The anticipation for these final numbers has really changed my entire perspective on wanting Mary to break records. While a huge opening is great, it's really more about how much endurance this album is going to have during the longhaul. It's one thing to open big and drop big the next week...It's another thing to open relatively realistically and continue pushing decent numbers for an extended period of time.
Nevertheless, it was a strategic move to release the two weakest tracks on the album first ("Just Fine" & "Work That"). Because now, there's nothing left but hits. So all in all, I believe Mary will be "just fine."

I still have high hopes for Growing Pains.
If it wasn't for the Christmas season, the album would've gone to number one. Even so,the numbers are great for her. My fave tracks are Hurt,Work That,Roses,Nowhere Fast, and Till the Mornin
The Therapy Pains of Mary J. Blige That shoulde've been the title of " Growing Pains" ,as i see lil growth from The Breakthrough. The album start of with the album weakest track " Work That" . I never really like the song it always seem to me like "GWD" remix the song is just blah to me, Beside Mary great vocal over a hip hop track which we all were begging for, which still doesnt feel hip hop enuff for me. "Grown Woman Complex" CAN I JUST SAY WOW .I knew this song was something special back in aug 2007. this song is clearly the reason why Mary is the queen of hip hop soul, from the hard hitting drum to The Dream calling "MJB" through out the song ,Luda 16 Bars this song had first single written all over it. Mary rode the beat like no other singer Or rapper could, luda still couldnt keep up. Just Fine , What can i say the has'nt been all ready said ,(GREAT SONG WRONG fIRST SINGLE CHOICE). Feel like A Woman ... Oh **** this is that hip hop soul ballad that i been await for years. Nuffu put it down like he was tim had me believing (Keri & Timberland) Hook mary up with some heat, Great song Need to be a single when "smoke " is released. Stay Down , I was wonder what happen to my fav three in the studio.. (BJM) The lil Prince type sample that in the track make it great my only problem is the song goes in & out of steam in some part the only thing that keep me coming back is (I need u baby iam just like wezzy baby not wezzy like the son of baby but the wife of geogie and we moving on up ). I almost crash when Mary said that, The line was clearly Mr Austin . Hurt Agian My Mother love the song as she feel like the song is a leftover from (My life) At this point anything from my life is good , I really can feel Mary's pain on this song had me about to drop a tear when mary say ( I don't deserve it I can never get hurt again Never, ohhh... ) Get's me evertime . Shake down ..next .. Till ly Morining , Man oh man,, Mary had fun with this song its clearly a album filler gone good the 80's Beat, The (Heatbeat) style vocal just something to dance to, get the 30 over party jumping . Roses ,I was hoping KENDU wasnt around when mary was loading that gun because.. lyricly she was shooting at Mr Issace like it was nobody business, like mary left the door open on a arugment her Mr DU WAS HAVING (See, you, you just You just wanna Really, really, really push All my buttons'Cause you Mr. Right And I'm Misses Wrong But right now today I feel like I'm-I'm the one Gon' sing this song) Fade Away,.. This song is bascly the Guilty TRIP we put on ourslef when we feel like we done something wrong you really feel lost & Helpless to the people around you (NEYO) capture the way mary was feeling and turn it into a highlight of the album Mary took the song and brought it on home .What love is >Cant help but wait Anybody... Iam so glad that was'nt 2nd single Flop in Progess I just Hate That Song..... TALK 2 ME > I found my Everthing .Anyone If You Love Me . why is that mark as a ? When She Goes on tell him what to do more like a statement or maybe I got of the short yellow bus; nice lil album filler.NOW BACK TO WHY THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM ... SMOKE + Mary = Grammy Nom , This song need to be a single like quick the Drum Pattern the tricky word Play the 70's Pop THE VOCAL PROFORMANCE GREAT GREAT GREAT ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Here Come The Big Pay Of.. Tricky & The Dream Owned Mrs Issace Big time for the lil **** they pulled With That Umberella eh..Come To Me (Peace) The Needed Mary to Forgive Them THEY TOLD Mary COME TO US SO WE CAN MAKE EVERTHING RIGHT Peace Came wit ease from the start the song just had #1 single on it the bridge just sealed that and the lyric just pull on you heart strings ,,feel like a song that Mary Took from Maroon 5 OR Coldplay Songbook this song should have been the second single & still Not to late Get it out i would drop "Work That" Like a bad habit cause this song is what legend are made of....... Mary Said In A RADIO INTERVIEW IN B-MORE THIS WEEK THAT AFTER LOVE & LIFE SHE GOT A CALL From ELTON JOHN SAYING "MARY WHAT IS THIS 2 SONGS FOOLISHNESS YOU TO GOOD FOR THAT GET IT TOGETHER " I AM SURE UNCLE ELTON IS PROUD Of MARY NOW ...

I thought "Just Fine" was a decent single, but I am a fan of "Work That". It's just such a groovy tune. I was listening to it on the radio (it sounds great on the radio btw), and I came home and had to download it. I've gone through about half of Mary's album, and I'm not overly impressed, but it's only half and it's only one listen so far. Mary's music usually has to grow on me though. The album is getting relatively positive reviews.

A ballad should be released next and "Hurt Again" would be the obvious choice; however, "Come To Me (Peace)" wouldn't be a bad choice either, and I actually wouldn't be surprised if this was the next single.
3rd - "Come To Me (Peace)" 4th - "Grown Woman" 5th - "Smoke" 6th - "Hurt Again" If they make it to seven...
7th - "Fade Away"
"Shake Down" should never see the light of day as a single.
I like the message she's trying to get across here but this particular song doesn't work for me. The beat seems recycled and her vocals just don't convince me. And on top of that, the writing is very subpar, especially when tackling a subject like "world peace", per se. Her conveyance is admirable, but quite frankly, she executed it much better with "Come To Me (Peace)", which is a standout tune on Growing Pains.

Do you guys think Growing Pains will be submitted in R&B Album or Contemporary R&B Album next year?
Personally, I think it'll be submitted in Contemporary R&B Album.
Im thinking cont. r&b this time around...plus her camp might want to avoid alicia in r&b album. (maybe alicia's camp will pull a john legend and place her in pop...lol, oh wishful thinking)

right now "shake down" is the non released album track getting the most airplay, dont know if they will go with it as a single though. i didnt like the song at 1st but it has grown on me alot. it'll probably do pretty well as a single if they decide to release it.

I agree, elyja. I think "Shake Down" would do very well single wise. 2 of the hottest artist in the music industry on a duet is fire waiting to ignite.

I agree. I think that "Shake Down" would make for a wonderful single. There's no way in the world that I could see it flopping. It's not one of my personal favorites from the album, but I think it would make for a good single.
As for where the album should be submitted, I personally think that it SHOULD be placed in Best Contemporary R&B Album. They won't dare place her in R&B Album because she'd have to go toe-to-toe with Alicia Keys, and she'd ultimately lose there.
Growing Pains is truly a contemporary R&B album, and that's where it needs to be placed. The only other high profile contemporary R&B CD released thus far is Chris Brown's Exclusive, and Mary could easily win the Grammy over him.

Its not that I don't like it. It seems like skip over track to me.

I got ya. Just nothing really that great about it. I don't know. For some reason, it's extremely catchy to me.
