Okay so i recently heard a song on a PSA for "Rock The Vote" and after a bit of research found out the name of the band is "Against Me" and the song is called "stop"... i really like the song and the video---it's very catchy and has a nice beat to it... and i want to listen to more of their music, so i'm wondering if you can tell me ANYTHING about this band... are they considered a hard core band are they poltically conservative or liberal (or basically non-political)... what can you tell me about this band...
what kind of music do they make? clearly it's some form of rock---but are they considered a "frat band" like Blink-182 and those types of bands or are they more serious?
i don't generally like rock music but this song was very good--is this song in their typical style? what other songs should i be looking towards listening to that are similar to "stop"?
has anyone else heard of this band?

Actually, a lot of their new album (at least) is a lot like "Stop".
Boidiva, Agianst Me! (the name usually has an exlcamation point, which I love) is a "hardcore" band from Florida. They were on indie labels until last year when they put out "New Wave" with a major, and got some big selling out notions for it.
Their first single from last year was "Thrash Unreal", and that's where I got interested in them. Their album is freaking great and was Spin Magazine's number 1 album of last year. I know there was a cover story on them in that and I also think in Blender. They have one song in paricular, that I love. It's called "Borne on the FM Waves of the Heart" and it features backing vocals from Tegan Quinn from Tegan and Sara. I can honestly say its one of my favorite songs of all time, so pretty.
But, Boidivia, I really can't see you liking the album. It's very catchy and melodic, but the lead singer has a rougher voice than I see you enjoying. But, maybe you'll suprise me. They put on a great live show (I saw them at Bonnaroo), and the lead singer is hot as hell! Never a bad thing, is it?
I just so happened to be listening to Against Me! (my all time favorite band) when I happened to come across this thread, and so I figured, what better time to register and start posting.
Against Me! hail from Gainesville, Florida, and consist of Tom Gabel (guitar/vocals), James Bowman (guitar), Andrew Seward (bass), and Warren Oakes (drums).
The roots of AM! lie in the underground Anarcho-Folk movement, which combined anarchist activism with lively acoustic numbers and a punk rock spirit. In the tradition of Woody Guthrie, Billy Bragg, and Joe Strummer before him, Tom Gabel began as a one-man solo act, christening the project "Against Me!" Overtime, the message started to catch on, and it became pretty clear that they were too big for acoustic shows in squats and basements. Overtime, they've expanded their lineup to four members, and have moved from self-released casette tapes, to minor indie labels (Plan-It-X, No Idea), to larger indie labels (Fat Wreck), and finally, much to the chagrine of their DIY fanbase, a major label (Sire, their current home), though with Sire being the home to such bands as The Replacements, The Ramones, The Cure, and Madonna, it's easy to see why they'd want to sign with them.
Against Me! are a shining example of a band that has worked their asses off to get where they are today, never comprimising their personal values, even in the face of adversity, even from so-called "fans". Their refreshing mix of catchy songwriting and socially-conscious messages will allow them to go down as one of the most important bands of this century, no question.
I don't know much about their discography or lyrics, but as far as politics, nearly every punk band is liberal (as they should be.) Against Me did appear on one of the "Rock Against Bush" compilations, so there's a good way to figure out their politics.

Wow i've learned SO much from this thread... I'll be honest, i always assumed that most punk bands were very conservative/republican, which i guess shows how ignorant i am on the subject, it's not the type of music i typically listen too, usually i go towards more mainstream stuff like Pink, Mariah, Good Charlotte and Green Day with GD and GC being the most "punk" in my CD collection...
But i guess considering the history of punk music it makes sense that punk bands would be liberal since the whole point was to rebell against authority right?
I'm listening on Rhapdosy to "New Wave" right now and so far i am actually enjoying it... sure it's not my typical sound but that's okay, it's good to expand your horizions a bit. It'll never be among my top favorites of all time but it's a very good listen and something new...
i'm on "Thras Unreal" right now and it's a pretty good song----very catchy...
And bildo10, yes Tom Gabel is smoking hot... but i acutally think i like his music even more than him!
