for one of the most successful artists of all time; representative of the comeback story that stole the show at the heart of this decade. Also, it was the influence for many copycat hits including "Be Without You."

7. "Irreplaceable", Beyonce

A significant hit for an artist that dominated the 2000's. Spawned many copycat singles, and is now the source of many pop culture phrases such as "To the left, to the left."

8. "Paper Planes", MIA

Simply one of the best songs by one of the most critically-acclaimed artists to actually become a smash hit in the 2000's. A complete fluke of a hit, but it will be remembered for "Swagga Like Us" and its affiliation with the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire.

9. "Don't Know Why", Norah Jones

Brought jazz to the forefront of the popular music scene previously dominated by R&B and pop superstars. Represents that new-age, smooth, jazz sound reminiscient of coffee shops that became so prominent.

10. "Rehab", Amy Winehouse

An absolute force of a song that embodies the wave of British artists to saturate the American pop music market in the latter 2000's.

I completely disagree that "Be Without You" is a "We Belong Together" copycat. It bothers me so much when people say that.

Bryan-Michael Cox had a hand in working on both, but I don't think that Mary's song is a Mariah copycat.

For one, "We Belong Together" can easily be classified as pop or R&B, whereas "Be Without You" can only be classified as R&B.
