Well this statement would definitely follow the trend she has set-forth with her releases thus far...Success, Flop, Success, Flop, etc.
What do you mean?
Exactly. The only studio album Mary has released that didnt do to well was Love & Life and that still went platinum.
WHATS THE 411- 3 Million MY LIFE- 3 Million SHARE MY WORLD- 4 Million MARY- 2 Million NO MORE DRAMA- 3 Million LOVE & LIFE- 1 Million THE BREAKTHROUGH- 3 Million
- If one thing Mary has been consistent.
The sales are somewhat consistent, but as you can see, I am not completely off track with my statement. Since My Life, Mary's sales have gone up and down with each album she has released. Her buzz and material have often fluctuated as well throughout the years.

This comment is off track. Mary has never had an album flop. And what difference does it make if one album sells three million and the next one sells two million? That's not as big of a fluctuation as you're making it out to be. Mary has been in the game for 16 years and her album sales have always been in the two - four million range, with Love & Life being the sole exception. It'd be different if one album sold 4 million and the next one sold 200,000, then 3 million, then 100,000. And whether or not her material has fluctuated throughout the years is subjective, though I disagree.

Whether you feel it is subjective or not, I think that many would agree that her material is not always strong or consistent and as I said, it does tend to be somewhat of a roller coaster ride when it comes to her releases. I love Mary as the person she seems to be and I admire her voice, but her sales figures are weak, especially when pitted against the BIG GIRLS!

Mary has only had one true flop during her entire career, and that was 2003's Love & Life. Aside from the fact that it didn't sell as well as its predecessors, the material was lackluster and it is by far the only Mary album in my collection that I just don't go back to listening to. Is it a terrible album? No, but it isn't a very strong one either, or one that's worthy of repeated listens. It's also her worst-reviewed album, and with good reason. It just wasn't a very good album.
Mary's sales have been very consistent over the years. She's one of the few artists that really doesn't have to worry about selling records. Whether she has a big hit out or not, she'll still sell at least 3 million copies. A big hit for Mary increases sales, but she can still sell without having one. For instance, The Breakthrough provided Mary with the longest-running hit of her entire career, and the album benefited by selling upwards of 5 million copies (I may be a bit off).
But no, to say that Mary's sales fluctuate a lot is quite inaccurate. I think what matters for Mary is that, in the long run, she is a respected artist. No, she doesn't have the numbers of Mariah Carey, Faith Hill or Shania Twain, but she has just as much respect from her peers and fans as they do. Mary is one of the most respected artists in the industry, and you don't need sales to have respect, but she has both. I don't know where her sales have ever been bad or low, but if they have been, I'd like to see proof of that.

Who are the "big girls"? Just because she isn't a diamond seller, doesn't necessarily mean her figures are weak. All of her albums have either gone platinum or multi-platinum...and I think that says a lot, considering she has never been a mainstream artist until now. And again, whether or not her material has fluctuated is strictly based on personal preference. Personally, I don't think Mary has ever released a bad album. Sure, some were better than others, but that's something that every artist goes through, not just Mary.
Mary is my favorite album from her. Vocally, I don't think I've ever heard her sound as soulful as she did here. Aside from the lead single (which I hated), the songs were pretty much top-notch and some of the best I've ever heard from her. "Beautiful Ones" alone makes the entire album A+.

I agree with "MARY". "MARY" is still my favorite album for MJB. Every single song on that album I can still listen to till this day. Such an enjoyable album from beginning to end. My fav tracks are "Beautiful Ones" "No Happy Holidays" & "The Love I Never Had". While most people pick "MY LIFE" (which is number 2 for me) I feel "MARY" was a risk that payed off musically. that was the album that finally got Mary the "Critical Acclaim" she always deserved.
FAV ALBUMS (until Growing Pains) 1. MARY 2. MY LIFE 3. THE BREAKTHROUGH 4. WHAT'S THE 411? 5. SHARE MY WORLD 6. LOVE & LIFE 7. NO MORE DRAMA

I thought my question would put some more life into this thread.
From the way it sounds, "Work That" is going to be another "Just Fine", feel good type song. Hopefully, this time, the beat is sicker and she actually sings, instead of trying to show off her enunciation by talking her way through the song (i.e, "Just Fine").
My favorite MJB album is a tie with Mary and My Life. I think the Mary album is very underrated. My favorite song on there "The Love I Never Had" is just worth buying the cd. LOL

My Life is a masterpiece and by far her strongest, most consistent effort.
Why is Share My World her best-selling album? I don't get it. She didn't have any big hits off of that ("Not Gon Cry" peaked months before the release of the CD) and it just isn't a very good album.

I agree about My Life. I don't know how I put my rankings like that. I think I was reading one of the other posts when I did it. When we talk about Mary's albums around here, I've always contended that My Life was her strongest album.
In order:
1: My Life 2: What's The 411? 3: The Breakthrough 4: Mary 5: No More Drama 6: Share My World 7: Love & Life

Mary was one of the few artists in the 90's who didn’t need big hits to sell. Mary always had the R&B buyers on lock In the 90's....so her singles only needed to be hits on R&B Radio and she went platinum. All of her singles from that album (Love Is All We Need, I Can Love You, Everything, Seven Days) were top 10 R&B Radio hits, plus the album tracks (Its On, Share My World, Missing You)received massive R&B Air play.
Now days its different, even though Mary still has her loyal fanbase... I don’t think she could sell like she did in the 90's without crossing over. Mary was one of the lucky few who didnt need cross over success to go multi platinum in the 90's.
