Often we see artists with multiple nominations going home Grammyless. Here are a few examples:
Mariah Carey - 6 nominations, no wins (1995) Joan Osborne - 5 nominations, no wins (1995) India Arie - 7 nominations, no wins (2001) Brian McKnight - 5 nominations, no wins (2001) Avril Lavigne - 5 nominations, no wins (2002) 50 Cent - 5 nominations, no wins (2003) James Blunt - 5 nominations, no wins (2006)
So who will go home empty-handed come February 8, 2009?
My thoughts:
Duffy - Faces stiff competition in all her categories.
Jazmine Sullivan - I think she'll go the way of Jill Scott and India.Arie their debut years. Showered with noms, but no wins.
I don't understand the Jazmine/Jill Scott/India.Arie comparisons at all.
There's a misconception about Jill Scott's losses. Jill only had three nominations that year. She was only a surprise in Best New Artist. Best Female R&B and Best R&B Album nominations were two givens for her. She was not winning Best Female R&B over artists with much bigger hits ("Bag Lady", "He Wasn't Man Enough", "Try Again"). Best R&B Album was competitive as well.
As for India.Arie, the thing that messed her up was the fact that she was going up against another breakthrough R&B artist in every category, except AOTY. It wasn't a surprise (to me) that she went home with no awards.
I think that comparison is far-fetched. People were saying that Jazmine wouldn't get any nominations, but she popped up with five, which wasn't surprising to me at all. So, I won't say she will go home empty-handed because she actually has a great chance at each category, IMO. But only time will tell.
I do think Duffy will go home empty-handed, but it wouldn't be a huge lost. Adele might go home empty-handed. There aren't any artists with a lot of nominations that have a strong chance at going home empty-handed this Grammy season, probably because of the lack of competition.

I completely agree with you.
Jazmine Sullivan can't possibly be compared to Jill Scott or India.Arie. Unlike those two, Jazmine actually has a strong shot at winning quite a few of her categories. She could easily win Best New Artist, she's the R&B Female frontrunner, and though it's unlikely, she could potentially upset in Best Contemporary R&B Album and/or Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.
Jill wasn't gonna win Best R&B Album that year over D'Angelo (who had an R&B Song nod for one of the year's biggest urban hits) and she wasn't gonna win R&B Female over Toni Braxton; had Braxton lost, I honestly believe that Aaliyah would have won instead.
Despite being the year's leading nominee, India.Arie had absolutely NO SHOT at winning anything (and I think she should've at least won AOTY). She was going against Alicia Keys that year. With Keys, voters were pretty much handed the opportunity to shower a new, critically-acclaimed female singer/songwriter who not only had the critics on her side, but the commercial pull as well. Though India.Arie had better reviews, she didn't have the consumer pull that Alicia had, which is why she didn't stand a chance in any of her seven categories.
Jazmine is the frontrunner to win R&B Female, a category that neither Jill nor India.Arie was gonna win when they debuted. And Jazmine is the leading BNA nominee this year, but unlike India.Arie, she doesn't have an R&B rival to go against.
Jazmine could go home empty-handed, but I severely doubt it. She should at least win BNA in my opinion.
As for big nominees this year, I think Adele and Duffy will both go home empty-handed, and I fully believe they'll both lose BNA to Jazmine.
All the other big nominees are locks in several marquee categories:
- Lil' Wayne - Coldplay - Ne-Yo - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Al Green - George Strait - Jay-Z - Leona Lewis - Kanye West

I think Adele will go home empty-handed as well. But we'll see. She might at least win BNA. But with pop album nods from Leona and Duffy. Duffy may win. My prediction is still Jazmine winning.

I hope not, but, I have a feeling Adele is going home empty handed.
Blender Magazine on Kelly Clarkson: " The Texas native has one of the great voices in pop music, a powerful and versatile instrument that’s steeped in the rhythm and blues and country music she grew up with in the South. If Mariah Carey’s five-octave voice is the equivalent of an expensively bred poodle, then Clarkson’s is a bloodhound: friendly, earthy, but fierce just the same."
Baltimore Examiner (concert review): "Her sultry voice is absolutely flawless. The tone and range floors you. When she belts out a note, it's precise yet powerful."
"Music is powerful, it's a drug that makes your inhibitions go away and leaves your vulnerabilities exposed" - KC

I forgot all about Alicia Keys. Yeah, she'll be going home empty-handed, especially since she won 2 awards last year. Thank goodness! The bitch has too many Grammys as is.
