I'm always puzzled when I hear this sometimes because I'm pretty sure I didn't see whomever it is they're referring to having been awarded a grammy earlier. For example, they referred Natalie Cole as a "grammy winner already tonight" the other night but I didn't see her getting a grammy in the program earlier.

Is this because there are so many awards that they announce certain ones offstage prior to grammy night?

Hey there, it does mean that they presented categories at a different ceremony before the televised one. In recent years it's been streamed live online for anyone (basically us on Goldderby) that wants to watch it. They gave out about 100 categories at that ceremony vs. the 10 they gave out during the main one.
