Um, what? This song was not a single, and thus was not really enjoyed by anyone except those who bought the album. How is that supposed to have helped her move copies of "GGGB"?

I'm not shocked by that. Keyshia Cole is a way better artist and singer. Plus, Keyshia had a stong debut which solidified her status within the community.

It was a single. It just wasn't pushed. I heard it for a bit on radio, and I guess IDJ decided to go in a different direction.

Death Cab For Cutie claims its first No. 1 album as "Narrow Stairs" starts at the top slot on the Billboard 200. The Atlantic set moved 144,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Soundscan. Death Cab's prior album, 2005's "Plans," debuted at No. 4 with 90,000 and spent 50 weeks on the chart.

Reprise's retrospective Frank Sinatra collection "Nothing But the Best" bows at No. 2 with 99,000. It's been nearly 15 years since Old Blue Eyes was this high on the chart. In December 1993, his "Duets" album spent three weeks at No. 2. This new hits collection, which chronicles the legend's tenure on Reprise Records, also commemorates the tenth anniversary of Sinatra's passing on May 14, 1998.

Jason Mraz's Atlantic album "We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things" enters at No. 3 with 73,000, giving the Warner Music Group and WEA Distribution the top three on the chart for the first time in more than 16 years. "We Sing..." is the singer/songwriter's new high-water mark on the chart; "Mr. A-Z" topped out at No. 5 in 2005.

Welsh singer Duffy's A&M/Polydor debut "Rockferry" enters at No. 4 with 71,000. That makes her the third female British newcomer to earn a top 10 debut since the beginning of 2007, joining Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis. The album's single "Mercy" has risen to No. 20 thus far on the Adult Top 40 radio chart.

Speaking of Lewis, her Syco/J set "Spirit" climbs 6-5 with 62,000, an 18% slip in sales. Mariah Carey's Island Def Jam album "E=MC2" flip-flops with it, falling 5-6 with 59,000 (-33%). After becoming his first No. 1 last week, Neil Diamond's "Home Before Dark" (Columbia) slips to No. 7 with a 63% sales hit at 53,000.

Madonna's "Hard Candy" (Warner Bros.) continues its decline 3-8 with 53,000 (-43%) and Toby Keith's double-disc collection "35 Biggest Hits" (Show Dog Nashville) descends 2-9 with 41,000, a 60% sales tumble.

Keith Sweat's "Just Me" rounds out the top tier, debuting at No. 10 with 37,000. The Keia/Atco/Rhino is Sweat's first studio album since 2002's "Rebirth," which peaked at No. 14 in its opening week.

Rock act 10 Years' "Division" (Universal Republic) lands at No. 12 with 28,000. Its last set, "The Autumn Effect," topped out at No. 72 in 2005. Other debuts on The Billboard 200 this week include the Disney soundtrack to "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" at No. 26 with 16,000, Cherish's "The Truth" (Capitol) at No. 40 with 13,000, Filter's "Anthems for the Damned" (Pulse) at No. 42, also with 13,000 and Starbucks' Hear Music compilation "The Second Wave" at No. 43 with 13,000.

Album sales this week are down 8.5% from last week's sum with 7.43 million units and down 13.5% from the same week last year.

How?

She had another "single" and more airplay, thus more exposure but still didn't outsell her

Tone it down.). Her delivery on Umbrella is so sweet, so tender, yet also dark; the storm is coming, but she'll be there for you. It's very touching and human, so she gets points for that. Hate That I Love You also seems quite genuine, and despite Ne-Yo's cloying presence, it generally works. Don't Stop the Music is catchy, and anyone inspired by Michael Jackson gets my support. The only single she's released that I dislike other than Unfaithful--LMFAO--I could take back my whole "she's not insanely over-the-top!" statement because of this one song--is Shut Up & Drive, which is just stupid. I blame that on the lyrics and not Rihanna, though.

Cederick I think that is a very fair assessment of Rihanna's last few singles. I agree on everything, so it still leaves me wondering why her album sales are so low with 3 out of her 4 singles being great successes.

keyshia outsold her in AMERICA, but that is not the only place where music is bought. rihanna outsells any young black artists WORLDWIDE, which include chris brown, ciara, keyshia, ashanti, etc. rihanna may not be an album seller in america, but the girl sells still. keyshia had to stand back and watched rihanna won best rap/sung collaboration at grammy awards. rihanna is way more successful than keyshia cole period.

why is janet not selling now?

umbrella, shut up and drive, dont stop the music, hate that i love u. wat other single? take a bow is the only other one. btw, exposure of an artist still cannot force a consumer to buy an album. no matter how many times an artist is in my face i still wont budge to buy. why did beyonce rerelease her album? cause it wasnt bringin the numbers she expected, alicia keys outsold her but who is more popular and successful, beyonce still.

That's why I said EVEN Rehab, because it definitely was released as a single (even if it was seemingly only on the radio for a few weeks). Plus there was more potential for the single since it was written by Justin Timberlake (notice the similarity to 'What Goes Around...' and Cry me a River'??)

Keyshia's last album was pretty good, whereas Rihanna had two crapfests lol. I bought Keyshia's latest album before even previewing it because I enjoyed her last one. I only bought the Rihanna one because I previewed it and liked what I heard. If I didn't do that, I doubt I would have initially.

I think it's a matter of how much the consumer trusts an artist. For instance, people will rush out to buy a Kanye or Alicia album because it's a less risky buy. I mean, if people are gonna pay money for something they can have for free, they expect a little quality.

I'm like F4J on this one.

I bought Keyshia's album before I even thought about buying Rihanna's (mind you, Rihanna came out in July; Keyshia in September or October). Why? Because I'd purchased Rihanna's first 2 albums and they were less than impressive.

I would go in the store and just look at her CD sometimes and wonder "should I or shouldn't I buy this CD?" because I was underwhelmed the first 2 times. Why try a 3rd time so I could strike out? LOL! I was wrong though. I eventually bought the album and it's packed with stellar tracks.

It's hard to believe that Rihanna still hasn't hit double-platinum considering her success as a singles artist, but I believe competition like Keyshia and Alicia are outselling because of reputation. Keyshia's debut was a very strong piece of work and she had 2 huge R&B hits from it. They set her up for even more success with the second album.

Even Mary has outsold Rihanna with her latest album, and Geffen has totally screwed Mary over with promotion this go 'round. But because of Mary's reputation with consumers, she can easily outsell someone like Rihanna (whose first 2 albums were garbage) whose reputation was probably on shaky ground by the time "Umbrella" blew up. If most buyers were like me, they didn't buy GGGB because they'd either bought or heard the first 2 albums and thought that she wasn't any good besides a few hit singles and that her albums don't hold up.

Now, I'd tell any and everyone I know to buy Rihanna's latest CD, because this time around, it's actually GOOD. But am I surprised that Mary, Keyshia, and Alicia have surpassed her? No, because they're also running off of strong reputations. With the way Geffen has been treating Mary, all she has to sell her album IS her reputation. Alicia and Keyshia's labels are pushing them and they have their reputations backing them as well (ironically, Keyshia & Mary are on the SAME label).

Based on her current album sales, it's clear that Rihanna still hasn't resonated with buyers enough and they just aren't confident enough in her to go buy her CDs, and when you release two bad albums back-to-back, what do you expect? People will rush out to buy Mariah, Coldplay, Dixie Chicks, Kanye, Alicia, Mary. Why? Because they're reliable. You can pretty much depend on those artists to release good/great albums and there's no excuse as to why consumers shouldn't expect the same of Rihanna. Anyone else realize that Rihanna and Alicia have the same amount of studio albums? Now you tell me why Alicia never has a problem selling and why Rihanna does. It's because Alicia took her time early on in her career to actually produce some stellar albums. She still does and it pays off EVERY SINGLE time.

Don't get me wrong, Rihanna struck gold big time with this album because I think it's wonderful. But like I said, I don't blame anyone if they don't buy it, although I'd recommend it. Because of my initial (yet justified) skepticism, it took me months before I finally purchased the album.

There. I'm done rambling. LOL!

No offense to Rihanna or the people on here who like her, but I can't believe debates about this girl are dominating two threads on this board. I like the girl and some of her songs are catchy but there MUST be something better to talk about!

This is not meant to be rude, but you can always start a topic...otherwise you're stuck discussing what everyone else is.
