I have always loved this category. It's the one chance to get to know some of the most innovative, groundbreaking music videos of the year. Plus, the winners have more often than not been very deserving. As much as it pains me to do so, though, I'm going to have to predict this category without having watched all 8 nominees: Gnarls Barkley will win.
First off, their video fits in the mold of a Breakthrough Video winner very, very well: Innovative concept, experimental use of technical aspects like special effects, interesting story that sometimes maybe even overshadows the actual song. Plus, since it's fan-voted, I'm assuming most people will vote for Gnarls Barkley because they are the most recognizable name there, and they might think their votes won't count if they don't vote for all categories. Either way, I wouldn't mind it. The video is really good, and it would be a nice way of rewarding Gnarls Barkley for all of those years where their videos could've taken a Breakthrough Video moonman had MTV not gotten rid of the category... (c'mon, don't tell me that "Crazy," "Smiley Faces," and "Run" couldn't all have come away with at least a Breakthrough Video nod if not the actual award).
SHOULD & WILL WIN: Gnarls Barkley, "Who's Gonna Save My Soul"
P.S.: Is there anyone else here who thinks that Coldplay's "Life in Technicolor II" should've been nominated for this award, too??

Umm..Yes? That video was genius.
For Your Grammy Consideration: Not Whitney Houston
The purpose of this category is award the really inovative, creative vieos of the year. Diffrent than most categories, it is not so influenced on popularity or status within' the music business. The point here is to award the video itself as a stand alone creation, and how it pushes boundaries of the music video language.
Love this category. And Gnarls Barkley should win this year.

Typically, yes, the director and the artist received the award for Breakthrough Video, but the last year they handed it out (2005) they made no mention of directors in the nomination package (whereas the other few times I saw this category on the main show they did). Who know how they'll do it this year?

It's odd that this category has ten nominees. I've only seen one of these videos (the Gnarls Barkley one, which was great and Grammy-nominated for Best Short-Form Video). Gnarls Barkley will probably win this for being the most recognizable nominee from the group, but this catetory has made me curious about the other nine videos to see if they're worthy or not.
Congratulations, Primetime Emmy Winners!

Ok, just watched the Passion Pit video, and gotta say, I regret voting from Gnarls Barkley. Sure, "Who's Gonna Save Your Soul?" is awesome, but Passion Pit has one of the coolest, most original, groundbreaking and beautiful videos of the last few years. Amazing.
Gnarls Barkley or Yeah Yeah Yeahs are going to win, but this should go to Passion Pit, no doubt about it.

Okay, that seems to make more sense if it's for directors.

Great that they brought back this category! I've actually seen all the music videos, so..... My Personal Rankings: 1. Bat for Lashes — "Daniel" 2. Gnarls Barkley — "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" 3. Anjulie — "Boom" 4. Passion Pit — "The Reeling" 5. Death Cab for Cutie — "Grapevine Fires" 6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs — "Heads Will Roll" 7. Matt and Kim — "Lessons Learned" 8. Chairlift — "Evident Utensil" 9. Cold War Kids — "I've Seen Enough" 10.Major Lazer — "Hold the Line"
Predictions: (Top 6) 1. Gnarls Barkley — "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" 2. Bat for Lashes — "Daniel" 3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs — "Heads Will Roll" 4. Death Cab for Cutie — "Grapevine Fires" 5. Anjulie — "Boom" 6. Passion Pit — "The Reeling"
I think the 6 videos in the running, as my predictions have the best shot at winning! I wouldn't mind if Gnarls, Bats, or Anhulie wins. I think those three are my favorites. Though the video for Passion Pit is REALLY cool. What a great video. But I'm rooting for the other three.
I decided to go through all of these videos to see what they were like.
Anjulie, "Boom": I like her sound. It's kind of a more melodic version of M.I.A., and her look is like an exotic Amy Winehouse.
Bat for Lashes, "Daniel": The lead singer's voice is exquisite. The video's really bizarre though.
Chairlift, "Evident Utensil": The paintlike animation that they used here was incredible. I've never seen anything like that in a music video before. The song was lesser though.
Cold War Kids, "I've Seen Enough": Hmmm. I would have probably left this off of the list. It feels like a lot of performance-driven, backstage type videos I've seen before.
Death Cab for Cutie, "Grapevine Fires": I love the animation to this. The song's excellent too. Damn MTV. I wish I knew about this video before now.
Gnarls Barkley, "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?": Gross concept, but really cool special effects and an incredible song. I see this video winning out of the lineup.
Major Lazer, "Hold the Line": The animation here was edgy and distinctive. That breaks the video from the rest of the pack somewhat for doing what the others can't, but it's not enough for the win I think.
Matt & Kim, "Lessons Learned": That took balls for them to pull off. Wow. Thrilling video to watch unfold.
Passion Pit, "The Reeling": I hope that this video is Grammy-nominated for Short-Form Music Video this year. It might be the only one from this lineup (besides Gnarls Barkley and maybe Matt & Kim) that I'd like to see recognized for that. Really stunning and unique concept that was executed wonderfully.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Heads Will Roll": The wolfman dancer was awesome, and I couldn't take my eyes off of the lead singer. Great ending.
Congratulations, Primetime Emmy Winners!

It just means notable or avant-garde videos, not necessarily first videos.
